Well, the first listening, not much jumped out at me, so when i first listened i thought "i know i have to listen to this at least 2 more times before i review it, but i really don't want to." So, it was a nice surpirse that on subsequent listens, it was enjoyable.

Dean has my podcast, so if its not up now, it should be. I attempted to upload the tracks to the FTP last night, but my connection is for shit, so that might have to wait if it didn't take properly.

and for all interested, tracklist/notes can be found at:

It damn well better not have. I plan on catching up over the next two days if I can; odds are I'll submit a big cluster of reviews and then another and so on until we're done.

Also, I don't have the time right now to teach myself about such things, so if someone could recommend a simple, self-explanatory tool for FTP business it would be much appreciated.

Rémi's podcast. My favourite so far, I think, so I'm not going to slate it as much as Dean's (har har). Not everything was great, but there were a few things that caught my ear, so I'll just type up the notes as I made them whilst I was listening to it (while packing my life in boxes: my life is in storage, folks).

Wolfmother - cool like Kyuss
track #3 good
#5 like the Replacements? Can't hardly wait.
Tahiti 80 is cute
m/f harmony on v. pretty - sounds kinda like Tanya D.
Neil Young then the Coral epitomises the expression "sublime to the ridiculous" but I kind of like the coral song.

Good job Monsieur G.

OK, I had used an old feed with the extended characters from Remi's podcast so I could easily swap the new feed for the old while I was away and didn't realize. Feed is fixed.

Remi's podcast

The songs were a nice mix of stuff I hadn't heard of and stuff I knew already and liked.
Harvest is one of my beloved albums of all time, so it was super special to see Needle on here.

The podcast's first song initially had me wanting to blast Zep, but instead it led me straight to the eponymous Wolfmother album - 11 more power-rock songs where Woman came from. Thanks, Remi, for opening my eyes and ears to yet another cool thing from Australia.

Question: Can Malkmus do any wrong?

I think we all know the answer.

Remi, what's with the electronic voice? It would have been far groovier to hear you!

Brian's podcast

Oh, we know where the mozzarella is.

You have officially made me a Modest Mouse fan.

Thanks for all the notes and tidbits. I'm a sucker for info ephemera. Thanks also for the Jersey flavor, I especially liked (and knew nothing about) Brother Danielson. Speaking of Jersey, I heard all kinds of echoes of The Feelies on Apostolic. (I knew nothing about the side project Loose Fur so thanks for that.)

Your podcast included one of my favorite Cracker songs, ditto Kinks, but as always you managed to open up my musical horizons, Brian. Man Man -- wow, yeah, you are right when you say that their sound varies. Those two songs could not sound more different, and I enjoyed both.

Johnny hates jazz and so does yours truly, so I couldn't get into HA. But I didn't have to suffer through Mingus (sorry, I'm uncouth when it comes to jazz, have never managed to appreciate it) because the podcast I dl-ed cuts out at about 50 minutes. Why is that?

P.S. You are my hilarious friend.

For now, the gates are closed to this particular swap, but I'm hoping to continue a community podcast (see the FB.Net Salon->I Heard Ramona Sing forum for details). You'd be welcome to jump in on that. And of course, you can always listen to/comment on the podcasts even if you're not part of this particular swap.

Welcome aboard.

Remig's Review

I'm familiar with a few songs on this mix.....Malkmus, Neil Young and The Coral, the first two of which are great, well, jojo's jacket is a fantastic song and just makes we want to dance around.
I quite like the overall feel, it starts off a bit heavier and then gets almost summery in the middle, and then maybe a bit more rocky again.
Wolfmother just want to be Zep, and SITS remind me of Queen (well the vocalist does). Both are OK tracks, but sit uneasily with the comparison. Two Gallants is growing on me.
I think it's almost impossible to be unaffected by the Tahiti 80 track, I just want to tap my foot and it makes me a little bit happier.

Faves: Hushpuppies, Tahiti 80, Troy von Balthazar
Hates: Le Tenia, Phoenix (and maybe HAL)
Growers: Two Gallants, The Coral, The Decemberists

Actually, I was slightly disappointed with the Decemberists and Fanclub, I thought both would be better.

Enjoyed it though Remig, ta.

[edit] Haha, didn't see Brian's cattleprod post. Dean's to come soon......

Thanks Llama,
yes, I wanted to start heavy then light with pop songs and end with indie rock.
Even if this Decemberist song is quite representative of their music it's from their first album, which isn't their best. It's the kind of band you have to listen on a full CD, and not randomly. The same for Fanclub.

Kathryn, thanks too. I haven't got a microphone so it was the only way to have words on my podcast.

