Oh, good point. I really don't know. I usually post mp3s as yousendit links, so I can do that if you prefer?

If you'd like to share it on your blog and you anticipate a lot of people downloading, then you could just host the file through yousendit and we'll host the podcast separately. I don't know how many people follow Betty. If there aren't going to be many, probably there'll only be a few extra d'ls. Whichever way you'd like is fine. I can't podcast from a yousendit file, however.

Nope, that's fine. Didn't get home last night 'til almost 3 AM, so I had no time to put these up, but I hope to this weekend. Just have to watch the shop while my parents are out.

Sorry, as I pointed out elsewhere but not here my hard drive crashed on Friday and I spent much of the weekend getting operational again. I am now wholly consumed by Episode 10 of the FB.Net Podcast, but I will put up Cassandra's today anyway and try for yours on Friday.

OK, back to reviewing...
Obfuscate's Painfully Dull Podcast Well, I'm going to say that the one-two combination of this podcast and Denis' really stopped me in my tracks as far as keeping up with these reviews goes. I just found both of them very difficult to listen to and get into for long periods of time. I guess I can't appreciate what draws people to this type of music; I'm not saying they should be but rather that I don't "get it". I do, however, appreciate them sharing and attempting to showcase something that might expand horizons of more intelligent people. So thanks, guys.
Now, on to the podcast...
Arthur Russell's Deer in the Forest opens up the podcast and sets the mood. It is an interesting song and I think would be tremedously served with an overarcing melody. There's a lot of stuff going on though, and I suppose the (english?) horn serves that purpose anyway. It is nice that it is short and sweet, contrary to the bulk of the songs in this podcast which you will hear me bemoan. The second song, Hiding Your Present From You, for example, I found quite dull and, according to notes I made some time ago, had "nothing going on for a loooong time". Chop the first few minutes, before the rhythms change, into maybe 8 bars and we'll talk.
Next was Laurie Spiegel's Appalachian Groove, which doubtless was a difficult song to make with a very weird/interesting pattern. Impressive for a first go and I appreciated your narration. I liked the way the pattern shifts over time. Then, David Bermen's On the Ocean, which sounds like an electronic orchestra warming up. Neat, but still warming up. The synth/real combination is a nice contrast and a very interesting story/background which makes it interesting to listen to. But, as always, too long to hold that initial interest.
Hermonia's Iamur Warder had a little more rhythm than the last piece, which was quite welcome. I have "Lemonita of the H2O?" written on my paper and no idea why. Maybe that's the title of the next song. I have "cool guitar" written for 27:50, and given that Iamur Warder starts at 15-something, they're long songs. I already feel myself getting drowsy as I'm still listening to Iamur Warder, which I just realized is the same song. So the second part's not too bad at all, but the first part I lost interest in quickly.
Brian Eno's Foreign Affairs would've been more enjoyable for me to, again, have some moelody hanging over the song. If I ever go on safari, though, this song's coming with me. Tang Dream's Stratosphere, I enjoy the march, but I think the lead synth should probably be redone or removed - it feels out of place. The guitar was an interesting/good choice for this song.
Walk About was a nicely short track, not much going on there for me, but at least it wasn't 10 minutes. I can't imagine listening to E2-E4 with its original length of an album. It has some funkiness to it, though, and as I feel with most of these songs, would be more accessible were they built on a little more in terms of melody and cut down more in terms of repetition.
Tonto's Expanding Headbands' Tonto Motion has a unique cartoony feel, or like it could be part of some greater Ween song. I'm sorry to keep saying it, it's just that these songs all feel, to me, to be lacking elements that would make them more enjoyable. You put a good drummer on this one, and bring up the flute-whistle sound and you really would have a Ween song. I don't mind this song in particular, I just feel it could be better with, for example, drums, and (more distinct) parts. I find it interesting that, ostensibly, the reason for creating 'partless' or 'shifting' music is to get away from the repetition and cliche of verse-chorus-verse, and instead they simply repeat on a much smaller scale while slowly introducing and varying rather than going for contrast.
The Mother Mallards song, Sarah's Motion? would probably have been a better place for much of the above, since I actually find Tonto Motion to be one of the most listenable tracks on the podcast, and Sarah's Motion to be one of the least enjoyable in any way. I have nothing positive to offer for this track. Even Kazoo, which follows it, has at least some depth in terms of fore/background. The closer, whatever it was called, was okay also, but did not change on any of the things I've said so far.
So there's my review. That took a looong time and I tried to find positives and things to keep my ears open, but ultimately, I couldn't get into it. Sorry and thanks!

