Yeah, I'm not sure about Audacity's RAM usage. Assuming you're using XP, how much RAM do you have?
Best I could offer is make sure you're not running any nonessential programs. I.E. only your antivirus and Audacity open.
As for voice dropping, compression's the way to fix that. I think Audacity has some built in stuff for that, but I use CoolEdit, so not sure... I'm sure your podcast will be fine. Will put it up tonight.

I have 768MB RAM, and shut down all non-essential programs (even disconnected from web and stopped AV). Even when there was over 500MB RAM free, towards the end of the process, listening to the takes ate all that up, meaning it just all crashed. Pretty frustrating.
I'll try and put up an info page like Brian did or put some more info on a Word doc on the ftp.
Pain is temporary, quitting is forever.

Yeah, that's pretty strange, obviously there's something wrong with the software...
Just make sure you email me a title, description, etc (I outlined this back a few pages) and I'll be ready to roll tonight...

Hyopthetically speaking - can you still get ProTools Free? I might use that if so.

Yes, hypothetically. :)
Might be overkill for something like this, but could be used for other things I suppose.

Plus, it's ProTools. I could quantise my voice, or fiddle with the pitchbender thing. Hours of fun.

True. I look forward and fear the results.
PS Sorry, no time yesterday for putting up the podcast. Tonight, though, although I also have to finish up the FB.Net one... maybe I should just wait 'til Friday so we're on schedule again? Who's next after? Are you going to be ready to go for next week?

well:
Scott’s podcast:
Dull, Painfully Dull. I Like It!
Mark: 4,25 out of 5
First of all, I wanted to say that I had some problems with playing your podcast (the speed was too slow, and I haven’t been able to fix it), then I played the songs that were in the folder on the FTP. I really liked your mix because it’s the kind of electronic music that I like, and that I’m looking for (even if I also like other forms and genres of electro). There are a lot of bands or artists that I didn’t knew in your mix, so it was really great to discover all this. I will surely check out some of them, so thanks a lot.
Arthur Russell - Deer in the Forest Never heard of that artist. mmm interesting song, I like the crazy organ, and the general atmosphere of the song.
Arthur Russell - Hiding Your Present From You I like this one too. More than the previous one in fact. I like the guitar effects (but is this a guitar?), and all the little noises and beatings. Nice work. Maybe the voice is too approximate, but the words are nice.
Laurie Spiegel - Appalachian Grove I like that kind of keyboard stereophonic echoes. Very minimalist but I like it. Really interesting crescendo too. Never heard of her before.
David Berman - On the Other Ocean Like it too. What I particularly like is the different layers of keyboards. Subtle piece. Minimalist again, but that’s the kind of thing I like.
Harmonia - Deluxe (Immer Wieder) Thanks a lot, that song is brilliant, makes me wanna listen to more. I especially like the harmonies at the beginning and at the end of the track (the melody reminds of something, but I can’t remember what).
Cluster & Brian Eno - Foreign Affairs I knew the Cluster & Eno collaboration by name, but never heard a single note before that. Really good too. The combination of traditional instruments (bass, piano) with the keyboards and the electronic stuff is well done.
Tangerine Dream - Stratosfear I only knew Rubycon from Tangerine Dream, that a friend of mine lent me some years ago. And that’s a band I wanted to check again soon. This song is quite different from what I can remember of that album. But I like it.
Kraftwerk - Autobahn I must admit I hardly prefer the long version, but I can understand that 22 minutes would be a bit long for a single podcast… I guess it’s the first time I hear that short version of the song. That album and this band are so great and incredible! The mould of all modern electronic music.
Delia Gozalez & Gavin Russom - Black Spring Never heard of them too, but it’s a great track. I like the hypnotic rhythms and the little melodies gathered together, the subtle little changes and variations, and the little lulls in the middle and in the second half of the track.
Throbbing Gristle - Walkabout This is another band that I like, and that I used to listen to a lot two years ago. I like this one, although it’s a “classic” one.
Manuel Gottsching - E2-E4 Too bad it’s downsized, I guess I wanted a little more...
Tonto's Expanding Head Band - Tontomotion Good one too (and quite funny). I love Moogs so much…
Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co. - Ceres Motion Good progression. Nice interactions between the different keyboards and loops.
Ashra - Kazoo The loop is really good, and the soft-slow drum rhythm with the keyboard playing the discreet melodies is a really good idea. Sounds like Mogwai with keyboards!
Hans Joachim Roedelius - Wenn der Sudwind Weht Nice one to end your mix. Feels like dreaming, or swimming under water…

