The last Posies album, Every Kind of Light, is dull Indie pop.Only one song, All in a day's work, reminds of their 90's stuff. Stringfellow plays in REM's tour band nowadays, whose last few bland records seem to have rubbed off.
Stringfellow played a solo gig in Jo'burg when he toured SA with REM. It was quite an impressive show. His solo records could be good from what I've heard.

Remi's Podcast
Obviously a fan of 70s rock, which I am too, though I've kind of finished with it these days and tend to find contemporary acts trying to recreate it well... uninteresting or even comical, though unintentionally so. And that is how things are kicked off with Wolfmother, though I think that they did a great job of channeling that 70s rock energy and sound, I found it a little cheesy and the breakdown really overdone. I enjoy it on a certain level but overall not something I'd seek out, I guess. 1975 I'd heard before, though no idea where, but I quite like that song, very catchy. I may have to check out more from Hushpuppies.
Stuck in the Sound, the bass line almost reminds me of a riff on Tame, but I guess that Tame is a fairly classic bassline already. I'm torn between enjoying the vocals and being annoyed, but I think the more I listen, the more I lean to enjoy. The Posies song I'd heard before, I always found that one boring. Sorry. Actually, this whole set I really disliked. My Morning Jacket has great music but these vocals have no division between enjoy/annoy. It's out-and-out on my nerves. Too bad, it wrecks what could've been a really great song. The Two Gallants song is easily my least favourite on this podcast, I can't convey the amount I dislike this song. On the plus side, after this lowpoint, it's all uphill.
And it's a big jump right from the start. The next set starts off with Fugu's A Bigger Splash sounds very Beatlesesque, one of my favourites on the podcast. The Phoenix song I was sort of bored by, and Tahiti 80 had some cool elements, particularly enjoyed the brass, but overall left me feeling indifferent and wondering how much longer the song was going to go on. Too much longer, apparently.
HAL I found okay, no real comments here. I wasn't in the mood for it that day, but I think on the right day I'd really enjoy it. Thumbs up. The Troy Von Balthazar song is clearly showcasing the female vocalist's skills or else she steals the show and in any case, very beautiful. The song just wasn't really my cup of tea, it gets better as it picks up a little, I like the minors and dissonance coupled with "Oh, it's perfect". Then, two more great songs, first, Neil Young. This one's a no-brainer thumbs up, I don't think I could listen to a whole disc of his but I always enjoy the tracks individually. Then you put on what is probably my favourite song on the podcast and a band I'm interested in finding out more about, The Coral. I don't know what I love about it, but I do. Incidentally, I really enjoy the transition from Neil Young into this song, well done! Great set.
The next set is The Decemberists, a band I just got into last year. Hadn't heard this song, enjoyed it as I tend to enjoy all their stuff. The Bees song sounded familiar, is it an old classic redone?
Finally, the podcast closers all left me with nothing to say. I liked the Stephen Malkmus song, not sure enough to hunt down more from him, but maybe if you have some suggestions. I'd been meaning to check him out so thanks. The Garlic song I really have nothing to say about. It was okay, just not interesting. Same with Teenage Fanclub. The final French track was a fun way to end the podcast. Though the vocals grated in a way that I can't quite define.
All in all, a good mix, just that some of it wasn't my cup de the'. Thanks Remi.

Dean's Mix
I hated the Ween songs at first, but after a few listens, Happy Coloured Marbles has grown on me immensely, really like it, Powder Blue is still a bit superfluous really. I like it more, but it started from a low base. Beulah just seemed like middle of the road music with no hooks, nothing to grab onto. It was ok, as was Grim Fandango. The Arcade Fire are a band that everyone raves about, but who I don't really get (or don't get why). Their stuff is good, but not that good, and certainly not good enough to inspire the fervour that surrounds them. Good track though.
AC Newman was pretty good and I would be interested in hearing the album. Again the Decemberists don't quite do it for me....I think I just don't quite like the guys voice. Woooooaaahhhh, the Kaiser Chiefs.....I Predict A Riot is the only song they've done that doesn't make me want to smash something. I even questioned at one point if I actually did like them and was in denial. I wasn't. I don't.
Falconhawk was ok, and while I like a good burst of country as much as the next man, Greenfield Main didn't quite strike a chord, despite trying to pull at my heart strings *sniff* Amazingly, Controller.Controller was one of the three songs I'd already heard from this mix after I went on a Canadian bender (as it were), it's good, not great, but I kinda like them and I'm prepared to give them every opportunity to wow me.
Andrew Bird - I like 'I', but Nervous Tic.. is an amazing song, and I don't know how many times I've listened to it since. Fantastic. I've downloaded some live tracks from archive.org, as a result.
So, in summary,
Favourites: Andrew Bird- Nervous Tic...., AC Newman and Ween - Happy... OK: Decemberists, Arcade Fire, The Old Soul Aaaaargghhhh: Kaiser Chiefs, Greenfield Main
That which does not kill me postpones the inevitable.