OK, I'll try to put up Simon's tonight. Meanwhile, am listening to Llama's/Mobiustrip. Will be writing a review soon too.

Mobiustrip Podcast Review
In the interest of getting caught up, I am reviewing this podcast more or less as I listen, going back here and there to relisten to bits and/or songs as needed.
NiN/SiN - I actually have only heard this band once in school, they seem to have changed a lot from what I remember, or perhaps I'm the one who has changed. I actually enjoy this song in a Duran Duran meets Joy Division meets generic rock singer voice sort of way. Which sounds like a backhanded compliment, and maybe it is, but I do enjoy the song, and would check out more from them. I'm kind of in the mood for something with a beat today, so this is filling that nicely. Both this and the Vitalic song, My Friend Dario would be welcome changes to the club music we get now here in Saskatoon - as much as I like Miserlou I hate that it has been raped for what is otherwise an utter piece of %$^@%^@ of a song. However, I get tired of Dario where the NIN song holds my interest enough that it's enjoyable to listen on its own.
Theme from Tokyo I could see growing on me, but it sounds a little produced, a little fake I suppose. The verse/chorus transition is a little uninteresting because there's not much of a transition to speak of. Still, so far I've become very excited for this podcast, enjoying so far. And so we move on to Such a Lovely Thing. I don't know what you call this type of music, but I definitely hear the Fiddler on the Roof connection, which, incidentally, is a soundtrack I adore and own. This is a fun track, very fun! I may throw it on a mix of my own in the future. I couldn't listen to a whole disc of this guy's vocals, but I am enjoying the hell out of this as a one-off track. Possibly because of the little rip-off of Zorba I just went through there? Who's to say? The fun continues with Hot Club of Cowtown's Crazy 'cause I Love You. Incidentally, Cowtown is a nickname for nearby city Calgary, not sure if there's a connection or if the band is Canadian. They'd be a lot of fun live I'm sure.
We get to the "fabled middle section" starting with Don't You. Now it's not bad, but it's not my cup of tea, I guess. I'm not sure why. The piano part is fairly interesting, she has a nice voice, but I guess it's just not that interesting overall. Then This Property is Condemned, which I suffer the same confusion from. There is nothing wrong with the song, in fact the intro grabbed me, but it just didn't hold on. I don't know why. Then there's the Nickle Creek song, or rather cover, Spit on a Stranger. Perhaps I don't appreciate or understand the need to ever, EVER again use nickle in the name of a band, but maybe they've been around a long time, who's to say? This song's not bad but some of the higher vocal work/falsetto at the beginning makes me cringe badly. Once it gets away from that, though, the song starts to rock pretty nicely. I would have to chop the falsetto parts out to make it listenable though. It's A Long Line is a cool song but would still benefit from a little more dynamics.
Follow Me is a little boring for my tastes, to be honest. However, the next song, Rise Up!, has cowbell so that makes up for it. Or it would, but this song itself is a little one-dimensional. i.e. it's the same (admittedly cool) riff throughout except for a seemingly pointless noisedown...
I don't much care for the vocals of Preacher Man, though I suppose they suit the song. Kind of what I imagine Tom Waits to sound like, though I've never heard anything by him. Actually, bears a bit of resemblance to Reid Paley, in my limited exposure to him. The song itself is decent, nothing to write home about but enjoyable, especially the last section and outro. Doomsday Averted reminds me of a certain Led Zep song, maybe When the Levee Breaks, maybe Misty Mountain Hop, more likely a mix of the two and the general aesthetic they had. I like this one.
Finally, the last two. Well, not finally, I quite enjoyed this podcast, especially the first half. But it's been a long review. Emmaline was pretty dull to me, I didn't find much to enjoy here. I don't dislike the vocal style, but I'd sooner see it over something a little more interesting since it is rather droning. I guess it fits, I just want something a little more intriguing. And then Sad Eyes. Of course I enjoy having some piano, and this is a nice song I'm not in the mood for at the moment but still enjoy. Very nice, progressive.
Love the ending, I feel like I should be watching the credits scrolling against a building or else some wacky freeze-frames of the show. :)
Thanks for a great podcast, Llama.

yep, happened to mine towards the end, which is why I ended up not putting in all my introductions. Complete arse. I think the way to get round it may be to set up and mix down your podcast in three or four parts, then splice the mp3's together.
Cof, thanks for the review. Basically what you're saying is that it started of good and got progressively worse?;)
The song 'Don't You' is about 2 minutes too long I think, and is easy to lose interest in. How anyone can't love every Maria McKee song, I don't know.
In retrospect I would probably take out the Nickel Creek song and also use a different Magneta Lane track.

