I have it on extremely good authority that Cooking Vinyl are to release Charles Thompson's pre-Purple Tapes Pixies' demos in the new year. Has anyone else heard this, I haven't seen it here...?

Eyethangyew. BTW, I promise I'm not just stirring up a rumour here, as far as I know this is 100% true.

There was an interview I read (or heard) recently where he seemed a little embarrassed about those tapes. If that's true, I don't see why he'd release them.

He was embarased by the college demo's. I think there was talk of a pre purple demo. Which is different. I'll find it yet.

The last Cooking Vinyl newsletter did say that these were going to be released this year, but gave no actual release date.

and I brought this up a couple of months ago I was laughed at by El Barto but he accepted his loss when it became clear there will be a cd like this So we're cool now
If I'm right the two pale boys will be on this cd too, some re-recording done by frank too. But that's just a rumour

Thanks BG.
This is the first topic brought up by Goodman. pre-pixies demo's TOPIC
This is the second topic brought up by Benwin. Into The White TOPIC
The gist I get from it all is:
These are not the college, boom box, bad sound, pre-Pixies, pre-Black Francis, songs.
These are the, Pixies already formed, probably already going by Black Francis, Pre-Purple tape, demo.
I wonder if the other topic, an unreleased version of 'here comes your man' is one of these demos.
Dave anything on this?

OK, I actually have official information on this from an unnamed source, and I'm going to dripfeed it to you! From what I can establish, these are demos as recorded in Gary Smith's front room, I think the details of this are on Alec Eiffel somewhere, maybe as Rock A My Soul. As we have established, Cooking Vinyl are going to release these, current release date is set as March 2004.

hmm..not sure Thomas.. Maybe this is what my inside source was referring to for the new year...this seems much more likely than anything else i've heard, as he stressed it would be 'very different'. |

Benji might be correct - these are probably from the same sessions as the 1986 tapes that were being handed out to promoters and club owners/bookers at the time. Tracklists vary according to which source you believe, one possible is listed at the top of http://pixieslive.com/8687.htm

but i wouldn't have thought the quality of these would be high enuf to be released properly and officially... just going by the ones on DTTP.
guess we'll just have to wait and see. |

CD2 will be re-recorded versions of Pixies songs that Frank Black has recorded with Two Pale Boys, essentially acoustic but with trumpets and odd stuff like that.

Holy shit, the 'sing for your supper' tapes?! That would rock ass -- apparently they kicked ass.
I have a tape with the '86 (pre-Pilgrim) Pixies demos on, but I can't frigging find it right now! The version of Here Comes Your Man is very cool -- slower and country-er than the version on the Pilgrim demos. It has Brick is Red, too, with an extra verse -- "Brick is red/And Hitler's dead/Hang me/The Earth's not round/It's shaped like an egg/Hang me" -- where the 'Rosa version is all instrumental... can see why he dropped it though... :)

Wasn't that in the inside sleave of the DTTP cd? Haven't read that in a long time. It was warm and fuzzy read. Gotta find it again.

CD1 is indeed rumoured to be the 'sing for your supper' tapes, although nothing is guaranteed as of yet. Two Pale Boys can also be found with Pere Ubu on Erewhon, also on Cooking Vinyl, and on David Thomas' Mirror Man, as the Pale Orchestra.

I read it in the old Rock A My Soul fanzine, but I believe the DTTP text was taken from that article (by Gary Smith)...
It just occurred to me that the DTTP 'Golden Ticket' songs *could* be from that tape... ooh, Cheeseman, you better be right (that Pale Boys thing sounds cool)! Any idea when this stuff's due out?

I've heard the Two Pale Boys/FB thing... its a VERY odd sounding thing - I thought it was some weird Pixies tribute band at first with someone copying FB's vocals, till I realised... it was a long time ago though...! |

i've been meaning to ask jo... sorry for the off-topic... do you know my dad, neil cossar? just wondering as he used to do promotion for 4ad, whilst working for TMP... also had a lot of contact with you guys whilst head of music/programming at signal cheshire. he knew one or 2 people quite well at 4ad, just wondering if one was you. i don't think he does any promo for you know, as i think you're in-house now?

Benji, probably 2-3 months ago? not 100% but it wasn't that recent... and bumblebeeboy2, sorry, I work for Beggars Group rather than 4ad specifically, so I'm afraid I don't know your dad - sorry! |