Cool, thanks Steve. Glad the Marbles is growing and of course that I can help spread the gospel of Andrew Bird. He's so underexposed it's criminal.
Looks like AC Newman is pretty much a hit with everyone, I'll definitely put another track on the next podcast. It is a really great album.

Seriously, Where's the Mozzarella
Alright, so I've done it. I've listened through Brian's podcast enough to feel able to provide a review of sorts. It starts with Modest Mouse, a band I believe that I feel the same way about as Brian. Generally, I really dislike the vocal delivery, with a few exceptions. After hearing Float On, I tried out that album but got nowhere with it. There may have been one other song on there I liked. Brian's inclusion of Third Planet was a good choice, I actually enjoy that particular song. I'm sure if I had the patience, I could put together a disc full of Modest Mouse songs I like by weeding the rest from their albums. This would be on it. The next song, Art Givest(?) I'm not sure how I feel about. Interesting, eclectic, but I suppose not my taste.
Before going to the next set, I should mention that I quite like the background music Brian's got there. Loose Fur's Epistolic is a generally agreeable number, and being that I enjoy both Wilco and Jim O'Rourke's solo efforts to a certain degree, I'm not surprised. I don't love it, but I like it. Could be a grower? Certainly, Holly's Quick Temper is not. A bunch of musicians, obviously talented, aware that each other are also playing, but rarely acting on it. The beginning wasn't too bad, and I do like the parts where they all hit the same note repeatedly before breaking back into the mess okay, but otherwise it seems to me like they are more interested in showing off their skills and really wanking on their instrument rather than doing something for the benefit of the song, if you know what I mean. I generally feel the same way about really cheesy/fast/wanky guitar solos in rock.
Young Einstein is a truly bizarre song and I appreciate it for that. It works well as a short number. It's definitely unlike anything I listen to, don't really like screaming, but I somehow like this song. I'm genuinely perplexed as to why, but it's got something going on. Skin Tension is kind of cool too, I actually think I'd better check these guys out.
The Cracker song is indeed tasty and feeds my growing fear that I'm becoming my mother with my growing enjoyment of country music. It's a nice blend of country and pop but not in a Shania way. I feel dirty now for even suggesting a blend. Just those "Dooh dooh dooh's" made me say it. I'm sorry! The Robert Pollard song is interesting. Did he work with Doug Gillard on that one? Those are the songs I tend to enjoy most from him. Once filtered, I like the remains of his works generally.
Forever, One Reporter's Opinion kind of sounds like something I've heard before, but I'm not familiar with the Minutemen's stuff, or at least I thought I wasn't. Who knows. Don't hate it, but it doesn't do much for me. It's kind of what I was talking about before with the jazz. I'm sure it's cool to watch live, but otherwise, sort of bored. I also felt a little bored by the next track.
Victoria was a lot of fun, though, I really haven't heard much Kinks.
I liked the music you used to introduce Ween. I did indeed fail, though to be fair to me, I'd assumed everyone had heard them or I might not have chosen the tracks I did (not that I dislike either, but they're not my faves). The Ween jingle is great, and the big "F-u" to Pizza Hut as a result of being told to "redo" it is great too. The song before that I didn't really find too interesting.
I acutally didn't mind the jazz song Brian included here. I don't categorically hate jazz and don't mind most of it live since even when they're going nuts it's impressive, but I don't love it all either. The song is moody and has some neat stuff going on but it's not what I'm generally in the mood for. You've Been Faithful To Us is a cool song, very interesting. It sounds sort of familiar but not quite. I like it.
And yeah, I've not heard that B&S song, but it's pretty cool. I wouldn't say everyone likes them, but I generally don't mind them. They've got some great stuff and some boring stuff. I guess, who doesn't? Funny Little Frog is great. The next song (Gorgeous Boys of Melody? Yes. I've been meaning to check out Hidden Cameras for a while) is really nice, too. Very sweet. Will be investigating. And I LOVE Spanish guitar and tap. My favourite part of Mask of Zorro is James Horner's soundtrack. And a song about death is always fun. Unless it's not. Which frequently is the case. This one's an exception, like the Unicorns. Great close to the podcast, a bunch of songs I really like.
Thank goodness I got through this, there is a lot I have to investigate. Thanks Brian, stellar job.

