But you're the first to make me feel it

It's only joy I ache
Woka Woka Woka

They got the keys to the city but we got a lot of shakin' in our hips
Oh you know me I love the universe

so I guess this means they're... COLLABORATING? I guess that's a good sign, and I too think it sounds a little like Frank Black and the Breeders featureing Joey S on guitar. Which is great! Its poppy and catchy and not-too-much of this or that, and all-in-all I think an awesome first-salvo into new Pixies territory.

So Kim wrote the lyrics here? Joey donated some old recording? Frank says, "sure, I'll sing back up"? I love it either way.

I read in an old interview that Frank Black would like
to do a pixies single every month and than every year a best of kinda thing.

I think that Itunes would be great to do that
every month a new one
people buy it and love it
and than in december all that (plus 2 of so more)
on Spinart/Cooking Vinyl

maybe it would work

and tommorow iTunes goes european so we don't have
a reason to download it illegal

Pixies - Here comes a new song Pic:P.Wallis
Pixies Extras

PIXIES RELEASE BRAND NEW SONG

PIXIES have written and recorded their first new song for thirteen years, and will release it tonight through the Internet.

'Bam Thwok' will go on-sale for 99 cents at midnight (June 15) exclusively on Apple's iTunes Music Store.

Written by bassist Kim Deal, the track was produced and recorded by the band at Stagg Street Studios, Los Angeles, in March.

Clocking in at 2 minutes 35 seconds, the lyrics for 'Bam Thwok' came from an art book Deal found on a city street while on tour a few years ago.

She said: "From the handwriting, you could tell that this book must have belonged to a little kid. This kid had written a short story, a paragraph really, about a party that took place in another universe, about people and monsters that were partying together. That's what provided the inspiration for the lyrics."

The chorus features the lyrics: 'Love. Bang. Crash. Wakka, Wakka, Bam Thwok'.

Deal added: "It's a song about loving everyone... showing goodwill to everyone."

A carousel-esque organ solo also features in the track, which was performed and recorded by guitarist Joey Santiago's father-in-law many years ago, when he was doing missionary work in the Philippines.

'Bam Thwok' was arranged and rehearsed at Santiago's home studio.

Singer Frank Black said: "Recording it was a nice way for us to break the ice after twelve years. The recording process was very relaxed and it didn't feel like twelve years had passed."

Pixies are currently touring Europe, and return to the UK for the T In The Park festival on July 11 and the V Festival over the weekend of August 21/22.

The band recently played a rapturously-received four-night sold-out stint at London Brixton Academy (June 2-5).

June 15th? Meaning its going to be offically announced on iTunes then on the main page or something? It's cool they produced and recorded it and joeys father in laws organ thing which is growing on me. Now what else was recorded there and/or how long were they in the studio in March? Maybe this is the "secret song" they mentioned at Coachella and this is all the new material they have so far. Arghhhh.... :)

Here's the official press release: there's not much new, but i thought you might be interested.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MONDAY, June 14, 2004

PIXIES WRITE AND RECORD FIRST NEW SONG IN THIRTEEN YEARS
"Bam Thwok" Will Make Its Debut via Apple's iTunes

OK, all of you Pixies fans, the moment you've been waiting for has arrived -
the PIXIES have written and recorded a brand new song, the band's first in
thirteen years, and you can get it starting at Midnight, Tuesday, June 15
exclusively on Apple's popular iTunes Music Store. "Bam Thwok" was penned
by Kim Deal and produced and recorded by the Pixies at Stagg Street Studios
in Los Angeles this past March. The 2:35 "Bam Thwok," with Deal singing
lead, can be downloaded from the iTunes Music Store for 99-cents
(http://www.apple.com/itunes/).

The music for "Bam Thwok" had its genesis in a chord progression that Deal
had been toying with for a while, and the lyrics from an art book she found
discarded on a city street a number of years ago while on tour. "From the
handwriting, you could tell that this book must have belonged to a little
kid," Deal recounts. "This kid had written a short story, a paragraph
really, about a party that took place in another universe, about people and
monsters that were partying together. That's what provided the inspiration
for the lyrics." The song is a musical romp, and features a driving beat,
searing guitar, and the whimsical chorus, "Love. Bang. Crash. Wakka, wakka,
Bam Thwok." "It's a song about loving everyone," Deal added, "showing good
will to everyone."

