Orange: none Teenager: Abstract Plain(every once in a while) Vanishing Spies(quite often) Fazer Eyes(quite often) Cult of Ray: Creature Crawling(just about every single time) FB&C Brown: none Pistolero: So Hard To Make Things Out(just about every single time) Black Letter Days: End of Miles(quite often) Jane Queen of Love(every once in a while) Devil's Workshop: His Kingly Cave(quite often) Dog in the Sand: Stupid Me(just about every single time) Show Me Your Tears: Everything is New(every once in a while) My Favorite Kiss(every once in a while) Honeycomb: I Burn Today(quite often) At the Dark End of the Street(quite often) Strange Goodbye(quite often) Fastman/Raiderman Disc One: End of Summer(just about every single time) When the Paint Grows Darker Still(quite often)
Unfortnately I gotta stop there for now; how freakin' prolific can an artist be? Black has got to be coming close to Bob in output; has anyone done the math?
If this is all I am skipping I must be listening to way too much Frank Black.

Yeah, I felt the same way, but the live version was much better than the recorded.
I skip the Honeycomb and FM/RM albums. And 1826.

I'm not much of a skipping songs kind of a guy but the acapella version of Six Sixty Six is just about the only song in his whole back catalogue that I simply can't bring myself to listen to. It was the same when I heard it done live. Love the song but without instruments I just can't take it.

Yeah I love the live version from the Nadine single though. And I did say only every once in a while. |

It is kind of crazy, but whenever people start discussing albums invariably someone mentions which songs they skip. I figured it would be a good thread. Definitely was not meaning to make anyone sad. |

Alright, I'll bite.
Songs I tend to skip over (maybe a podcast idea down the road...):
Orange Album None
Teenager None
Cult of Ray The Marsist (only occasionally) Punk Rock City (always)
Brown Back to Rome (occasionally) 666 (more in the past than now)
Pistolero None
BLD 1826 True Blue (I used to, now I love it and also consider Jane incomplete without it)
DW None
SMYT Jaina Blues (only occasionally, and usually out of excitement for NHOP) Goodbye Lorraine (on days where the steel guitar intro is too much for me)
Honeycomb All of it (some has since grown on me but this is definitely my most ignored FB album)
FM/RM Crucify (occasionally) Down To You Where The Wind Is Going (is it sacrilege to ignore the closer?)
"Now you're officially my woman. Kudos. I can't say I don't envy you." |

Imagining you putting in the CD, skipping all the tracks and then taking it out again. Your Honeycomb ritual.
Anyone else skip Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day?

I skip 'Down to You' and 'Sad Old World' on FMRM. Otherwise, I enjoy the record.

For once I'll be serious. I've never understood why people didn't like Punk Rock City. Am I missing something, is there something wrong with the lyrics? I love Punk Rock City, it's a classic FB track to me. Anyway, to each his own, but I really wonder why gets this particular treatment.
Back to the thread: I rarely skip tracks on an album. So:
FB: none TOTY: none CoR: none. Skipping tracks from that record makes absolutely no sense. FB&TC: I Gotta Move Pistolero: most of the record. In fact I rarely play it. DiTS: none BLD: NONE DW: Bartholomew sometimes SMYT: agree, Goodbye Lorraine is better on live acoustic versions than on the record. I love everything else. HC & FMRM: never listen to those

Nowadays I usually play FB records to hear specific songs rather than the albums themselves. If I was told to erase 16 songs from the catalogue "..or else you'll get it!" then these 16 would have to go:
Punk Rock City, The Creature Crawling, New House of The Pope, This Old Heartache, Dark End of the Street, The Shrimp Song, Violet, You Can't Crucify Yourself, The End Of The Summer, When The Paint Grows Darker Still, I'm Not Dead (I'm In Pittsburgh), Down To You, Kiss My Ring, Elijah, The Real El Ray, Sad Old World.

Yup. That one's for personal reasons. I'm not saying I don't like these tracks (not saying I do). I like my legs, that's all. |

That's a pretty good list of hate-worthy songs. "Kiss my ring" makes me shudder. And one of those songs should have been left as a personal Valentine (in my opinion). |

Jane takes us back to the "Awesomeness of the Catholics" thread (or whatever it was called. They should be a thread called that). It's an ok song on the CD. But it comes to life when the band plays it live.
Can't bring myself to write that last sentence in the past tense.

I don't understand why anyone would skip The Creature Crawling! I absolutely LOVE it....especially the intro.
There must be something wrong with me - I ALWAYS skip Sing For Joy and Manitoba. I forgot Tiny Heart even existed because it never made it into my ipod. |

I love the album which I got off stu. Thanks stu. But that one song, SSMVGD, is so horribly sung that I can hardly believe my ears. They must have had a great time in the studio that day. I can't see why else they'd give it air. Don't play it anywhere around me unless you like the smell of ear vomit... OK it's not that bad. I think I remember liking the original.
I enjoy Creature Crawling (especially the 'Did you know about that?' part), even though it's a bit hokey.

Interestingly, I think it's the only song from Pistolero that I don't have any live version of. And yeah, it sucks.

Tiny Heart is def one Frank's worst! I like Creature Crawling- that songs kinda fun!
I agree with viliande about Real El Ray- that song is pure gold and makes FM/RM worth listening to.
This thread bums me out a little- it makes me think that all of Frank Black's album could have been classics if they had been fleshed out a little more. But at the same time I think it is exciting as a fan that Black Francis releases so much music! |

I generally listen to the albums as a whole and for the most part, they are all top notch. I have rediscovered "Cult of Ray" in recent years and really like it now. I never liked Pistolero or his Nashville albums much. Devil's Workshop is hit and miss - it is more or less a collection of outakes, but has its moments.
Favourite albums - Orange, Black Letter Days, first Catholics album. Dog in the Sand, Show me Your Tears and Bluefinger are all up there as well. If you include Pixies output, then throw in everything sans Trompe Le Monde. |

The song or the 'album'? Actually, in both cases the answer is no. That is a great song for the car on a spring or summer day with the windows down and driving along a country highway. And the Sister Isabelle on that cover is great for shredding your vocal cords later on that same trip (especially the end) not to mention I love the keys.
