IIRC It was going to be a proper album but FB wasn't 100% satisfied with it so it never got released, however he gave a few copies to some kids after a show once and from there it made its way onto the internet. I think most of the songs also appeared as B-sides or on those FB&tC iTunes compliations.

I believe it was made after DITS, or not?

it sure sounds like it. but i assumed it was made before since some of its songs were used as b-sides to DiTS singles. i could, however, be very mistaken about that.

"Constant Sorrow Man," "Pan American Highway," "Angst," and "Sleep" are the same versions as the released CD single versions (and the itunes comps). The remaining six are all versions exclusive to this album. It's definitely one to have. |

There is a torrent floating around out there that has all post-Pixies work on it. Since I've bought hard copies of all the albums,(except Oddballs, which I couldn't find anywhere) I think it's even legal for me to download it. I gladly give my money to Charles for any of his products. But just search "Frank Black" on torrentz.com and you'll find it. |

Yeah, Nonstoperotik is some kind of well recorded version of SSMVGM. A tight and varied little album with a typically FB mystic-desert-punk-pop-feeling. That's a good oportunity to listen again to SSMVGD. After all that's one of the best FB's album, I never understood why he said it "didnt sound like a record". It sounds much more like a record than Devil's Workshop to me! Much before he became Black Francis again, I thought SSMVGD was the Black Francisest of all Frank Black albums, because of those "mexican-country-punk" accoustic guitar rythms. Just listened to the podcast, Cinema Star rules!

I see what Frank means SSMVGM sounds more like a demo of an album than an actually album. I like it, but as a bootleg lost album, I think Frank made the right call. |

I'm pretty certain SSMVGD was recorded in 2000, before DITS. |

Frank Black talking abut SSMVGD:
"DOG IN THE SAND is our third record. We attempted a fourth in San Francisco a few months ago, but maybe I was getting cocky. But we did get some good B-SIDES for the single release of ROBERT ONION."

Getting a little off track with talk of SSMVGD. NSE is a ceremonial, a Fabergé egg for Easter.

Yes but I use to talk about music I already listened. And i dont feel like downloading that new one and discover it threw my crapy computer sound. I'll get it in the store first and sit in the sofa like in the old times. |

Anyway, the songs included in the podcast are really great. Rabbit hole is stuck in my head, the guitar note by note, almost classical, is really astonishing. The voice effect is nice too. It has a real emotionnal feeling from the very first listen. Somehow it reminds me of the unconventional production on Do what you want G(...) and Radio Lizards. I recon he should try more often those kinds of unrock strange production. |

what is the M.O. around for listening to new albums? is the tradition to drink wine and listen to the album in the dark on the tuesday it comes out? I will totally do that? or will there be a circle jerk? i'm just saying. that's what kind of fan i am. either way i'm down.

You know I was thinking that too. That there is a religious/ceremonial feel that has more in common with the spirit of Christmass than SSMVGD.

Question for Charles: Have there been any developments with the art film commissioned to accompany the album? Will it be coming out as a dvd along with NSE? Also, all the songs I've heard sound great, good job! |

That one's available commercially so it shouldn't get posted here. Brian can clarify though.

In an earlier post I probably sounded less than enthusiastic about the NSE version of Rabbits. After a few more listens I'm convinced it's a thing of beauty. So much so that the original demo seems almost irrelevant now.
As for the album itself: Everyone's going to have their own opinion, but I think it's going to stand as one of his very best. It's loose and varied with all his styles and strengths represented. There's a perfect balance to the track order too. The album feels natural, almost effortless--just Frank running through a bunch of new songs, but there's something really special about this one.

It sounds like Charles and Eric were the most creative (speaking strictly about studio production) than I've ever heard from any of the man's albums. I think Rabbits is cool, DMC to me sounds great and pounding, but the most exciting thing I heard was Cinema Star. I think Brian said something like it's the most excited he's been about a new track in a while, and I have to agree. I've found this last bit of this thread amusing cause I'm constantly telling my girlfriend what the man's best song is, but it seems to change with the seasons for me.

Cinema Star is so exciting because you've got Charles' song in EDF's hands (thanks Brian for the info) and Dave Philips guitar at the end where he cuts out and then Eric takes the notes even higher and...
I wish it went on forever, maybe live someday...
what a song!
Am I the only one here thinking that Cinema Star has something to do with Being John Malkovich movie? |

Non Stop Erotic is reminding me of one of my favorite albums (on repeat the last few weeks), Hounds of Love by Kate Bush, specifically the Fairlight backing. It seems like edf is always striving for the perfectly judged synthesized backing, the kind that are easily found on Kate's songs, like Hounds of Love's title track.

Sometimes Charles makes a song that is more subbtle than his own ability as a guitarist. When he plays rabbits alone like on the demo you can tell the chords attack is a bit heavy compared to the song itself! As a composer, he's limitless and unclassifiable, but as a musician, he's "just" a rock genius. |

I don't know about that but Cinema Star could have sat quite happily on the "Pretty In Pink" soundtrack. Ironic that Charles should do the kind of song that Pixies blew out of the water 20 years ago. Oh well, it makes a kind of post-Grand Duchy sense I suppose.

Yep, it has the makings of a damn fine album... on a minor note, though, I wish they chose a different cover

There is a "covers problem" since the cult of ray. I dont even think about it anymore. But Frank Black Francis, Bluefinger and Black Letter Days are Ok and Oddballs is great. Conclusion: dont MAKE a cover, just take any existing item that looks good! |

I've finally come to like the new version of Rabbits, but I have to wonder why he started singing it pretty instead of with so much angst, like he did at the Cafe du Nord show. Maybe it was just his mood that night.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |
