Now the novelty has worn off.
I can't really make out any Charles guitar, the drums are so lifeless they could be played by a machine, and you don't have the beauty of the instruments broken down so you can hear them individually.
I don't think a great amount of thought went into this track, which rather sets it apart from other Pixies songs where you realise how well crafted they are.
Sure, I'd choose this over a great deal of chart or even 'indie' music. Argh, the song's only been out for days and I'm taking it to pieces.

I agree but thats more of a mix issue than a overall volume issue. I think we'll be happier once we have a non mp3 of this especially 128, the random clicks/mp3 oddities really bother me. It could have a lot to do with the encoding, either way the actual recording sounds less muddy to me compared to Surfer/Doolittle stuff. |

I bought this song off ITunes and have been listening to it for a few days now. After quite a few spins, it sounds like a high-quality b-side to me. I doubt the Pixies would release a big, single-caliber track on ITunes exclusively.
Without Santiago's signature guitar, I doubt I'd recognize this as a quintessentially "Pixies" tune, though I would recognize the singers and guitar players. I think it's oddly fitting that the first "new" Pixies track in more than a decade would feature Kim on lead vocals; making up, so to speak, for her relative absence on the later records? A gesture of consolation?
It's cool and quirky and fun---just a little lop-sided pop-song; low -key, jst like its sudden appearance. Nothing less and nothing more. Still, more stuff would be great. Why not? Now that THAT's over with... |

A warning again that posting links, or means of acquiring commercially available content is not tolerated here.
... even if I do sympathize with others that can't download from bloody iTunes.
Please don't post links to the MP3.

I'm not really reading into this much. The 'one new song' Charles mentioned at Coachella?
Maybe testing the waters? |

jimmybobbin, I love you, thank you so much.
This tune is awesome...goofy fun rock. It doesn't sound like the older Pixies stuff and I don't want it to. Woot!

The Frank Black EP released on iTunes was called "Exclusive EP".. but the 4 tracks will be on the b-side thing coming out later.. so have no fears, I'm sure this will end up on a CD.

We do have a non-mp3 of this.... the one you buy from the iTunes Music Store at least is an AAC file. Does the re-encoded mp3 version that people have made sound worse?
Either way, the AAC file I bought at least sounds fine to me... I don't notice any random clicks or "mp3 oddities".

That this new song has Kim on lead vocals does make sense. Wasn't the Pixies' first single "Gigantic"? It's kinda full circle this way. Releasing a single, which this essentially is, sung by someone other than a band's main lead singer is a fun, quirky thing that bands don't do enough, but that fits in well with the Pixies' sensibility. The Clash did it a few times, too.
Anyway I wouldn't dissect this song too much. Just gobble it up like a twinkie. That's what it's meant for. And even good-sounding MP3s don't sound good enough so I'd reserve sound quality/production judgements for now. |

That song is fun. Sounds like Kim is singin' frank's words. I like the simple guitar part that I assume is frank's. Down with strumming! I'll definetly buy it when it's put onto a cd, but in the meantime thanks fer the mp3. |

I agree with the sentiments of mixed excitement/worry that it wouldn't be what you'd expect.
After several listens, it's a far cry from what I'd have expected. But I'm actually glad. It's been a long time, and they've all grown and been through a lot since the last go-round. It would have been very disappointing if it was recycled Pixies we already knew.
I like the song a lot. But personally, I don't think it sounds like the Pixies--at least not as I last knew them. It reminds me of a poppier Breeders tune, but it reminds me of X even more. That's what I thought of from the very first listen, right down to the Kim/FB (Exene/JD?) vocals. At least X with Joey leads going on.
Poppy is OK with me. Hell, if TLM wasn't poppy, then what was it? And I agree with Ziggy in wondering who produced it.
Damn, I just hope this means there's more to come! |

Alright, I went through way too much effort(getting a friend's cc) to sign up for iTunes to get this one song and I'm glad I did, the converted mp3's do sound terrible. I still wish iTunes wouldn't encode their stuff at 128 though, a actual cd single would have been better but oh well it sounds good enough I guess. The mp3's have numerous clicks and sound cutouts at various points. |

The version I got from iTunes and converted to mp3 doesn't have one click or sound cutout. When I pull up the info of the song it says it is encoded at 128kbps. It is a great song. Kind of B52s and the amps sound. Nice up beat tune that you can really get into.

