The only Herzog movie I've seen is Nosferatu. Maybe one the best remakes ever? It has such an eerie atmosphere, and has a strange documentary-crossed-with-amateur-theatrical feel at times! And Kinski is sooo creepy as Nosferatu!

Stroszek is great as well, have you seen it floop? Nosferatu didn't click with me as well as his other films I've seen -I think he works best with his own material/documentaries. Herzog is utterly amazing. I like the fest idea. Now, how to make the time?....

Just finished watching the Quay brothers' "Institute Benjamenta". Holy shit. Absolutely brilliant, imho.
It's based on a story by Robert Walser, who was a large influence on Kafka and Hess. The Quay brothers' first feature length, and first foray into live action, vs. animation. I was already infatuated with their animation, but this blew me away.

apl, i have not seen STROSZEK. should i make that the first on my festival list?

to me MY BEST FIEND is a great place for someone to introduce themselves to Herzog, since it covers many of his films,a and, i think, reveals a lot of what he's like..

also, it's fucking hilarious

FITZCARRALDO! I have to watch that before I'm thirty. Have to see it, though it sounds painful! (the actual premise of the movie, not the actual movie)!

Apparently, Herzog has 3 documentaries out right now:

The White Diamond "A film about the daring adventure of exploring the rainforest canopy with a novel flying device – the Jungle Airship"

Wheel of Time - a documentary of the pilgrimage of Buddhist monks to the place where the Buddha found enlightenment. He apparently interviews the Dalai Lama. (can't wait to see this one)

and Grizzly Man - you've probably seen publicuty for this one.

floop, Stroszek would be a great starter, just be prepared for the Herzog-like ending. This movie intensified my inane desire to play the accordian.

therewererumors, I recently heard an interview with Herzog on NPR's Fresh Air (I think - wherever I heard it, it was great), where it was mentioned there was a documentary of the making of that film, called "Burden of Dreams:Making Fitzcarraldo". Considering how amazing the actual movie was, I can't imagine how they had another full documentary team involved in the process. Another one I can't wait to see.

(edit: ahhh, here it is, you can listen via the streaming link - http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4774946 )

Getting to enjoy Herzog while he is still alive and active *almost* equates to how I might have felt if I had grown up during Akira Kurosawa's career.

I liked in Julien Donkey Boy when he says,"You might want to ask yourself, do I feel lucky?" ala Dirty Harry Callahan. The German accent really puts it over the top.

Seeing as that was quite a bold statement, I decided to research a little and have now added it to my Amazon rental list. Looks like fun.

Matrix 2 and 3. Guy goes round calling himself a saviour, in this case The One, then sacrifices himself to rid the world of suffering, dies in a crucified pose but 'he'll be back.' Hmm I've seen this before somewhere...

Zub, I understand what you mean about needing to get into a certain mode. Once you're in the groove, though, it all clicks. If that makes any sense.

Maybe you just don't like it. That's OK. Doesn't mean you're uncool.

A lot of the humor was to be found in the deadpan approach to things, I think.

Floop? Someone?

I did a websearch on it, saw 'absurd', 'deadpan' and thought it might appeal.

i thought it was a unique little film, but not as great as everyone made it out to be. it's subsequent overpopularity made me like it even less. but there are some hilarious scenes in it. i might like it more on a 2nd viewing.

had some cool editing too

i rented STROZEK on apl's recommendation. haven't watched it yet.

forum members having an impact on each others lives... it's touching.

so, if i had gotten into a deadly car accident on my way to the video store to rent STROZEK, would apl be partially responsible?

I just watched Irreversible. Certainly impressive, in the sense that it has definitely left a big impression on me, and in the most part it's a positive impression. Two very disturbing scenes though, one in particular was the hardest scene to watch in any film. I just wasn't expecting a film to be quite so graphic. Not one that got passed for release anyway.

It takes a lot to shock me in a film, but this film certainly did that in parts. Some excellent direction in it. Particularly fine camera work.

The kid who made this movie made it while living in his parent's house about 10 miles away from where I live. Almost no budget or anything, but then I think it won the Sundance Film Festival or something. Pretty amazing.

Last night I watched Elia Kazan's A FACE IN THE CROWD. Brilliant. Groundbreaking. And totally relevant today, if not more so than it was in 1957. I hate to use the phrase "ahead of it's time" because nothing is really truly ahead of it's time if it manifests when it does. But this film could forsee. The cast was magnificent. Andy Griffith (pre-Mayberry days, and still unpolished and brash), Patricia Neal (one of our best past actresses), Walter Matthau in an amazingly sexy performance (which is hard to say about good old Walt) and the wonderful Lee Remick in her first film appearance. It's CITIZEN KANE meets Howard Stern meets Jerry Lee Lewis meets Ronald Reagan meets NETWORK. This was a film I put off for years, which makes no sense being a Kazan-fan. Ahhh! When films were great!
