Review: Denis' Podcast Favs: Free Kitten, Stinky Toys, Jacno, Daisy Chainsaw Least Favs: Astral Apache, Lightning Bolt Comments: First of all, your accent was very easy to understand, for me at least. Secondly, i don't HATE techno - i just can get a bit bored if the track goes overboard without much variation. The second techno track i dug a lot more than the first. You had a great block from Free Kitten-> Daisy Chainsaw of great songs in a row. You once said that our record collections must be very similar 'cept you have more techno and i have more jazz - i think you also would have more Jet Rock. I dug most of it, but then the Lightning Bolt track was long, noisy and boring to me. After that, the mix got really interesting again. I still think i prefer your #4 and #5 mixes more, but this one was a lot of fun and gave me a few new bands to check out.

Sure.
I realised, way too late, that I'd uploaded a mix with the wrong little monologue bits in it. Oh well. It's pretty embarrassing.
Also, the Cluster/Eno album is "After the Heat" (Not "After the Rain")

Here we go:
Denis’ podcast:
Denis’ Trauma Mix
Well, I guess your mix is the most heterogeneous one so far. Lots of things I wouldn’t listen too normally, but it was fun. There was no song that I already knew, and just a few bands I already heard of, then you made me discover lots of things. If it’s not the mix that I prefer, I guess it’s the one that made me laugh the most (in the good sense of the term).
Mark: 3 out of 5
Great intro! it’s Primus isn’t it before the marseillaise (the animal sounds)?
Astral Apache mmmm… what can I say? I don’t really like that kind of “techno”… Sorry Denis.
Free Kitten I just know the album called “Nice Ass” from Free Kitten. Funny song.
Stinky Toys - Plastic Face I heard some tracks by them, but I mainly know this band by name. I know Morrissey likes them a lot. Nice lead guitar, I like it. Elli Medeiros voice sounds a bit like a mix between Patti Smith and Mick Jagger on this song.
Jacno - Rectangle Another French artist that I mainly know by name. So thanks for putting a track of him and of the Stinky Toys on your podcast. I like the “cheap” keyboards sound and riff, and the general naïve “feeling” and melody of that song. I really like this one.
Daisy Chainsaw - Love Yr Money I only know this band too by name, and by the cover of their first album, which I often see used copies to sale in records stores. Then I was quite curious about that band. Funny song too.
Ken Ishii mmmm…. Same as thing as for Astral Apache, don’t really like that kind of stuff.
Pussy Galore - Dick Johnson Even if I like Jon Spencer a lot, I guess I only heard one or two Pussy Galore’s song before that one. So thanks again for putting one of their song on your podcast. I guess I prefer Jon Spencer. But it’s interesting to listen to what he did before.
Jon spencer Blues Explosion - Ghetto Mom Didn’t knew that song. That’s a good one! Much better than some of Plastic Fang’s tracks.
The Dirtbombs - Vixens in Space ouch… that’s what I call a dirty sound with dirty distortions…
Lightning Bolt …same as above… but hey… I guess I like it.
Bodenständig - Tiefe Entspannung I can’t deny it: I laughed a lot during this one. Denis… you’re a crazy guy.
Velvet Cactus Society - Somewhere Short but funny too.
The Chakachas eh eh eh, like this one… funny one too. “Cool sexy groove”.
Pere Ubu This is another band I don’t really know (just heard some old songs and the album St. Arkansas), but that I intend to. Makes me want to listen to more. The cover of Surfer Girl is really surprising.
What’s the little funny music at the end of the mix?

Soooo... who's next and why have I not heard from them. I don't think it's my job to chase people down for their podcasts, is it? Ideally you guys would get in touch with me and with your podcast at the beginning of the week so I'm not scrambling to get it up asap. Or do we all need a week off?

Shuffling it back a week would make an amazing difference for me at least. I've only been able to download up till Remigs podcast (review pending) and we still don't have internet at home so I haven't even made a start on mine. I'm not supposed to upload till June 2nd but could really do with the extra time. I think crispy is next according to the list.

