What?
And I'm not trying to be funny here. Those are easily the three best tracks -- and on the best Catholics album.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Then we'll have to start another thread - "which bit of the podcast did you skip?"
I like to listen to albums as a whole, warts'n'all, to get the whole feeling, so I don't really skip any tracks. Most of the FB,FB&C and BF studio albums deserve listening to that way, apart from FM/RM which is nearly all warts. |

Honeycomb All of it
"Now you're officially my woman. Kudos. I can't say I don't envy you."
Imagining you putting in the CD, skipping all the tracks and then taking it out again. Your Honeycomb ritual.
Anyone else skip Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day?
_______________ Ed is the hoo hoo
The song or the 'album'? Actually, in both cases the answer is no. That is a great song for the car on a spring or summer day with the windows down and driving along a country highway. And the Sister Isabelle on that cover is great for shredding your vocal cords later on that same trip (especially the end) not to mention I love the keys.
"Now you're officially my woman. Kudos. I can't say I don't envy you."
The albums Oddballs, OMRFTH, and SSMVGD are all great albums and for me on a par with the others. There's not a track on any of them I'd skip except for SSMVGD's god awful title track (though I like Honeycomb's version of the song and would be happy to hear it out on a country road).
Strange you mentioning Sister Isabelle as I was playing the John Peel session of the song yesterday. That's a great 5 song session by the way.
Great idea for a podcast. Should generate a lot of heat. And I'm happy to recant on the SSMVGD title track if you promise not to play it on that podcast. Pleeeeease!!!

Haha, good podcast. I'm going to have to say Punk Rock City does indeed rock though. Also, i can't believe test pilot blues is skipped! It's one of the best songs on the album i think. The worst song by miles on Bluefinger is clearly your mouth into mine. |

To those who said they skip 1826... GO FUCK THE DEVIL!
No, but I can understand it not being the most enjoyable as a song, but 1826 has a manic, frantic, freight train of guitars power behind it that is unparalleled in Frank's catalog.

Blast Off - Skipped only in haste to taste the brilliance of the rest of the album.
Hang On to your Ego - Hmmm..? dunno.

You "skip" Manitoba ? Then you reach the "nothing" song because Manitoba just is the last one on the record. But maybe there are different versions of this album?
About Sing For Joy, I think the music is not at the level of the words. It's a purely litterary song. |

I agree with coastline. I was addicted to all of those songs at one point. Great album but I will almost always skip "This Old Heartache". Don't dig the piano.

I'm a little late for this one, but here goes:
FB: Fu Manchu (rarely) TOTY: Fazer Eyes (often), I Could Stay Here Forever (rarely) COR: Punk Rock City (rarely), Dance War (often) Ob: You Never Heard About Me (often) FB&TC: King & Queen Of Siam (often), 666 (rarely, and I love other versions, especially KB) P: I Switched You (rarely), Tiny Heart (often) DITS: Llano Del Rio (maybe once or twice, ages ago) BLD: How You Went So far (rarely, and due to sequencing), True Blue (rarely), Black Rider II (often) DW: Are You Headed My Way (almost always) SMYT: Jaina Blues (often) OMRFTH: Constant Sorrow Man (often) SO: Take What You Want (often), Snake Oil (rarely), Sleep (often) HC: Violet (rarely) FMRM: Golden Shore (rarely), Down To You (often), Highway To Lowdown (often) - BUT CD1 7-11 has horrible sequencing: mostly great but too similar BF: Lolita (often, but girlfriend Pistolaura keeps playing it), She Took All The Money (often) 7F: I Sent Away (rarely)
...but if someone would have made me a mix tape consisting of the above, I would've gone on to buy all the records anyway.

4me, there are none that i skip, EXCEPT Jaida Blues; i've always said that it sucks the wang - definitely his worst (actually that album is his weakest, too). i believe that he was in a bad headspace/situation at the time; it sure showed, as evidenced by the 2 records that make a sandwich of it). And, one more thing...Punk Rock City is da bomb, baby!!

Nowadays I usually play FB records to hear specific songs rather than the albums themselves. If I was told to erase 16 songs from the catalogue "..or else you'll get it!" then these 16 would have to go:
Punk Rock City, The Creature Crawling, New House of The Pope, This Old Heartache, Dark End of the Street, The Shrimp Song, Violet, You Can't Crucify Yourself, The End Of The Summer, When The Paint Grows Darker Still, I'm Not Dead (I'm In Pittsburgh), Down To You, Kiss My Ring, Elijah, The Real El Ray, Sad Old World.
That's a pretty good list of hate-worthy songs. "Kiss my ring" makes me shudder. And one of those songs should have been left as a personal Valentine (in my opinion).
I always picture an "o" ring for kiss my ring. which makes me like it less and more. |

I can't see why else they'd give it air. Don't play it anywhere around me unless you like the smell of ear vomit... OK it's not that bad. I think I remember liking the original.
I enjoy Creature Crawling (especially the 'Did you know about that?' part), even though it's a bit hokey.

I agree with viliande about Real El Ray- that song is pure gold and makes FM/RM worth listening to.
This thread bums me out a little- it makes me think that all of Frank Black's album could have been classics if they had been fleshed out a little more. But at the same time I think it is exciting as a fan that Black Francis releases so much music!
I pretty think that until honeycomb that most of the albums are about as perfect as one could expect. |
