haha, I just listened to it for the first time through headphones and kept thinking there was a loose wire - pretty annoying. Is it a bassoon or oboe?

I'm not disappointed, the song is just fine. I just disagree that it is or may come to be known as one of his all time bests. It probably sounds groovy wherever it is in the sequence.

I really like the above link, would've been great if frank had put vocals over that one!
I like this rabbits, and its probably the best arrangement to sonically suit the album. But still, i'd love to hear frank put vocals over that instrumental, i think it'd really be something special.

EDIT: I'm aware that he IS singing over the original instrumental, but with overdubs - i'm saying that while the overdubs are nice, i'd like to hear it without them as a counterpoint

I just listened to the podcast and I'm impressed with NSE. It sounds like Charles and Eric were the most creative (speaking strictly about studio production) than I've ever heard from any of the man's albums. I think Rabbits is cool, DMC to me sounds great and pounding, but the most exciting thing I heard was Cinema Star. I think Brian said something like it's the most excited he's been about a new track in a while, and I have to agree. I've found this last bit of this thread amusing cause I'm constantly telling my girlfriend what the man's best song is, but it seems to change with the seasons for me.

They played Wild Son on XFM during his live appearance there. I can't find any captures online and the listen again has expired unfortunately.

I am really looking fwd to the films that will accompany NSE. Has potential to be a DVD keeper.

By the way, anyone seen the David Lynch short film "Rabbits"? Nothing to do with this song, but would've been interesting hearing it playing over the credits...

Let me just tell you, I'm pretty fucking pumped about the release of this album. From what I've heard of the leakers, this one is THE ONE many - critics especially - have been clamoring for:

A return to full blown studio production for a FrankBlackFrancis album. Unless he and EDF have gotten so good at really enriching a track with one take, from what I can tell, there is some studio magic to be heard on this one, and I can't wait to hear the whole shebang. Critics have been bitching for years (especially those knuckle-heads over at pitchfork) about what they perceive to be a lack of attention to detail in the studio on everything since Ray. I think they're full of shit, but this one should shut them up on that argument anyway.

Side note, if hardcore Grateful Dead fans are Deadheads, Phish fans are Phish-heads, Buffet fans are Parrot-heads (can't stand Buffet BTW), what are we?...

Blackheads?

I'll mash your perfect parts.

Blackheads! I love it!
Though in response, there's just no winning pitchfork over. They'll just complain its not as good as the Pixies, or Animal Collective or Vampire Weekend, or some other shit blog band (not referring to the Pixies there).

Cinema Star is so exciting because you've got Charles' song in EDF's hands (thanks Brian for the info) and Dave Philips guitar at the end where he cuts out and then Eric takes the notes even higher and...

I wish it went on forever, maybe live someday...

what a song!

I agree, except i like the devils workshop, at least i think it's decent (and funny and opposite of what one would picture for an album cover with that title.)

I think the christmass one would be fine if the album was called "Christm-Ass"

the non stop e cover is cool. it's different. it's not the best. but it's good. and frank looks awesome. seeing his armpit on the cover of an album with that title is pretty sweet.

Come on... Have you ever listened to the original versions of Handyman, Duke of Earl, The Big Hurt, 666, Cecilia Ann? NARC? You know Frank has the habit of making gems out of crappy songs.

Denis

I like the original versions of all of those songs. OF the ones you listed above I think duke of earl is probably the only one where i like his version much much more.

I love this part... Yeah, we did it!

Not sure about all of the above but shit I only realised today how great this song is. Wait a minute, that great organ part is a dead ringer for a svelte santiago solo. You were right. As far as I'm concerned this is track 12 of the album. It's a great closer.

Got to hear the complete album for the first time today and I love it! If I had to compare it to any of his previous albums I would actually pick SSMVGD:

O My Tidy Sum=Pan American Highway
Six Legged Man=Angst
Rabbits=Sleep

I was actually hoping Rabbits and Dead Man's Curve would be the demo
versions we all heard a couple years back, but I can appreciate these new versions too. I'm just hoping at some point for quality-sounding releases of those raw, earlier versions.

I wasn't completely thrilled with the title track when I heard it a few weeks back, but it works great within the context of the entire album. And yes, Cinema Star is awesome!

Whereabouts were those raw demos leaked, MajorKey? Or are you just referring to the live performances that have been in circulation for a while - the ones Brian featured on the latest podcast?

Reviewers have had copies for a while now, someone even put a copy up on ebay so it will probably leak soon.

I'm just kind of a cinema star...