Thanks Brian and cassandra. Yeah, that mix was kind of a joke, I made it at a time when I was very stressed and listened to a bunch of weird stuff, to relieve the tension. Anyway, song by song answers:
- The pig screams at the beginning and the Marseillaise are the same track. It's by Oberkampf (actually the only song of him I know). I briefly thought abouty adding more screaming pigs to my mix but I lacked ideas. - Don't know if you can hear the lyrics but the Free Kitten song is about a girl whose guilty pleasures is to listen to Pavement. hehe - did you remember the Nesquick commercial? The music was Jacno's "Rectangle". He covered his own song on a recent album, with AS Dragon as the backing band, and it's a nice version too, you should check it out.
quote:
Jon spencer Blues Explosion - Ghetto Mom Didn’t knew that song. That’s a good one! Much better than some of Plastic Fang’s tracks.
Well I'm one of the few who do enjoy Plastic Fang a lot (and the cover of the 12" LP is fantastic!). But yeah, Ghetto Mom is even better.
quote:
Bodenständig - Tiefe Entspannung I can’t deny it: I laughed a lot during this one. Denis… you’re a crazy guy.
I wish I knew what the guys talk about in the song. Apparently Tiefe Entspannung means "Deep Relaxation".
quote:
The Chakachas eh eh eh, like this one… funny one too. “Cool sexy groove”.
My friends and I call such songs "Bonjour Madame". "Love To Love You Baby" is another Bonjour Madame, for instance.
quote:
What’s the little funny music at the end of the mix?
It's the great closing theme from the SpongeBob Squarepants cartoon series. I always put my TV at full volume when the show ends.

Review - Broken Face: Faves: Kinks, Cracker, Mingus, Loose Fur Least faves: B&S, Man Man Best mix so far (but Scott's tracklisting is quite impressive and it may well win the title). Listening to the whole thing took me ages though, first because it's quite long, secondly because I have a shitload of work at the moment, thirdly because I first downloaded the file that was cut at the middle and couldn't listen to the other half until a week later. Plus I have to concentrate on the spoken parts to make out what you're saying, which means I need silence and free time to hear the podcast in good conditions. So, a couple of stuff I already had (Danielson obviously, Mike Watt, Ciccone Youth...) and a bunch of great songs, my fave being (as said before) the Kinks. I was completely hooked, and now (you'll probably hate this comparison) I feel like if the Beatles had recorded a dozen more albums I didn't know about. Really, it's a great song. Taking the songs in order now... I thought I'd love Modest Mouse when I heard their song on the Crime+Punishment soundtrack, but it seems every new song I hear by them sounds more or less the same and I'm losing interest. Not a bad song but I don't feel like going further. Danielson, great as always (still don't have the new album btw). Loose Fur was very enjoyable; the voice sounds a lot like Lou Reed. I know you worship the Bad Plus, but you haven't won me over yet; the Happy Apple track was OK but it's not exactly the kind of jazz I like. Man Man was probably my least fave on the mix, the first song being very annoying and the second one trying too hard to sound like Tom Waits IMO (mind you, I don't know anything about Tom Waits). Cracker was excellent especially the background vocals and the line that says "I love Frank and I love all his songs" :). Pollard, not the best song I've heard by him but I like what he does a lot. About Ween... sorry, not a complete success! It's a very good song nonetheless, although I preferred Happy Coloured Marbles from Dean's mix. One day I'm sure I'll buy me a Ween record but for now I can't say you've turned me into a fan. I do enjoy their songs though. Always been a Mingus fan and that tune is quite amazing indeed. The last 4 songs kinf of fell apart, but maybe it's because I listened too much to the shortened file that ended right after the Ween tracks. I never cared for Belle & Sebastian, and (sorry everyone!) nothing I've heard from TMBG has blown me away. Reading my coments again I don't look very enthusiastic, but I did enjoy your mix a lot. There are a couple of bands that go straight to my wishlist. Thanks for the great music.
Denis

Well, I've gone through Denis' podcast a few times, here's the review...
First of all, I found your apologies humorous and unnecessary. Of course you don't need to apologize for your taste in music, but, to get it out in the open now, I didn't really like a lot of the stuff. I appreciate you sharing what you like, and that's cool, just largely wasn't where I'm at. But before I go on about the music, I wish you'd talked more, I enjoyed your chatter and it would help me know what songs are where.
Which, partly, is why I've taken so long to do this, but here we are. The very first track was actually enjoyable, I can't see myself listening to it, but it was nice background for at work. The second song, on the other hand, was probably my least favourite on the track. The drums felt off and there was nothing melodic to be found. The third, my favourite. I love 'oohs' in songs, don't know why. The vocals weren't always up there for me, but mostly okay and the guitar was very Joeyish. I found the next one dull but nothing really wrong with it per se, and the one after fun but with vocals that annoyed. Tracks 6/7 again, just not my thing, I was getting groggy listening and had to procure some caffeine. Track 8, Ghetto Mom (?), was good clean fun rock. Vies for favourite with track three. And finally, the last four songs, I'm really sorry, they just didn't grab me. The drums in number 9 were cool but not interesting in a way that I enjoy, Track 11 was okay, though I wish she'd just sneeze and get it over with. :) It sounds sort of familiar to me, though... And the Pere Ubu I was looking forward to, thanks for putting it on. I'd been meaning to check them out. Unfortunately, I discovered I didn't care for it.
I'm sorry that's a negative review, there were elements I enjoyed and I'm glad you tried to show something different, it just wasn't for me I'm afraid. But I'm pretty set in what I like. :)

Hahaha, I don't even know. The one with the tribal drums is number nine, I thought. 11 was the one with the sex moans.

