I don't think I could whittle it down to ten. Twenty or thirty maybe. And if I did that it'd be more "top 20 or 30 favourites" since it's hard to come up with the criteria for what constitutes his "best" songs.
Good to see The Happening and Don't Ya Rile 'Em featured so high by the way. Underrated gems. |

I'm not feeling The Sad Punk...
I shall ponder. Compositions is a different term.

Sad Punk??????????????????????????????????????????? .... ??????????????!!!
This is an impossible question and perhaps the subject for a future podcast... someday. It's hard to even pick the ten best songs on Teenager nevermind spanning a solo career, the Catholics, Pixies, a second solo career, Grand Duchy, a couple Nashville albums, ....
I wouldn't even know how to begin but I'd know how not to begin. Sad Punk.

I like the word composition. That makes a question that hasn't been asked too often. |

Sad Punk is one of BF's best screamers. I've never done karaoke but I'd love to try my luck with that song.
Wouldn't be in my top 10 or 20 though. Will try and compile a list tomorrow. |

Can't believe 'Pan American Highway' hasn't merited a mention........ Still, all about opinions as we say. That's my favourite moment no question, the other 9 could change with each passing day. 'Speedy Marie' would be there most days as well. |

ok. SAD PUNK HAS AMAZING LYRICS AND AN AMAZING STRUCTURE! such a perfect fast screaming/slow down and get pretty one two punch.
and obviously speedy marie is one of the ten best. that's what great about frank. he churns them out. and let me say i should have put LIVING ON SOUL. i heard it live first, and i though to myself "is this a cover? it's sounds like it has been around forever..." CULT OF FRANK, no sad punk? come on. also, letter to roswell/motoway to memphis. and all my ghosts. and billy radcliffe. and white noise maker. and two reelers. and.......PRAY A LITTLE FASTER! |

a lot of what you mentioned, bonedry, was on the initial list i made. but i really tried to be honest and whittle it down to 10. eliminating the last 9 was excruciating. i'm surprised to see DEAD on my list, but not the happening, speedy marie or calistan. it seems like insanity, but i tried to be true to the term "composition," whatever that means.
anyway, it's fun giving this kind of thought to this music that i've taken for granted as being the best ever.
i've always preferred the BBC version of DEAD, but this little exercise made me a true believer in the album version.

Wsheeww.... Tough one. My list would look nothing like the OP's... assuming I could actually compile such a list. Maybe one night I'll get hammered and regale you all of my tales of FB greatness. Tonight's not the night though. You can all wait with bated breath until then. Go ahead. Bate.

But the cheerfu' spring came kindly on, And show'rs began to fall; John Barleycorn got up again, And sore surprised them all.

I actually did a paper on the song and picked it largely in part because of the Robbie Burns connection. It was a Human Geography class and the assignment was to pick a song and analyse whether or not it was a Folk song. If i can find it, i'll post it.