Thanks for the review Deaner. However, i once again must defend jazz.
There is a difference between jazz and wanking guitar solos, ala Yngwie J. Malmsteen/Steve Vai. Jazz is about the interplay between musicians - about listening to those around you and working off of what they are putting down. Jazz cannot be played alone; it by definition needs others.
Wanking guitar solos are about showing off your skill, and having musicians simply back you up.
As for being bored by that sort of thing, i guess i could sort of understand it, but i feel the opposite. If i hear one more band doing something ripping off the Strokes or a kitschy 80s new wave rip off i think i'll vomit out of sheer boredom.
But really, thanks for the in depth review, i appreciate it.

Well, when I listen to the song in question, I hear the bassline just riffing in his key and the drummer doing something similar and eventually the sax as well. Perhaps the subtlety of it escapes me, I just don't see the interplay...

Wow, some digestion needed, Denis. I'll try again tomorrow. I actually didn't mind the first techno track too much. The only place I hear techno is usually in movies, and I felt like I was writing this webpage I was working on in a movie against the clock or something.

REVIEW - remig's podcast: Faves: Two Gallants, Malkmus, Garlic, Neil Young Least faves: SITS, Phoenix, Tahiti 80. Basically, the French stuff. And the Decemberists I've never made an effort to listen to all the new French indie-pop bands despite the general praise they get. Now I know why... There have been a couple of exceptions though, I like Mellow (haven't heard their latest album yet) and I enjoyed the first Phoenix album when the "French touch" was all the rage here. That said, I didn't like the French songs you put on your mix. The end of the Fugu track was ok, and the Hushpuppies song too. I hated Stuck in the Sound though (it's the voice) and didn't care at all for Tahiti 80. That said, the rest of the mix was enjoyable. I'm not into indie-pop but I don't hate it either and the mix was eclectic enough to make it interesting. So, in order: Wolfmother, Schmolfmother. At least The Darkness have a strong sense of humour. The Posies was good and My Morning Jacket too despite the singer being terribly out of tune (not that there's anything wrong about it). Two Gallants was my favorite song of the mix and I have to thank you again for making me discover them. Hal is solid (but the singer sounds like the Bee Gees), TVB is very nice, The Coral is OK, The Bees was another favorite as were Garlic and TFC. The Decemberists, definitely not my cup of tea. It's hard to make a good song with an accordion in it anyway and they failed IMO. The song Dean chose by them was better. Lastly, already knew and loved Malkmus and that Neil Young song.

My mix lacked info on the songs featured. I didn't want to speak in between the tracks cause it all flows so perfectly, haha. I suggest you to read this only after listening to the podcast.
* The intro background music is by French punk band Oberkampf. * Astral Apache is featured on the fabulous Galaxy 2 Galaxy compilation "Hi-Tech Jazz" released this year by Submerge. www.submerge.com * Free Kitten are Kim Gordon + Julia Cafritz + Yoshimi + Marc Ibold. From their 1992 album "Unboxed". * Plastic Face is from the Stinky Toys self-titled album from 1977. * Rectangle comes from Jacno's great self-titled mini-lp, released in 1979. Famous in France since it was used in a Nesquick commercial. * Love Yr Money is on UK band Daisy Chainsaw's first record "Eleventeen". * the Ken Ishii song comes from the remix album "Future In Light remixed". * Dick Johnson is on Pussy Galore's album "Dial 'M' For Motherfucker", which incidentally is the best album title EVER. * Ghetto Mom is a b-side from the She Said 7" ep. Also present on the "Controversial Negro" live album I think. * Vixens in Space is the opening track on "Horndog Fest" (In The Red, 1998) * Lightning Bolt cover a Guitar Wolf song on the tribute album "I Love Guitar Wolf... Very Much". * The song's called Tiefe Entspannung (Deep Relaxation if my poor German is correct), the band is Bodenständig 2000 and the album is called "Maxi German Rave Blast Hits 3" (second best album title ever), released on Rephlex. * You all recognized Somewhere from the West Side Story soundtrack, arranged by Velvet Cactus Society (also featured on my previous mix) * The Chakachas: apparently they were belgian. who would've known. * Pere Ubu: both tracks come from Ray Gun Suitcase. The only PU album I have by the way, although this should change quickly.