One small point: it is encoded at 128 bits, but it's an AAC file, not an mp3. AAC uses a completely different encoding scheme than mp3, and in my opinion, sounds equivalent to a 160-bit mp3 when encoded at 128.
Some people have complained about a slight distortion at the high end with AAC that I haven't been able to hear. I just know for me, everything I've bought off the iTunes store sounds better at 128kbps than any other 128-bit mp3s I've heard.

It is poppy, sounds like she's saying wocka wocka wocka like that muppets character. This song could probably go on a muppets episode.
That said, I do like it, it's a fun poppy lil track.
I bet Frank is gonna come here to this thread due to curiosity of response to the new track.
Good stuff. |

This song is good stuff. It is a perfect pick up to an album before they left off. It is not a rip of any of their old stuff, has a fresh sound, and makes a little ball bounce around in my head.

Indeed, I'm so happy that they just didn't do a cliche pixies song we are more then ten years away from the last pixies songs and I'm glad they are doing something new I also doubt this will be the new pixies single, I doubt there will be a single at all. Maybe this gives us a tastes for a new album, maybe the new album will be totally different.
And that's what a bloody like, we don't know what to expect!

Couple days later now and it's still the first thing I wanted to hear this morning. I'm liking the organ thing in the middle more and more. you know, the song brings to mind a comment I heard Frank make years and years ago, just before Bossa Nova was recorded and he was out doing those solo shows across the country. He said on a radio interview in Arizona then that he wanted to record a great summer "hit"--a song for "riding with the top down" and making the "whole world fall in love with the Pixies." Bam Thwok seems like a product of those same aspirations. It's a good thing. |

Is this song a new song, or just an unreleased one from the previous albums? Sorry, if this is a stupid question, but i am one of those 'who have come in late'.

Apparently, it's new. Though I haven't had the chance to listen to it all yet because I'm in the UK.

I found it using "Bittorrent". It's currently one of the most popular torrents too!
Having spent most of today thinking 'go on... just once more.', I can tell why. It's a great pop song.

I noticed googling for it that the hit count has crept from about three hits to a couple of pages of hits, since last night.
Have any of the larger alt-music-news sites caught up yet?
Pitchfork or nme? I fucking well hate them both, but they are normally first out of the toilet, so to speak.

Here's an interesting article just put up on Billboard.com about Bam Thwok, seems to describe where the organ part came from!
Pixies Pen First New Song In 13 Years
The Pixies reunion has now yielded more than just sold-out concerts. The iconic rock act has penned its first new song in 13 years, "Bam Thwok," which will be available tomorrow (June 15) at midnight for digital download exclusively via Apple's iTunes Music Store. The cut features bassist Kim Deal on lead vocals plus a 15-second organ solo recorded years ago by guitarist Joey Santiago's father-in-law while he was doing missionary work in the Philippines.
Deal says her lyrics were inspired by an art book she found on the street. "This kid had written a short story, a paragraph really, about a party that took place in another universe, about people and monsters that were partying together," she says. "It's a song about loving everyone [about] showing good will to everyone."
Adds vocalist/guitarist Frank Black, "The recording process was very relaxed and it didn't feel like 12 years had passed." The cut is the first new Pixies original song to emerge since the Oct. 1991 release of the group's last studio album, "Trompe Le Monde."
The Pixies are in the midst of a European tour that hits Paris tonight (June 14) and wraps July 11 at the T in the Park Festival in Scotland. A U.S. tour, including a pair of Lollapalooza appearances, begins July 22 in Ventura, Calif.
