Good catch!

Not keeping Kim S on, seems counter-intuitive. From what people on here have said, reviews and youtube clips, she seemed to be doing as good a job as anyone at the impossible job of filling Kim Deal's spot. Usually musical chemistry will just increase the longer they play together, so the switch seems strange. As someone suggested, it could be possible this is all some kind of long term audition process, but I don't think so. Maybe as someone else said, the plan is to have a constantly revolving bass position for now. But that just seems needlessly complicated.

I guess we won't know for sure if the parties keep quiet. But I was surprised when I came on here and saw that Kim S was no longer taking part in the tour.

Just want to add that I was among the voices (albeit only a few) that did not think her vocals blended well with Frank from the beginning. From what I heard, she sounded pitch-y, her vocal range seemed naturally lower than Kim's and Frank (for the first time that I've ever heard), sounded pretty out of key--I can only assume that Kim S's out-of-pitch vocals were throwing him off. By the time they debuted in NYC--at least at the Brooklyn show that I attended--her vocals were mixed way down.

That being said, her bass playing was great. The songs sounded super energetic. Possibly the most energetic I'd ever seen them and I caught them 4 times on their first reunion tour.

The replacement doesn't have to sound *exactly* like Kim D (since that's impossible save maybe Kelley), but she should at least have the same vocal range. The back catalog is written and is so extensive; it needs someone with the same vocal range--not necessarily the same voice--as Kim D.

Just my opinion.

The ideal solution. The whole issue gets diffused and makes Kim Deal's return smooth should she want that. In the meantime us meatheads get to talk about girls.

A revolving bass position... I understand your point, but I disagree about its positive effects, especially if its main purpose is to diffuse fans' talk about Kim Deal's status within the band. Sure, it might achieve that, but in my personal experience it's not good for the internal consistency and musical chemistry in a band if each tour features a different bass player. We can assume that from now on, any bass player in the Pixies will no longer have any kind of creative input, which I would not say it's necessarily bad given the new songs, but after a while of rotating bass players it will start feeling like a worn-out novelty thing just to attract media headlines. I think member consistency is important within a band, and I think this whole episode was handled very badly if indeed it's just another bass player coming down the lane. The main news I want to hear from the band is the release of more music, such as EP2, not the replacement of a perfectly able "replacement" (pardon the pun). Everything else just feels gimmicky after a while.

I agree that to a certain point singing on pitch is important, but in my mind it's only a very relative importance. There are too many people these days hanging on to their cellphones recording instead of feeling the creative energy of the moment. It's easy to be upset about pitch quality when we are watching a low-quality Youtube video, but when we are enjoying the energy of the live show (ultimately, that's why we pay the damn ticket prices, right?), the energy and total commitment of the artist to that moment is more important than good pitch. And I would say that FB's and Kim S's voices were perfectly reasonable, considering how most artists these days have autotune devices in their live rigs. From what I've seen, Joey made more mistakes in his guitar playing than Kim S on her bass, but still the energy and commitment were there on all parties.

I've seen another thread saying that Paz is the next bass player (which I don't know if it is true or not). I know that my opinion is going to sound too cruel, and it might be unfair for me to judge a fellow musician whom I don't know personally, but while she might have the technical skills, I cannot help but be put back by things that I consider "gimmicky" such as excessive bare skin and a somewhat detached and frosty attitude while on stage. It always irks me when the first thing people mention about an artist is "OMG he's hooooot! oh, and he also happens to sing well". You might say, one can wear whatever they want, but then they will have to hear things they don't want to hear. An artist can choose to present themselves by placing the focus on their music abilities or on their looks. I felt Kim S achieved a good balance. I'm not so sure about Paz, but I truly hope I am wrong and if she is the chosen one, I hope she will have a good time.

so, you're critiquing her because people have said she's attractive? i think you're reaching a bit there. also, it's not like she dresses super provocatively either (unless you live in Afghanistan). she's not pulling Lady Gaga outfits or twerking in her underwear

sex appeal has been a part of rock since day one. no matter who you put on a stage (female or male) people are going to respond if they happen to find them attractive

if Paz Leprechaun happens to be good looking i don't think we should fault her for that

Not necessarily because people think she's attractive, but rather that her performing style is markedly different from what I'm used to seeing in the Pixies. Like I said, I fully admit my opinion might turn out to be completely wrong, and I hope so. But from what I have seen of her bands, it's more of a "in my own headspace", slightly theatrical, slightly moody thing. Her and her fellow band members often dressed in terms of the musical content they were presenting (more psychedelic in the case of the entrance band, a bit darker, cooler in the case of a perfect circle), they usually resorted to audiovisual material in order to enhancen the mood of the music, and the music often revolved around the band members building up from each other, piling up sounds, riffs and notes collaboratively. While I certainly think both bands are good, (as in, I would pay for a concert ticket to enjoy the physicality of the music, but the songs themselves are not meaningful enough to me to warrant buying their music or even downloading it illegally) the overall idea I get from them is more of a "serious", slightly self-absorbed tone. This suits their music quite well, but in my humble opinion the Pixies are a band of "normal" people who don't really dress to enhance#12288;anything, and who make quite "whimsical" music full of highs and lows, lots of contrasts, dynamic range with quite edgy, vivid lyrics. In my view, the "seriousness" I've seen so far from her bands and the "whimsicalness" I see in the Pixies are not that compatible.