…and:
Steve’s mix
Mobustrip
Mark: 3,5 out of 5
Another time, there was a lot of bands that I didn’t knew or never heard of before. And it’s always good to discover new things, even if you (I) don’t always like them all. What’s strange about your podcast and your mix is the fact that it’s diverse but very coherent at the same time, which is a really good thing IMO. From the things I didn’t knew at all (or just by name), I guess that my favourite ones are in the second half of the mix: The Mendoza Line, Magenta Lane, The Black-Eyed Snakes, Rasputina, and Bat For Lashes. And from the things I knew: NIN, Bis (and Fields Of The Nephilim and the sisters Of Mercy songs are quite good too).
Nine Inch Nails - Sin I’m a big NIN fan, then I like that song a lot. Although my favourite album is The Downward Spiral, Pretty Hate Machine is a great debut album, especially when you know how Trent made it (and of course because the songs are great too). You can hear a lot of Depeche Mode influences on that particular album, although the production is sometimes rough (but that’s a also what makes it appealing).
Vitalic - My Friend Dario mmm funny one. I knew this guy-band by name (he’s French isn’t he?), but I was not sure to like it. But I guess I like this track. (and it’s a great transition with NIN’s Sin).
Bis - Theme From Tokyo I only know Bis’ first album (and their cover of The Smiths). And I must say it’s quite different from what I knew from them, but surprisingly good! Very refreshing. Yeah, I like it.
Devotchka - Such a Lovely Thing Not the kind of music I normally listen to, but it’s fine, I like it too. Where are they from?
Hot Club of Cowtown - Crazy 'Cause I Love You That’s another funny one. Made me smile and stomp my feet.
Rachel Griffin - don't You Reminds me a bit of Elysian Fields and someone else I can’t put a name on. I’m not really fond of that: I mean, it’s pleasant to listen to, but I don’t really like the voice and the way she sings, and the music (the kind of thing I don’t like in solo-piano-singer-jazz thing).
Maria McKee - This Property is Condemned Didn’t knew her. Interesting voice (but I’m not sure I like it), the song is good, but I guess I don’t like the production (especially on the chorus).
Nickel Creek - Spit on a Stranger Interesting cover, I like the choirs, and the progression of the arrangements and of the song. Made me wanna listen to the original (it’s been a long time I haven’t listened to that Pavement album).
The Mendoza Line - It's a Long Line (but it...) Didn’t knew about them too. I really like this one. Simple but efficient. Very refreshing too. I like the use of the keyboard on that one.
Magenta Lane - Follow Me Interesting voice again. Good dynamic. I like the drum parts and the guitars.
The Black-Eyed Snakes - Rise Up! Eh, I really like that one! Good production (I like the distortions and the basic-dirty sounding). I like the intro and the break too.
Fields of the Nephilim - Preacher Man Fields Of The Nephilim aren’t really my cup of tea. But I don’t mind listening to a couple of songs once in a while (in a disrespectful and ironic way, I must confess…). I’d rather prefer bands like The Cure or Bauhaus (bands that I’m really fond of) or even Alien Sex Friend. But Preacher Man is a good one, I must admit it.
Rasputina - Doomsday Averted I really like that song (I only knew that band by name too). The production is great. The voice is beautifully strange and the singing fits perfectly. Arrangements and instrumentation are perfect. Thanks a lot for that one.
Sisters of Mercy - Emmaline I’ve never been really fond of the Sisters Of Mercy, except some songs from the first album and Floodland. But like for the Fields of the Nephilim, that’s a good one, I confess. On which album is it?
Bat For Lashes - Sad Eyes Reminds me a lot of Cat Power musically. Nice song. Never heard of them too. The end with the choirs is nice.
Nice little song to end the podcast too…

