I wouldn't say that anything Cobain did was a direct rip off per se, maybe an homage to the bands he liked and sometimes when you're writing a song it ends up sounding like what you're listening to at that time anyway it doesn't mean you were necessarily trying to. As far as the Weezer comparison go I've always thought that Weezer sounded a lot like Pavement in most areas in fact I had a friend listening to Slanted and Enchanted with me over the summer that kept swearing we were listening to Weezer... then again that kid was a moron.

i think kim deal got the whole 'in the shade' idea used in 'cannonball' from mrs john murphy's 'gigantic'. bitch. and as for that frank black, don't even get me started on that 'velvety' song. total rip off of black francis's 'velvety instrumental version'. what a bastard.

The 1982' song from the replacements on their first EP "go". It recalls me of surfer rosa and bossa nova and nearly everything from nirvana |

Brainiac - "Smack Bunny Baby" LP
Pixies fans should worship this band for taking a good thing and molding it into their own. They had to break up because Tim passed away. Would've been huge. Im tellin ya. John is in Enon now, find them as well. |

Interloper you are the whole reason I got into Enon after you posted on here about "Rubber Car". BTW I do have Hissing Prigs... by Brainiac.

| Awesome...I live in the town that they sprang from, and that Enon John and Matt, and certain ex Pixies members. All Brainiac is incredible stuff. Enon too. My fave is still Believo. |

I think alot of Tuscadero's early stuff sounds like the Pixies. What ever happened to them any way?

I dunno, I am sure the Canadians will notice this, but I have noticed that Treble Charger seems to rip off a few riffs here and there. I mean I dont know if they are even doing it, because it doesnt seem that Treble Charger is even good enough to know who the Pixies are. But anyways, just something I noticed. Or maybe its just me. Ramble ramble.
And the Dandy Warhols sound like the pixies, but thats just my humble opinion. |

"Tyler," by the Toadies, is the chords of "Gigantic" with the "Where Is My Mind" lead guitar lines played backward.
Just about everything on the Toadies "Rubberneck" album has a very strong Pixies feel to it. They use similar time signatures and the loud/soft dynamic, with the basslines carring the songs.

| I don't really hear the ABSOLUTE similarity between Blur's "Song 2" and "Distance Equals Rate Times Time". Sure, the first three chords are in the same order, but the main hook of the riff in Blur's "Song 2" is the last part of the riff, which D=RxT does not have. Doesn't matter anyway, cuz "D=RxT" is a direct rip off of the bridge to the original "Subbacultcha". |

| Sure you can! For example, my friend ripped himself off when he bought the re-release of Trompe Le Monde after I told him it wasn't remastered. He was convinced it would be and that I was misinformed. Was he pissed. |

Are you lot on drugs???
None of those songs "rip off" tame
I think you are all overstating the Pixes influence a little. They influenced for sure but I have never heard anyone "rip them off". Well excpept Chris Morris but that was a send up and very funny. I think the Pixies are one of those bands that you can't "rip off" 'cos if you tried it would sound too obvious, it would stick out like a sore thumb. I suppose that's part of their genius, they were so unique that nobody could copy them |

Really, I think there's a big difference between showing your influences in your music (which I consider to be a good thing) and just trying to be the next Pixies (or whatever band you care to name). A tribute and a rip-off are two very different things, and I think some people will often refer to the former as the latter.

So we're gonna be politically correct and say these bands were "heavily influenced" by the pixies?

OK clam down I was only kidding with the drugs thing but I am pretty sure that The Cranberries, Blur, The Hives and Oasis have not been heavily influenced by the Pixies. I think you've picked the wrong bands there.
VoVat I don't really see what you're getting at 'cos I agree with you. All I was saying (and I think I explained it well enough) is that I have never heard anyone who has ripped off the Pixies, influenced by them yes but not ripped off. There is indeed a big difference.
To be honest with you I am surprised this thread has lasted as long as it has 'cos I really don't think there are that many songs out there that sound like the Pixies to a degree that is worth mentioning

A lot of bands openly admit this - fair play to them!
(eg. The Frames, Ash, Turn - and that's just the Irish ones) |

and for the love of monkeys stop saying "ooh this sounds like a rip off" or "this band" "rips off" the pixies in "this song"
after you've listened to the pixies it is impossible to not be influenced by them even if its subconcious and those arent "rip offs" their "copying" a rip off is when u make the pixies sound bad or u do something to show a flaw in the pixies and i've never experienced that, everytime a band tries to rip off the pixies they just end up looking dumb cuz it back fires cuz the pixies have no flaw

He sings that as well but then he goes to: "I was driving on the 9 and all across the AM band". |