My main point is: well, what would the Pixies be trying to obtain by hiring Paz? Merely technical skills (she is certainly a far, far better player than I am, that's for sure)? A way to obfuscate talk about Deal, or ensure to the public that the current bass player's role is meaningless, just to maintain the iconic status of KD? Like I said before, I think these are not especially good reasons to change a bass player that was full of smiles and "next-door neighbour" openness, and was doing a good job befriending the fans. Furthermore, she was a bass player that was being featured in magazine covers and websites, photographed alongside the band. It is bizarre that the manager would bar Kim S from doing any interviews, but not from featuring her in photographs and high-profile magazine covers, only to replace her with some other hired gun three months later. Would Paz be showing up again smiling next to the Pixies, like Kim S did? That's really strange to me, and completely unnecessary in a time when the only thing that should matter is the release of more music.

Not at all. That was a stretch. Your posts are okay. You seem like a serious-minded fellow, talking about positive and negative effects and what is best for Pixies. I don't much care about that. Charles reconstituted Pixies. It's his gig. Let him work it out. He says he's a snake, I take him at his word. It's up to him to wow us so sit back. Artists on stage never take kindly to direction from the stalls.

from NME

Shattuck was relieved of her duties as bass player in the band in November after joining in the summer as replacement for founding member, Kim Deal. Speaking in this week's NME, which is available digitally and on newsstands now, Shattuck reveals that she was not expecting to leave the band, having agreed verbally to tour with them into 2014.

"I was surprised. Everything had gone well, the reviews were all good and the fans were super-nice about everything. They were like, 'We love you, New Kim!'," she says. "We said goodbye at the airport and the following morning the manager called me and said: 'The band has made the decision to go with another bass player.' I was shocked."

Speculating as to why she may have been replaced, Shattuck says: "I get the feeling they're more introverted people than I am. Nobody really talked about deep issues, at least out loud. There was a show at the Mayan in Los Angeles where I got overly enthusiastic and jumped into the crowd, and I know they weren't thrilled about that. When I got offstage the manager told me not to do that again. I said, 'Really, for my own safety?' And he said, 'No, because the Pixies don't do that.'"

However, Shattuck does not bear a grudge toward Frank Black and his band mates: "I would have preferred it if they told me face to face as a group, but they're nice people. I'm still a fan of the Pixies!"

That apparently dictatorial display of image control says it all. Pixies are being managed as a brand, not a band. Their PR guys incessantly plug obvious cash grabs ('Minotaur', 'A Visual History', even a bloody Pixies cycling shirt) while remaining as vague as possible about silly issues like Kim Deal's departure, Kim Shattuck's dismissal and a heap of unreleased songs they'll likely drip-feed and milk as much as possible out of over the coming year(s).

Yes, they deserve to finally be recognised and (financially) rewarded for their work. Yes, they should be applauded for finally taking the initiative to record new material, despite some of the material falling a little flat. They don't owe us a damn thing and we should be grateful for what little we're getting. But it's all being handled atrociously. To stay reunited longer than their initial run and have 0.6 songs a year and nostalgia-tour overkill to show for it - all the while letting management pull the strings - makes the original reunion tour's title all the more ominous.

She's right not to be angry. That was great publicity for her and her band, after all. Never heard about the Muffs before.

About not being told face to face about it... well... Pixies don't talk to each other, and Frank is a snake. So...

How were they being vague about Kim Deal's departure? I wouldn't expect the initial statement to list the reasons she left, that's tacky. But the band members have done an excellent job of detailing the hows and whys after it was announced. Not sure what eroticvultcha was getting at there.

I would say it was being handled excellently until this recent episode and the lengthy wait between EP-1 and the new stuff to come. They have let the anticipation build up actually too much, to the point of frustration amongst a lot of the fans. Now some are saying they don't even care (which I don't believe for a second) which needs to be examined. The plan went awry somewhere in the last month or so.

it's obvious now the release plan revolves around videos every month. bagboy 1 at the end of june, bagboy 2 end of july, indie cindy sept 2, andro queen in oct, what goes boom in nov. and finally another toe in december. EP2 will land early to mid january, before the next touring leg begins anyway. then we're looking at may for EP3-- maybe.

i thought for sure they'd skip another toe, alas, here we are.

honestly though, i think the fan frustration with the release schedule is more or less a vocal minority, much as i hate to admit it. i'm still seeing comments on the another toe video talking about it being a new song, like they had no idea the EP even came out! i still think the entire operation was a boner-- an album would have generated WAY more publicity and been WAY less crass in the scheme of things... but this is their great youtube pop experiment.

I am of the strong belief that had the band released an LP rather than an EP, the exact same number of people would know about it today, and there would merely be an extra 7 or 8 songs for Pitchfork and their ilk to say shitty things about (and for everyone and their brother to post on YouTube - thus allowing people the world over to listen to the tracks ad nauseam for free without ever even paying the band for that privilege).

It's 2013. There's no large label and/or distro pushing them (in whatever way that helps these days). A lengthier record would have made no substantial difference.

Not sure why so many folks are so wedded to / continue to festishize the arbitrary LP format as though it's some sort of panacea for the Pixies.

In an alternate universe, the band released a full-length LP, and a substantial number of fans crowed on and on about how disjointed it was and how the band would have been much more savvy and hip to have broken it up into smaller chunks and released them over an extended period of time.

I don't care about LPs and EPs, I still don't understand the point of making us wait so long between EP1 and EP2 !

The other thing I don't understand is the lack of communication with the fans. I know Frank's moto is "We're just here for the music" but I'm not asking much, just an official statement from time to time about stuff like Kim S and most important when to expect EP2 !

I agree with much of this, although I do wonder if fans would have even suggested the EP format as an alternative scenario!
