For you guys who are ok with first hearing the new songs live and dared to click the Youtube links of "Greens and Blues", "Classic Masher", "Blue Eyed Hexe", "Silver Snail" and "Magdalena 318" (did they play any new song besides these ones?), what do you think of them? Any comparisons you would make with the bands other material?
They're live sketches of what is to come in the future, so there's room for the final recordings to surprise, but the quality of the songwriting, I'm curious to read your opinions on this, are they pure Charles gold? Strong enough? Just ok? |

Greens and Blues us vintage Pixies, à la I Bleed, but a bit poppier Classic Masher has huge hit potential, but only heard it BF solo (or with Kim S.) Silver Snail is dark and epic, bossanova style (reminds me of Down To The Well meets Blown Away) Magdalena 318 does not move me so much, but Joey's guitar sounds great Hexe is too simple for my taste, sub U-Mass style
Over all, same ratio of excellence as the first 5 songs released (3 brilliant, 2 less good)

Originally I was not planning on listening to any non EP1 songs before hearing them live. But after seeing much discussion on the live threads I gave in specifically because I did not want to be in the situation where they played a new 'new' song and I would'nt realise it! As regards what I thought of them when I heard them live at Brixton they played
Magdalena 318 Greeen and Blues
I have watched Silver Snail and Hexe on You Tube a couple of times. And there is a very good quality Hexe from the Later show floating around now. Have not heard Classic Masher in any form.
To be honest both Magdalena 318 and Green and Blues come across in a similar vein to the new songs. Kind of a mellower, more mature, mid-pace, not at all manic*. Hearing them live last Friday it felt like a calm in between the storms of say Euphrates. and I've been tired. So fitting in with the Bossanova vibe esp songs like Ana/Havalina/Dig For Fire/Velouria. The thing that comes across most strongly for me is the melody of these tunes. You only have to hear them once or twice and they are inside your head. Silver snail comes across as the most complex melodically. Hexe is simple but I do like it, reminds me of AC-DC.
*Exception is What goes boom. That really rocks hard live. It's excellent.
One thing that is a bit strange seeing them live is afterwards when you check list the songs in your head with the albums is how many classic dont get played. At Brixton there were only 3 or 4 off each album (and no Debaser/Bone Machine/Tame/U-Mass/Crackity Jones) and it took me a moment to realise that is what is going to happen when you throw 7 new orignal songs plus a new cover. But I was not left at all dissapointed, just wanting more.... |

Same in Paris first date : no Debaser, no Tame, no River Euphrates, no U-Mass, no Caribou, no Subbacultcha... What other band can leave out so many classics and still perform an unforgettable show? They:ll probably play them tomorrow...

Could you point us in the direction of a video of this? I've been scanning youtube all weekend and haven't come up with anything, and BBC blocks viewing of their programming to us Yankers...
I've seen/heard all of these unreleased songs live (Hexe, Greens, Silver, and Magdalena at the L.A. shows, and Classic Masher last spring at a solo BF show) and I gotta say that they all have promise to be great. Some I like more than others, Silver Snail being my least favorite. It's a slow-tempo song that I would agree fits in with Bossanova tracks, but in my opinion isn't as good as anything off of that album. Magdalena may actually be my favorite of the unreleased tracks I heard at the Pixies gigs. The chorus melody and Joey's guitar textures really create a beautiful sound, love love love it. Hexe is loud and super screamy, although a bit repetitive, still fun though. And Greens and Blues has a poppy upbeat vibe to it, with a catchy guitar lead on top.
I was really hoping to hear Classic Masher from the band, but alas didn't get it. I think it's the strongest so far, super catchy vocal melody. I can only imagine how a full band version will sound.
I posted youtube vids of all of these songs in other threads, I can post them if people are interested.... lemme know. |

If the Pixies could get any airplay in the US now I think "Classic Masher" could be a genuine alternative rock hit for them (depending on how it's recorded- I keep imagining the finished version will be played similarly to Here Comes Your Man).
They're all good songs. Classic Masher and Greens and Blues are my favorites but Blue Eyed Hexe and Magdalena are good too.
It's funny how dismissive people seem to be of Magdalena. To me it sounds the most like a classic Pixies song of any of the new songs besides What Goes Boom.