a little late again, but at last:
Brian’s podcast:
Seriously, Where's The Mozzarella?
Mark: 4,75 out of 5
I guess it’s the mix I’ve been enjoying the most so far. Really good things on it. The only songs I already knew are the ones by The Kinks, Mike Watt and The Evens (that fit perfectly with the rest of your mix). I loved almost all the songs, even the background tracks are great. So, thanks for this great mix Brian.
Modest Mouse - 3rd Planet I’m really impressed by this song. Didn’t knew that band at all. I like the voice dynamics and treatments and the guitars. It’s a hit. It’s the kind of songs that makes you wanna jump all around the room.
Br. Danielson - Our Givest Original voices and singing. I like this one too, very refreshing. Used to know a bit the Danielson Famile, but it confirms me that their music truly deserves a proper listen one of these days.
Loose Fur - Apostolic I really love Wilco and Jim O Rourke, then I’m happy to see that you’ve put a track of Loose Fur on your podcast. I never heard any Loose Fur song before, so thanks for that one. I like it. It makes me think a bit of early Tortoise and Gastr Del Sol records. Really interesting arrangements. Happy Apple - Paulie's Quick Temper Has Gotten Him Into a Few Jams Like I was saying in my review of Dean’s podcast, I’ve been a lot into jazz tunes recently. And I’m quite impressed by this song. Never heard of the band, but I like it lot. I love the instruments parts, especially the bass and the drums.
Man Man - Young Einstein on The Beach I must say it makes me think a bit of Patton’s stuffs like Mr Bungle (in a more indie-rock way) or his works with Kaada. I like it, but I prefer Patton’s voice and musical approach.
Man Man - Skin Tension Idem as above. But those two songs are still great (really great indeed). I like the guitar riff on this one, and the melancholy bringed by the voice, the chords and brass arrangements. Never heard of this band before.
Cracker - Duty Free I never really liked this band, but this song is great. I like the backing vocals: simple but effective. It’s a real grower. The arrangements and the general-country-rock feeling sound very FrankBlackesque IMO.
The Moping Swans - Shame Me No Further I don't know GBVand Robert Pollard very well, but I really love the albums I own. But this song does not really grow on me, I don’t know… it sounds like a b-side to me.
Mike Watt - Forever - One Reporter's Opinion This album is a masterpiece. I bought it when it out came out, because there was Frank Black and members of Nirvana and Sonic Youth on it. I wasn’t familiar with Mike Watt at that time. I instantly loved it. All the songs are great. This one is really good. I love the guitar parts too. And I love Pat Smear’s voice on it, really surprising. The lyrics are really funny too. I like the way it ends with the voice.
The Evens - Around the Corner I’m a big Fugazi fan, so when this album came out, I had to listen to it. It’s quite different from what Fugazi used to do, but it’s still original and interesting. Amy Farina has a really nice voice, and she has an way interesting to play the drums. What I also like about this song and their album is the use of the baritone guitar, and the way MacKaye’s sings (which is quite different too from what he used to do in Fugazi).
The Kinks - Victoria Another band of which I’m a big fan. I was talking the other day with The Holiday Son that it’s a shame people always speak of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones as the best and most influential bands of the 60’s and never seem to quote the Kinks, which is an error IMO. They are far better than the Stones IMO. About this particular song: it’s a hit. And Arthur’s album is I guess one of the most underrated Kinks albums with Muswell Hillbillies.
Ween - I Fell In Love Today I haven’t been listening to Shinola, Vol. 1., so thanks for this one. I like it. Is that song representative of the whole compilation?
Ween - Where'd The Cheese Go? (Original) Didn’t knew about that story with Pizza Hut!
Ween - Where'd The Cheese Go? (Urban) eh eh eh… Ween, like we like them!
Charles Mingus - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat Mingus is a genius. What else to say?
Half Handed Cloud - You've Been Faithful To Us Clouds Didn’t knew them at all. Original arrangements, voice and song structure. Interesting. Good song.
Belle and Sebastian - Funny Little Frog It’s the first song I hear from the last album, so thanks for this one too. Yeah I must admit it’s a really good song. Very 60’s sounding (makes me think a bit of the Zombies). It’s good to see that they are not repeating themselves with their last albums. Gonna have to add this one to my -long-list of albums to buy.
The Hidden Cameras - Boys of Melody Nice one, I like the arrangements, and the vocals melody. Very 60’s sounding too.
They Might Be Giants - Older (Original Version) It’s another band I’ll have to check out one of these days. Good choice to end your podcast.

Brian, I still don't know about Ween, but you definitely sold the Kinks to me. I can't get that song out of my head.

Sorry about the lack of reviews it's the lack of podcasts and the lack of internet that is to blame however, not I.

I've put in about 90 hours of work last week all told, but I'm hoping things will slow down after Wednesday. I haven't had time to listen/review podcasts much less check my email, but I'll get to it soon. I still have to edit up the FB.Net Podcast for today.
Meanwhile, I've not heard from whoever is next after Denis.