The tracklist is as follows: 0) 00:00 Intro 1) 02:45 Underground Resistance - Astral Apache 2) 08:00 Free Kitten - Guilty Pleasures 3) 10:40 Stinky Toys - Plastic Face 4) 13:25 Jacno - Rectangle 5) 17:00 Daisy Chainsaw - Love Your Money 6) 19:38 Ken Ishii - Future is what we are [Ken Ishi deadly striker mix] 7) 25:44 Pussy Galore - Dick Johnson 8) 28:01 Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Ghetto Mom 9) 31:08 Dirtbombs - Vixens In Space 10) 33:19 Lightning Bolt - Planet of the Wolves (Guitar Wolf cover) 11) 38:52 Bodenständig 2000 - Tiefe Entspannung (Deep Relaxation) 12) 42:14 Velvet Cactus Society - Somewhere 13) 43:00 Chakachas - Jungle Fever 14) 47:19 Pere Ubu - Turquoise Fins 15) 50:23 Pere Ubu - Surfer Girl 16) 52:35 SpongeBob SquarePants - Closing theme
It's OK if you didn't like the mix, I expected that (or maybe you're just being mean because I slayed yours, haha, ha). I can't say it reflects my musical taste, it's just the loud part of it. I'll try to send you the mix I made for the previous swap, you'd probably enjoy it a lot more (there's a jazz track on it though). About the fact that I don't talk during the mix, really, you can't imagine how hard it was to record the 2 minutes of introduction. Took me the whole afternoon. I'm really not that fluent in english. Plus I always work a lot on having a mix that flows well, and I didn't feel like ruining the segues with some talkative bits. Sooo, I've only had 3 reviews I think (k, remig, scott and steve, where are you?), but I'm extremely surprised that only cassandra cared for Pere Ubu. The last part of the mix was supposed to be the pinacle of it all, the 10 minutes everyone agrees on. What's not to like about these 2 Pere Ubu songs? Who knows but I absolutely love them. Strange how things turn out in the cd swaps.

OBW Review:
Favs: Arthur Russell - Deer in the Forest, Arthur Russell - Hiding Your Present From You, Laurie Spiegel - Appalachian Grove, Cluster & Brian Eno - Foreign Affairs Least Favs: Harmonia - Deluxe (Immer Wieder) (i still liked this track, but i had to pick at least one 'least fav') Comments: Wow. As someone who owns very little electronic music, i really enjoyed and appreciated this podcast. I think an inherant problem for me w/ electronic music is that i can only listen to so much of it before it starts to run together in my brain. So, the first few tracks are my favorites, mainly because they stand out the most to me - by the end i was having a hard time keeping track of the differences between tracks ('cept for "Autobahn" of course). Even though i may have had a hard time distinguishing tracks, i enjoyed every single one of them. Good job Scott.

I have to say I feel the same as Brian. Really appreciate having something I'd _never_ seek out on my own, and some of it is enjoyable, but I find the songs tend to go a little/a lot long and I just don't have the patience. I would probably enjoy them more mixed with some other music, but I'm trying to pay enough attention to review properly. Plus I have to go back and fix my review of Denis'.

Ok, my individual tracks are up on the ftp, along with tracklist and art. I'm having some technical problems with the podcast (aka my computer is shit) which means I've not quite finished that yet. Hopefully be done later today assuming my PC can cope with the load....which it couldn't previously. Audacity just seems to eat up my RAM meaning it keeps crashing. Dean, I'll email you when the podcast is on the ftp....I assume you want me to upload it there. Hope you enjoy it. :)

Ok, thanks Dean, should be there in about half an hour. Due to my aforementioned technical problems I've had to miss out some track introductions and stuff.....Audacity kept crashing and couldn't be fixed. I think the way to do it may have been to mix it down to mp3 in three parts, then join those mp3's. Sadly, I don't have time to redo it.
Erm, I think my voice drops a bit on occasion as well, mainly due to me holding the mike. Professionalism at it's peak.
Hope you all enjoy it and can understand what there is of my voice.