I'm quite happy that people enjoy french bands. don't miss Tahiti 80 live, they're touring UK in may: http://www.myspace.com/tahiti80

Remig. Super mix. I was just wondering. Le Tenia, did they get their name from Irreversible(That nasty film)?

All the mixes so far were excellent and I'm really looking forward to hearing what Llama and Cassandra does with their mixes.

Dean's mix

-

Nice mix. Good host.

Quite like Beulah. I haven't really given anything but "When Your Heartstrings Break" a chance.

I had never heard the Kaiser Chefs before. I like the track well enough. Agree with what has been said, though. Won't pursue anything of theirs.

Andrew Bird is also new to me. Reminds me very much of John Cale.

-

Andrew Bird is going on a wish list.

Dean did an excellent job crafting an interesting/entertaining podcast. (He's had practice! No fair!)

I look forward to his FB.net community showcase podcast.

I'm still absorbing Remi's, don't like to review before it's been spun through a few times. Should have something up soon though. Speaking of soon, whoever is doing the next podcast give me a shout.

Thanks for the review, Obf. Will look into this John Cale character.

REVIEW - kathryn's mix (better late than never, uh?):
I like the idea of a mix that I can listen to on repeat, cause it's only stuff I like. So not much novelty in it but a great selection. I have Warm Jets and My Life ITBOG already and love them both. The Tiger Mountain tracks were new to me, but all Eno records are on my to-buy list anyway, these tracks were as good as everything I know by him. Finally I don't know Byrne's solo stuff (I only have the TH's first 4 records by the way) and both songs from the Catherine Wheel sounded good to great. These last few years I've been slowly discovering the great records from the 80's and this mix fits nicely in this objective.

Coming up next, my review of Dean's mix.

Oh, and I'm supposed to submit my podcast next (on Friday). Well unfortunately I lacked time to do it properly so it won't be a podcast, just an unmixed selection of songs. I wish I could at least add a vocal introduction to my selection but I doubt I'll have time to do it. Sorry in advance.

alright, here it goes:

Rémi’s podcast

Mark: 3,5 out of 5

Great introduction! Especially now that I know what it is. I like it with the robotic voice.

Your mix is homogeneous and regular. I knew some songs on it (like Neil young, The Posies, Wolfmother, Troy Von Balthazar, Stephen Malkmus …) and I knew some bands by other songs, but I didn’t knew the Two Gallants or My Morning Jacket and I liked it. There’s also some songs and some bands that I don’t like or that I don’t get into, but it was still good to hear those ones.

Wolfmother - Woman
I guess it’s the only song I know from them. Entertaining song, but it reminds me too much of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath, and I’d rather listen to these bands. But the song is funny. The singer has a voice very similar to Jack White’s one.

Hushpuppies – 1975
I only knew that band by name. Entertaining song again, but… just entertaining IMO.

Stuck In The Sound– Toy Boy
I like this one. The general dynamic of the song, the guitars, and the singer’s voice. Even if it sounds a lot like Franz Ferdinand and Interpol. But the song is really good. Are they good live? Surely one of the best CQFD songs of all times.

The Posies– Flavor Of The Month
I really love that band and I love that album. But I haven’t heard the last album or the album with Big Star, have you Rémi? Like the Teenage Fanclub, they’ve succeeded in writing perfect pop songs. They’re the Big Star of the 90’s. Highly underrated bands.
When did you saw them live? Were they good?

My Morning Jacket- Anytime
I like this one. Where are they from? I like the voice and the moog melodies on the verse. The chorus is good too with the backing vocals. Will have to check it out soon.

The Two Gallants – Long Summer Day
Good one too. I like the voice –great singer, and the guitar and drum parts are great. Really original song and sound. There’s no bass player in that band? Very refreshing! Where are they from?

Fugu – A Bigger Splash
Don’t really like the voice (bad English accent). I don’t get into it. But the chorus is nice, sounds a bit like an old Beach Boy song.

Phoenix – Long Distance Call
I know the first albums of that band. They are entertaining. I saw them live once some years ago. They were good. They have some good songs. But I won’t buy they records. I’m just not very fond of them. But I must admit this new song is really good.

Tahiti 80 (Fosbury) – Matter OF Time
Don’t really like it. Too much “entertaining” for me. Never really liked that band.

HAL – Worry About The Wind
Never heard of them. Is their name has something to do with 2001: A Space Odyssey’s robot?
Entertaining.

Troy Von Balthazar - Perfect
I like it, I like that album and I love that man. He’s such a great singer and songwriter. I saw him live once with Chokebore and once alone last winter, it was huge both times. He’s great. I’ll put some Chokebore songs in my mix. Highly underrated band and artist. The girl singing with him has a nice voice (and she’s really pretty too…).