Cassandra Mix
Favs: OCTOBRE – Just Something I Can Ignore, SHANNON WRIGHT – Less Than A Moment, ERIC'S TRIP - Secret For Julie Least Favs: SPOR - Liquid Eden Comments: What a mix! Huge is the only word to describe it. I have lots of notes, so here they go in no particular order (well, i guess they sort of follow the tracklisting...) Queen - Mustafa - This song brings back memories of my 7th grade obsession with Queen. The guitar work is much more aggressive than i recall. Killing Joke - Requiem - I saw the Foo Fighters do this live in 1998 at William Paterson University in next door Wayne, NJ. Grohl let his guitar w/ the delay go on for a few minutes after the song, making some wiseass quip like "Tired of this yet?" Blonde Redhead - Forumer Apl4eris introduced me to them a few mixes ago, and i really enjoy their stuff. I loved the bridge/breakdown section of "Sweet 69" Shannon Wright blew me away! I really loved her tracks, and Echo and the Bunnymen surprised me (the only exposure i had to them was that my friend Dan used to date a girl who loved them and made him spend about 100 dollars to go see them in NYC back in the late 90s during their reunion) The drumbeat from the Sloy song reminds me very much of the Pixies' "I Bleed" Is the Octobre song title a quote from HIGH FIDELITY? Regardless, excellent! Where can i get more of your music? I love that Folk Implosion record. Listening to it now, it sounds to me like Lou Barlow fronting the Yoshimi/Soft Bulletin era Flaming Lips I have heard rumors that "Coatails of a Dead Man" is about Kurt Cobain/Courtney Love, which would be interesting. That is from my least favorite Primus album - they just got all the guests they could and tried to sell records to the rap/metal crowd. That song is by far the best on the album with the best collaborator (that and the Stewart Copeland production on one track).
Wow, i said a lot.

Hey Zub - you may want to wait a bit more, as i know that Tre has her mix ready to go. And speaking of Tre, i'm about to review her flatmate's podcast.
Simon's Podcast:
Favs: Adem - "Statued," Manitoba - "Cherrybomb" Least Fav: Caribou - "Pelican Narrows" Comments: I really enjoyed every single song on this podcast, with the Caribou being my least favorite of the bunch. Another way that Caribou and Manitoba can be linked, despite personel, is that they are both songtitles by a certain singer/songwriter as well... I like the pairings that you created (even if the reggae was a bit obvious), and the mix, to my ears, flew by. And, as you know, i'm a big fan of your blog, so this is futher proof that you should quit your job and do more things to entertain me while i'm supposed to be doing my job.

Since work is painfully slow, i just went through the whole massive thread and checked up on who reviewed what. Don't forget that when we all signed up, we agreed to review! So anyway, i may have missed a few, but this seems pretty complete.
Kathryn- Kiki's mix has been the only one that every single person reviewed. Dean - Still waiting on reviews from Zub and Crispy Remi - Still waiting on reviews from Zub, Crispy, Tre, and OBW. Brian - Still waiting on reviews from Remi, Zub, Crispy, Llama, Tre, OBW and Cheese. Denis - Still waiting on reviews from Kathryn, Remi, Zub, Crispy, Llama, Tre, OBW and Cheese. OBW - Still waiting on reviews from Kathryn, Remi, Denis, Zub, Crispy, Llama, Tre. Llama - Still waiting on reviews from Kathryn, Remi, Denis, Zub, Crispy, OBW, Tre, Cheese. I know the reggae was kind of obvious, but I don't really care seeing as they're both ace songs.

Agreed - have you ever heard Marley's "Mr. Brown?" It is my personal favorite piece of 'classic' reggae. I got it on a Mojo sampler CD that won't rip to my computer (when i was in college for some bizarre reason the campus book store imported Mojo).

Americans love Mojo, this is a fact I have discovered. I don't think I have the song, but will certainly investigate. I'm kind of hoping it's a forerunner of Mr Brownstone...

Er, in my defence I've only listened to three that I haven't reviewed, had that whole house moving no internet thing in the middle of the podcasting. I'll try to download and listen and review before I start work.
Which reminds me what do I do with my podcast? don't start ftp'ing at me because I'm ftp clueless (as previously stated).

Simon, i actually don't really like Mojo - i just wanted a good reggae sampler around the same time i saw that.
Tre, the first step is to email Dean, via yousendt or something, your podcast. Then, you can download a program for your computer via Download.com - search for FTP and go from there. Once you get that far, email me and i'll walk you through the rest.