Shouldn't think anyone would mind.
Cassandra, thanks for the very fast review!
Devotchka are from Denver - http://www.myspace.com/devotchkamusic
Rachel Griffin, that's the only track of hers I have......I love it, though I think it's about 2 minutes too long.
Maria McKee has the best voice on earth and you will all come to realise this! ;) Sisters of Mercy - Emmaline is a live track...it's not on an album....not even any compilations I think, and don' think it's on any of their 12" either. Bat for Lashes sounds just like Cat Power to me too
Bis - I wanted to put half the tracks off the album (Social Dancing) on this, but Theme from Tokyo fit best with the mix. It's mostly hi energy dance/pop/indie.

Well, the track's total length is 2 1/2 hours, so I felt it would be best to trim it down a bit.
It really doesn't offer much variation from what I presented, either. Some interesting sections, but mostly just those percussion loops and some strumming on an acoustic guitar.
Kinda like a pleasant Metal Machine Music. Not very listenable in it's entirety.

Review: Llamadance
Favs: Hot Club of Cowtown - Crazy 'Cause I Love You, The Mendoza Line - It's a Long Line (but it...), Magenta Lane - Follow Me Least Favs: Devotchka - Such a Lovely Thing, Fields of the Nephilim - Preacher Man, Maria McKee - This Property is Condemned, Sisters of Mercy – Emmaline Comments: This mix was a lot of fun - a good cross section of genres. What is funny is that my opinion on a few tracks totally flipped after multiple listens. Case in point is the Devotchka song - on first listen i really dug it, but past the 2nd-4th listens the voice was realy starting to grate on my nerves and it just goes on and on (and on). Similarly, the Magenta Lane track grew on me more and more with each subsequent listen. The Rachel Griffin track reminded me very much of a local musician i go see sometimes named Heather Christian, 'cept Heather has a great rhythm section play with her. The Pavement cover reinforces two things i feel about many artists: 1) that bands typically have better musical taste than many of their fans (i find that Nickel Creek's fans border on obnoxious) and 2) that in general, bands cover songs without really thinking how to change them. This was only marginally different than the Pavement version. My big complaint with the Sisters of Mercy and Fields of the... tracks are how dated, 80s they sound. Fields especially, with the really tinny hi-hat sound brought back images of 1989 in my head. However, i loved the Hot Club track, and the Mendoza Line not only wins my approval because of their fantastic name (a sly baseball reference) but also their super catchy song. The NIN brought back happy high school memories, as did the Bis. Rasputina was very interesting, and that final little track brought a smile to my face. All in all, very enjoyable.

Scott/OBW
Finally done listening. Um, I can see what you're doing here - calling it Painfully Dull to try and draw sympathy and get a better response. Hehe. However.
Many a time I've tried to sit down and listen to Philip Glass, or Steve Reich, or whoever and it just doesn't do anything for me. I appreciate the subtleties, and in some ways I can see the appeal, but it doesn't move me, unfortunately. I'm grateful for the opportunity to expand my knowledge of this sort of thing: as I say, my current knowledge doesn't stretch much past Glass/Reich/Riley et al, and I wasn't familiar with Arthur Russell at all, and have never heard Tangerine Dream. But I can safely say I won't be following it up with any purchases. Sorry.

Hey now, I don't think it was so bad that I needed to draw on sympathy for semi-positive remarks.
I figured most folks who like FB/Pixies would like stuff in that same vein and find my mix dull.

Heh, it wasn't bad, just wasn't to my taste. I've been approaching these things trying to like them, and there were bits I definitely enjoyed on there (I can't remember the band names though - most of the time I was listening on the tube, and it's difficult to hear your voice!).