No: Magdalena may eventually be good, but seeing it once on youtube then live in Paris really makes me feel it's one of those "Joey not following his instinctive recipe because someome told him to texture it like he was doing a score". No bent notes like in vintage pixies, more sound than melody... It's interesting, but lacks strength. Hearing it live next to old classics shows how meager it is, and they have to force effects to give it consistency. Hope it will grow on me if drumming, bass, backing vocals etc. prove good when produced and released.

I guess all of us Pixies fans must be kinda psychic somehow :) but only in my dreams would I have predicted they'd play Motorway, Alec Eiffel, Subbacultcha into d=r*t (and Sad Punk + Planet Of Sound the day before)
I agree with you, a Trompe Le Monde tour would be magnificent (maybe for it 25th anniversary in 2016?)

I really like Bagboy and Indie Cindy but Greens and Blues is really strong, and the more I hear of it, the more I like it. I reckon whatever release that's on has to be a good one. |

There's a roughly three-week break in the tour this month and the band are taking the holiday season off.
Would be cool as heck for EP 2 to be sneaked out somewhere in there. |

yeah, that's troubling. 60% of what makes bagboy/bam thwok/ain't that pretty worth hearing are joey's contribution. i do like that the ebow or whatever he's using on magdalena weaves in and out of pitch though.
i've gotta say, i hope the demos for this batch of songs get released someday. i can't help but feel they'll sound way better than the norton stuff. |

The demos range in quality. Some sound almost exactly like the releases (maybe thinner in spots or actually stronger in others) while some are just Charles with rhythm guitar. Blue Eyed Hexe is completely different live from it's demo.

I have so far resisted temptation to listen to any of the new songs not on EP1 as i don't like forming an opinion on a rough audio or live recording.
However as Blue eyed Hexe was played on Jools Holland i had to listen.
WOW - i cant wait to hear the recorded version. I love it. It kind of chugs along nicely then gets wild at the end. Subject matter is very old skool Pixies as well. Kinda spooky, is she weird vibe.
I think it'll sound as heavy as What goes boom. I hope so. Very excited for the next EP. |

Considering how overproduced EP1 is, the recorded version will probably sound worse than the Jools Holland performance. |

It's more like that BBC performance sounds pretty damn good, and would be hard to top, IMO.
But hey, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

Yes I agreee it was a great performance. Best of the 4 songs played I thought. I am trying not to watch it too many times (3 so far) so when I hear the recorded version it's still with a fairly clean perspective. |

According to setlist.fm the Pixies played 2 more new songs their Oct. 9 show in Berlin: "Not Tomorrow" and "Overdose Delusion". These aren't on the BMI list and nobody's mentioned them though. Anyone know anything?

A quick Google shows that 'Not Tomorrow' and 'Overdose Delusion' are both instrumentals tracks from the Silent Hill franchise. |

I love that version. Does anybody have an mp3 or youtube clip of JUST that version of Big Prinz? Not the whole show in one long video or file but just THAT song from THAT show?

I agree that Blue Eyed Hexe at Jools was absolutely amazing. I also enjoyed Magdalena 381 at AB Brussels, if you can, check the Youtube video, the sound quality is awesome, and everyone in the band did an excellent performance. All in all, I'm stoked about the new pixies tunes. I think EP 2 will be fabulous! |

as an aside my son is turning 5 in a couple of weeks. he is a big fan. his favorites are broken face, los angeles, and what goes boom.

Wish I had friends like yours.
So Question: What are the 3 best songs we haven't heard yet? Personally, I've been curious about Rats Alive and Um Chagga Lagga just for the titles alone. If you had to compare the all the songs to a previous Pixies album, which would it be? So far they seem very Bossanova (which I love).

I have a very bad feeling about Um Chagga Lagga. If it's anything like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYj5o4kQsXs I won't know what to think. Hope for the best prepare for the worst.
