I think there may have been an old thread along these lines, but can't find it.

Some of Frank's best tunes are often overlooked imo. I think these are great, but under-appreciated:

SOLID GOLD
STEAK N SABRE
SO HARD TO MAKE THINGS OUT
SKELETON MAN
1826

Your thoughts?

SOLID GOLD definitely has one of the best openings of any frank song. I SWITCHED YOU goes for a similar thing, but SG does it with such awesome fucking ease.

is MY FAVORITE KISS underrated? it's one of my favorites, at least.

FAST MAN, YOU CAN'T CRUCIFY YOURSELF, DON'T CRY THAT WAY, WANDERLUST.

all of NSE seems to be underrated (a travesty), but particularly COrRINA is the fucking shit.

ANOTHER VELVET NIGHTMARE

LLANO DEL RIO has some of my favorite lyric/music combos (very similar to how i feel aboUt CHIP AWAY BOY).

I've always particularly liked "Village of the Sun", "Man of Steel" and "abstract plain", "Western star".. but yeah, there's so many and some of the ones mentioned above definitely make my list... LLano del Rio, Don't cry that way, San antonio, Tx,...

When I play NSE, I always, always, always repeat "Corrina" about five times.

I think "Holland Town" is really beautiful, musically and lyrically.

Frank song I think would be perfect for a slow, torchy jazz (with a vocalist) cover version: "How You Went So Far"

Abstract Plain isn't underrated is it?! Popmatters called it a perfect song and it ended up on the best-of if I remember correctly.

Fast Man, Golden Shore, I'm Not Dead I'm In Pittsburgh, The Real El Rey, White Noise Maker, Pan American Highway, Everything Is New (one of his catchiest songs), Jaina Blues (same again, with some of his best shouting), When I Go Down On You, Stars.

Skeleton Man and Village of the Sun are great shouts too, though I think the latter could have been improved.

Is So.Bay underrated? Only started listening to Pistolero in the past two to three months and that's improved with each and every listen. Superb progression of sounds. The Swimmer is another one which I'm unsure if it's underrated or not. Such vocals.

Where are the songs rated?

I'll look-up songs that were not on a best-of or the #9 podcast.

Not sure if it's underrated but I never seem to see many 'Heloise' comments on here. Fantastic song in my opinion. Probably my favourite on Devil's Workshop.

[edit] I'll just add 'So Hard To Make Things Out' while it's fresh in my mind. Very atmospheric, energetic, frantic and then, I don't know, just beatiful towards the end.

I guess you're right, maharal, "Abstract plain" is probably one of the ones that have gotten some recognition. I don't actually really know what the reviews are or what the critics say in general. I guess I'm just looking at it like all of his songs are pretty much underrated, in the grand scheme of things. So I guess I was just thinking of some personal favorites.

'Corrina', 'Cinema Star' and 'Lake of Sin' from NSE for definite. Awesome tunes, let down by the production and lack of exposure.

I also love 'Polly's into Me'.

Going a little further back, 'Elijah' is a cracking song.

Yes I agree with all of the calls above: I SWITCHED YOU is top shelf - and LAKE OF SIN is also sublime. For me THE GOLEM as a whole is perfect, but again I think that project is very under-rated.

I could go on and on...

Living On Soul
Just a Little
Bad Harmony
Can I Get a Witness

The cover of the Beau Brummels Can I Get a Witness is a fantastic version! I miss that era of The Catholics post Pistolero and pre DITS, it was an exciting time in the evolution of the Catholics.

It took a few listens for me to appreciate Astaroth; at first I thought it was kinda grating, but I now I love it. Great piano and BF is in top form with his singing, or yelping. It's fun in a Virginia Reel sort of way. Then there's the bit where Ralph Carney goes mental with his saxophone - that's pure Steve McKay rock and roll, man! The song's also catchy as hell. Good call johnny.

I was listening to it on the bus the other day and one thing still irks me a little - the use of the word 'dude'. I think it's just the context of the film that makes it annoying for me.. just seems a little out of place in the world of the Golem.

Bleh, only a small grievance. Damn good song.

Yeah, good stuff, Maharal. The 'dude' never bothered me, in fact I never really gave it another thought beyond, hey great lyrics! Besides the general kick-assedness of the song, probably my favorite part about it is the inhale-singing he does between certain lines - "KQUEEOOWWERRRRIERRELLLWWWCKK <breath> What am I to do-ooo?"

I like the weird squeal thing he does at the 16 second mark. Think he does this in a couple of other songs too, can't remember which though. Possibly the more recent versions of Nimrod's Son.

I think there's something wonderful about the main refrain though, the "What am I to do-ooo", especially towards the end when it comes across as sorrowful, maybe even poignant. However, it's then offset by the rambunctious "I'M JUST AN EVIL DUDE!!" bit, making it a whole flurry of schizophrenic emotions. Just superb.

I fucking love Black Francis.

This has also alerted me to the song's actual title, "Astaroth" (confirmed by a quick Google search - Amazon and the lyrics sites use this spelling), not "Astraroth". Pesky iTunes.

That's a great set although I don't like You Can't Crucify Yourself.

A one disc FMRM would probably have been his best record.

His BEST record?? It may have been a lot better received with some paring down but I don't know if you can put it against Dog in the Sand, Teenager, Orange, or even SMYT.