The Pixies - Deal (bass, vocals,) Frank Black (vocals, guitar), Joey
Santiago (guitar), David Lovering (drums) - arranged and rehearsed the song
at Santiago's home studio, which includes a 15-second carousel-esque organ
solo performed and recorded many years ago by Santiago's father-in-law while
he was doing missionary work in the Philippines. "That's a great piece of
music," added Deal, "and it fits perfectly."

"'Bam Thwok' is a really good song," said Frank Black. "Recording it was a
nice way for us to break the ice after twelve years. The recording process
was very relaxed and it didn't feel like twelve years had passed."

As the Pixies are not currently affiliated with a record label, they had the
luxury of making their first new song available to fans around the globe at
a low price and instantaneously, something that iTunes could easily provide.
The Pixies plan to perform "Bam Thwok" at concerts on their current European
and upcoming North American tour dates.

"It's a far cry from small boys in the park, jumpers for goalposts. Isn't it? Mmmmm. Marvellous."

so does this make Bam Thwok the first "official" Pixies song not "penned" by FB aka BF? I mean, even Silver is only co-credited to MRS. JM, not fully credited. Explains a lot of the Breeders comments, not just because KD is singing.... anyway I love it.

I think it's great... mostly just that it's not what any of us expected... or at least seems that way from people's comments/reactions.

I will say that I didn't know everything I was downloading from iTunes was at 128, which on one hand upsets me, but on the other, makes me think that the user (sorry, forgot) who posted that the AAC format sounds better than a 128 mp3 must be right.

I think there should be a choice. I really like iTunes as a method for hearing/purchasing/organizing music, but a choice on encoding rates would be nice... a topic for another forum perhaps.

Still, I like the fact that the song sounds new, but doesn't betray what they'd done before. Perhaps they who posted that they thought not much thought went into producing/creating this, I don't know, could be right, but I like the spontanaity of it, the freshness of it, the positivity of it. It is in many ways better than I might have hoped... not that it's the best song in the world or not.... just that it didn't do anything but make me say hey, a new song to hear from people who's music I enjoy.... and hey, it's not bad! Excelsior!

That's just my initial reaction, I'm sure I'll join in the critique with more focus after the excitement wears off....

i think this song would fit perfectly as a b-side on the Planet Of Sound single. the production and general sound sounds very much like those songs (the b-sides) to me.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm doing. You obviously don't want more than one opinion on this board. I just expected a song about something. Not a giant space party with monsters. Sorry.

According to someone posting to a "Bam Thwok" thread elsewhere (http://www.ilxor.com/thread.php?msgid=4736212), "Bam Thwok" was originally intended for the Shrek 2 soundtrack, but rejected.

Naturally, use your grain of salt wisely when reacting to that news.

Wow. I don't think you deserve you're signature-tag after that one, buddy.

Well, iTunes put it on their site on Wednesday, the 9th. I'm sure other people had heard it, but my little brother Sam, a Mac Addict, likes to look through iTunes all the time. He found the song on there and immediately nabbed me from work. I went and downloaded it, then posted here as quickly as possible. I'm sure somebody heard it before me though. But whoever did, they weren't part of this forum, as this was the first place I went to after hearing the song. Hell, it'd been live for three days. Tricksy Pixieses. But to answer the original question, I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't know about it until Apple announced it tomorrow if my brother hadn't brought it to my attention.

I've got a good grip on all the lyrics to the tune thanks to dilligent ears on this forum. Now, talk to me about the line right before the chorus (at about 18 seconds in and then later as well). I can hear multiple possibilities and want to know what others hear.

A) "Oh it's only joy hiding"
B) "Oh it's only joy I ache"
C) "Oh if only joy had eeeeee-nough"
D) "Oh if only joy had a"
E) ???

Then into the chorus: "Love, Bang, Crash a-wocka wocka, Bam Thwok."

I am really leaning towards option "D" myself, and have not seen this option in others' interpretive lyrics posts.

Yes, that's right, I may have solved the eternal question on all of our minds 24/7: "What's the pre-chorus line in Bam Thwok?" Yes yes. You're welcome, you're welcome. No, no, no gifts, please.

That's so cool, secretly posting the new song. No promo, no hype, just put it out there for the fans. If you like it, good, if not, you always have the old albums. They're keeping the mystic of the band going. I reckon they'll finish the tour, deliver an album, and dissapear again, reputation intact.

i doubt it was intended for SHREK 2, but not because of any timeline thing, but more because it doesn't really sound like it would be written for SHREK 2. the film was only released a month ago. it's feasible, in theory, that the Pixies were asked to write something for it.
