Really?
I've never seen the trailer so I don't know how they try and sell it but it's good, perhaps it tries a little too hard to be conspicuously 'indie' but it's funny and engaging.
I guess it deals with issues of alienation as it follows the lives of 4 or 5 americans over a short period of time.

I don't remember everything from the trailer but it looked like your typical romantic comedy - girl writes "Me" and "You" on her pink shoes and moves/joins her feet, ooh... Usually I try to get inside the theater after the trailers cause most of the time they suck.

Over the weekend, I saw a few movies at a friends house-Dead And Buried, a cool little early-eighties horror-thriller, Face Of Fu Manchu, starring Christopher Lee (a lot of fun), and Near Dark, which is a cool 80's vampire flick. Jenny Wright, who plays May in it, is beautiful, too! :) |

I watched Annie Hall yesterday. It's really good. (And Diane Keaton deserved her Oscar) |

I just watched The Impostor (based on a Philip K. Dick short story) I enjoyed it. Not as good as Blade Runner or Minority Report but way better than Paycheck. |

THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES
very good - its been sitting on my coffee table for a month in the red netflix envelope - i should've watched it sooner
and
FUGAZI - INSTRUMENT
A pretty decent documentary - i wish it was chronological and they had a better sound mix, b/c a lot of the interview clips were muddy and hard to understand

The last episode of Six Feet Under. I thought it was very good; my neighbor started to cry!
I've always been curious about FUGAZI, I'll have to check that one BF |

Woodstock the movie: I'd never seen it all the way through.
"The warning I'm getting people is, don't take the brown acid-it's a bummer." Classic.
Pretty entertaining. Joan Baez sounded like a hen that needed to be put down and apparently the Grateful Deads' performance was so bad that they will never include it in any version of the movie. |

I had no expectation going into it whatsoever. In fact, I had no idea what it was about. It reminded me of a similar experience I had myself when a mysterious ex wrote me out of the blue and explained I had a 19 year-old kid from our former relationship (this was four years ago). I went on a soul-splattered trek to discover my 'son', but realized on the road that if I had a 19 year-old kid, I would have had to have been 11 years old at the time of conception. It seemed very unlikely to me so I went home, broke and confused. When I looked at the letter again, the envelope had a different address than mine on it...the mailman had misdelivered it. Boy, I was upset. To soothe my nerves I went out to see BROKEN FLOWERS.

I watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High tonight. Thats always a fun movie. It was the first time ever though that I noticed Nicholas Cage's cameos.
I tried to rent the Ballad of Jack and Rose, but the local video store didn't have it in. I guess I'll have to wait a few days.

I just watched Scum (on C4), I think it was the tv version as the film version is supposidly banned. Lots of institutionalised brutality, I really liked the smart guy who explained it all to guard and had it all thrown back in his face, examplifing the vicous cycle they were stuck in.

My cat eating a lizard. I think they have to eat a few of those before realising they make them sick, it's one for each cat at the moment.

i watched SUPER SIZE ME last night. the subject matter is fascinating, but the filmmaking itself left a little to be desired. i didn't think the guy was that entertaining. it would have been much better with someone who was more entertaining (ie. maybe more funny?) |

great in the way that many Herzog documentaries are: he always manages to explore people who are on the border of things and bring up interesting questions along the way. you think the film is going to be about one thing but they usuallly end up being something else..
you don't see the killing. but they do talk about it. the film is more about this guy, and trying to get to the bottom of his personality.. what makes him tick / his personal demons etc..
but also touches on larger questions about nature, civilization and humanity ..
for him to include the killing stuff would just be exploitative (though obviously it's hard not to be curious)

Bruce Chatwin has a story about when Herzog filmed his The Viceroy of Ouidah (as Cobra Verde) in Africa has this in it: "He [Werner Herzog] was also the only person with whom I could have a one-to-one conversation on what I would call the sacramental aspect of walking. He and I share the belief that walking is not simply therapeutic for oneself but is a poetic activity that can cure the world of its ills. He sums up his position in a stern pronouncement, 'Walking is virtue, tourism deadly sin.'" Herzog then told a story about he heard a friend was ill in Paris so he walked there from Germany, Cologne I think, and said by the time he got there she'd recovered.

i read an interview recently that Herzog was going into the BBC or wherever it was to pitch some other film he wanted to do. and while he was waiting to meet with some agent he saw all the tapes for this film, and learned about it. and when he got in there he said THIS is the film i want to do.. and basically demanded that they let him do it
he also said he considers it his best documentary..
personally, i still think MY BEST FIEND is his best |

Hmm I'd like to see that film. Chatwin really admired the way Herzog held himself when filming Cobra Verde, said he had the most soothing manner, there are scenes with kings in it and since he was shooting it in Ghana he had to hire the actual king in his court to act in it or face insulting him. Since the king wasn't used to being ordered about he had to give him directions like 'Your Majesty would you hold your very royal head this way so the light can catch your face.' The only time he grumbled was over the ladies of the court kept running off to change costumes, he said, 'They think nothing of continuity.'
