That's great! I bet Frank would enjoy that silvereel.

What does Frank have against pigs?
Mind you, Jesus apparently had the same problem, and everybody loves him.

Maybe the shirt with the message about cupids and angels was made from a demon pelt.

was there really a message about cupids and angels on her shirt?
consider breaking up the lines like so: "why do cupids and angels continually haunt her dreams like memories of another?" and then, "Life is painted on her shirt in capitals."
just a theory |

OK, here is another theory. the words said, electrically played for outer space... morse code??
the long syllables can = - and the short ones = .
Why do cupids and angels -.. .- .. D A I Continually haunt her .- ... .. A S I dreams like memories of another life ... .. - ... - S I T S T Is painted on her shirt in capital .... .... .. H H I At first, it may not appear to say anything... DAIASISITSTHHI but if we look a little closer, and rearrange the letters... I.Ah, it is sad shit a message about the impending doom of the pixies?? quite possibly so.
more to come later |

In the line "there's only she and they," the "she" is Kim, representing how she has become something different from "they" (the rest of the band).

that was most likely directed at me.... it's not that i don't have a life, and sit around trying to find hidden meanings and such; this shit just kind of pops into my head. it's a curse. |

Ok, folks. I'm hella glad I found this, because I was over at the Pixies' BBS, and they started lookin' at me funny! My key input (and I've been researching JUST this VERY topic for years) is: There's a guitar solo bit that is played right after the lyric mentions "samples this song from Washington State", and it's an obvious copy of what needs to be deciphered by the notes from the music itself! I am a guitar player, but unfortunately I don't have my guitar with me at the moment, but... I'm almost POSITIVE that the mystery can be at least furthered if we pay attention to the notes there. There are NINE of them. They stand out. I imagine soon that I'll be able to transcribe these notes for everyone, but in the meantime, if anyone ELSE HERE has that musical ability....for the love of all things Pixie, Jesus, please take the time and do so!!! It's not difficult, just nine notes that may unloick the key to the whole shebang. I wish to fuck I had my guitar...Alas.
Soon, my lovelies! Also... kudos to silvereel. Something interesting may be there, too. I dunno.....

okay, great! Unless I'm mistaken (I haven't double-checked my transcription from that yet, but...) The notes are: D / C# / D / C# / B / G / A / F# / F
DC as in "Washington DC"?? Twice occurred?

I'm not good with numbers (time signatures!) -you mean "waltz-like", right? What I tried working on lately is figuring out either a Nirvana song, or a Jimi Hendrix song which mimics that phrase, (both artists of which I'm pretty familiar with most of thier discography) both slowed down, and not slowed down...but...so far nothing. I'm a bit flat busted now. Is there any possible connection you think with the Arecibo message? Did that thing fly out of Washington, perhaps? I haven't had time to research much, but that's another possibility.... I'll keep trying.....

The song "Silver" on Doolittle seems 'waltzy' to me, but again...I dunno time signatures from a a tube of toothpaste! It's lyrics seem pretty tame (pun intended), just like my said lame pun. Anyrood..... Carry on.

Arecibo is in Puerto Rico.... Didn't I read somewhere that Frank grew up there? That's a kinda interesting coincidence, even if it doesn't help this discussion. I dunno. Still in stumped-land.

The part following the "You can cry/you can mope" break in Mr Grieves has a similar feel, although I think it's 6/8 rather than 3/4..

i'm really intrigued by certain lines in this song.
"she and the they" "the free freeway" "we went to the store and got something great which samples this song from washington state" "this song is twice occurred, and now it's time to go away on holiday"
these lines seem really oddly phrased. one would think that the writer was trying to force a rhyme or something, but this is frank black we're dealing with; he always has a trick up his sleeve. |

ya, it is a very intriguing song. nice work silvereel. i think you're gonna crack the code! i think i said before that maybe this song is connected to motorway to roswell. "this song is twice occurred, and now it's time to go away on holiday" then in motorway, "last night he could not make it/ on a holiday" and freeway vs motorway- any significance?

Just thinking out loud: It's the song being referred to that troubles me the most. Jimi Hendrix's performance at Woodstock doing the Star Spangled Banner could be an instance of a song from Washington State, right? I dunno. I just wish to hell that we could contact someone who KNOWS, or maybe even pester Frank himself. Surely there's gotta be a way....

Is this the most obscure song the Man wrote?
I was thinking about splitting the first lines like this:
Why do cupids and angels continually haunt her dreams like memories of another life? [the answer]is painted on her shirt in capital
That is: the answer to this question is painted on her shirt, we don't see her shirt so we don't know the answer... Maybe he's talking about Kim Deal and wonders why she resurrected the breeders (she was in a group called the breeders when she was younger... a memory of another life...).

Or maybe Hester Prynne's "A" from Hawthorne's THE SCARLETT LETTER? Perhaps he is referring to her illegitimate daughter, Pearl.

I imagine the girl to be wearing a tee with the "cupids and angels" quote printed on it. In DC. She's a pretty girl. Wearing dirty converse. Brown hair. Yep, definately a brunette. But if there is an answer to the 'cupid' question, i'd love to hear it.
Maybe it's "SCHIZO".
Why do angels and cupids haunt her dreams? Because she's a schizoid.