Neil Young – The Needle And The Damage Done
Great song, huge album, huge artist. What else to say? The lyrics are great too. I know a lot of Neil Young fans don’t really like that album, because it’s usually the only that know people who are not familiar with Neil Young, but I like it a lot.

The Coral – Pass It On
I’ve never really liked that band. I don’t know why. Although they have some good songs. This one is nice, but… I don’t get into it. I guess there’s also something I don’t like in the voice.

The Decemberists - The Legionnaire’s Lament
Thanks for putting this one in your mix. I was looking forward to hear some more Decembrists songs. This one’s good. Which album would you recommend me? I like the “feeling” of that song. I also like the use of the accordion.

The Bees – Wash In The Rain
I only knew them by name. Nice song. I like the simple piano gimmick and the vocals crescendo.

Stephen Malkmus – Jojo’s Jacket
This song is a little masterpiece just like every Pavement albums. The video of this one is awesome too (just like every Malkmus videos). This man is a genius.

Garlic – Slave To The Summer, Son
It’s funny because this one sounds a LOT like a Pavement song, even in the singing. Maybe too much. Although the song is good.

Teenage Fanclub – Can’t Feel My Soul
I love that band too, like I already said but I don’t really know that album. That song is good, especially the guitars on the chorus. Thanks again for putting that one in your mix.

Jean Luc Le Ténia - Picots
eh eh eh… vive Jean Luc Le Ténia! This guy should be a star! I didn’t knew that one but it’s a great one!

The Posies– Flavor Of The Month

I haven't heard their last records. I saw in summer 2005 I guess, they were really good. spitting and sweating.

My Morning Jacket- Anytime

USA. listen to their last album wich I think is a masterpiece.

The Two Gallants – Long Summer Day
There’s no bass player in that band? Very refreshing! Where are they from?

San Francisco I believe. No bass, he's playing in picking.

Fugu – A Bigger Splash
Tahiti 80 (Fosbury) – Matter OF Time

It seems you're not in fresh pop music that much.
You're wrong

HAL – Worry About The Wind

I guess.

(and she’s really pretty too…).

Sure!!!!

The Decemberists - The Legionnaire’s Lament
Which album would you recommend me?

The last one, Picaresque, is a good start, even if this one is from their first CD (they've got 3 LP and 2 excellent EP).

REVIEW - Dean's podcast:

Faves: Ween - Happy Coloured Marbles, Arcade Fire, Old Souls, Greenfield Main
Least faves: Kaiser Chiefs, Grim Fandango, Run Chico Run
I only knew one song from the selection (Arcade Fire, which kathryn had already put on one of her mixes) and the rest were mainly names I had heard of, without having actually listened to their music. So the tracklist was, let's say, "informative". Unfortunately... well, that's not really the kind of music I feel like listening to now. Without sounding as harsh as Simon (cause I did enjoy your mix all in all), I kinda sort of agree with his remarks (although I didn't understand most of it). I'm not into pretty indie-pop stuff in general (there are a few exceptions though).
So, on the down side: Beulah was, yeah, a bit boring. The videogame soundtrack was derivative and I didn't get what was so special about it. It probably happens everytime you listen to a soundtrack without knowing the original movie it comes from. Plus I hate videogames. I forgot the Run Chico Run song 2 seconds after listening to it, which is never a good thing.
Now Kaiser Chiefs... well I hold this band in very low esteem since one day I heard "Oh My God", which I consider as the worst song ever written since the Oasis heydays. Then the other day I listened to your podcast without having the tracklisting in front of me and I didn't know it was KC playing, and I thought "hey, that reminds me a bit of XTC" (I'm not familiar at all with xtc, it's just that I bought Drums & Wires last week). And that's what I hate about new bands, when you realize that 25 years before bands played the same music, only better. And now that damn song is stuck in my head and I hate you, Dean, hate you. Damn!
Alright, not really. It's just a catchy song that I have to hate because I decided I hated Kaiser Chiefs.
One the good side: I still haven't bought anything by Arcade Fire but I like all the songs I've heard by them. I don't know Ween at all (except Buenas Tardes Amigo) and the first song was excellent and makes me want to check them out. The 2nd one, not as great but still ok. The Old Souls were very good too, and the AC Newman could've been really great if it lasted 2 minutes less. It kinds of drags on and on. Frank Black would've stopped the song at 2 minutes!
To sum up, the mix was nicely done and it's, uh, nice to listen to while doing something else, but it wasn't really the stuff I was looking for. Ween goes to my wishlist though (AF was already there).
