I agree with the Toadies comment made earlier. I love the Toadies. They show their pixies influence but have a sound of their own. If you haven't listened to them check them out.
Some of Radiohead's earlier songs have a pixies feel to them. Jonny Greenwood is a big pixies and Frank Black fan though.
The Brainiac comment was good also.
Also my band the cut*off has a pixies and frank black feel to it. check it out at www.thecutoff.com

Definitely Radiohead, Creep is a complete Pixies rip-off, which is a good thing. When Paranoid Android came out, Jonny and Thom said it was intended as a cross between Pixies and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Nirvana's About a Girl has a pixies feel. About a girl is like cactus from the pixies. the same cords but nirvana changed the strum pattern and the chorus.

Mosdest Mouse do have a bit of Pixies about them in some songs, I wouldn't say that they sound like the Pixies, but there is some influence in there. Brilliant band.

not pixies, but FB's Headache aounds a lot like that good charlotte song, i think it's called girls and boys or something. Compare the part where he sings "This wrinkle in time, can't give it no credit" with their incredible lyrics "Girls don't like boys...". I'm a masochist, so I actually listened to them at the same time, and they ripped him off. Drums and bass are more or less identical. And I saw one of those bastards wearing a death to the pixies shirt in a magazine or something. Stealing isn't cool, shitheads.

Track by a band called British Sea Power, called Apologies to Insect Life. Could have been lifted straight from Surfer Rosa. Beats any other soundalike into the soil

Although I agree with you, I have to say that Good Charlotte (talented as they are, sarcasm of course) were aiming to rip off someone else. I believe the good charlotte song is called "Boys & Girls", not to be confused with "Girls & Boys" by Blur. Listen to the two together. The music is not the same, but the lyrics for the chorus are basically changed just enough so those fuckers wouldn't get sued. Death to Good Charlotte!

for the record, i mentioned them in this thread already. but lyndon's surfer rosa comment is exactly right. BSP is a bit weak in the originality department, but they do incorporate their influences well--with skill, sincerity and passion. they combine american and british 80's indie in lovely ways. "remember me" is also strikingly reminiscent of the pixies (perhaps tromple le monde-y) with a bit of dinosaur jr thrown in. "favours in the beetroot fields" does a pretty good pere ubu impression. "childhood memories" and "carrion" have a strong psychadelic furs quality. and many of the tracks also evoke glam-era bowie. an unsual and complex mix, but they pull it off pretty well.

Yes. These songs sound as if they definately have heavy Pixies influences. They do not sound like The Pixies though. Not even if you type in all capital letters. They sound distinctly like Modest Mouse.

Um yeah...I'd say they do. You know you should try to maybe venture out and try a little something more unique.

Some of that stuff is too close for comfort.

I don't really think that these songs sound like the Pixies at all, Jason.

The leads don't sound like something Joey would put on a song, or at least not the way he would play it. The vocals don't sound like the way Frank would sing a song. The bass could be seen as similar, and the drums in Mesa in particular are fairly generic so the argument might be made that they could've come from the Pixies.

That said, the songs are a little formulaic, especially Mesa. And the way the singing is done reminds me of some other bands that must never be mentioned on this forum...

Listen to the last song on the music page.

Of course they don't sound EXACTLY like the pixies/frank black but c'mon, man.

I am just saying that it's nice to pay homage to your musical heros but remember to filter it a little through yourself.

You don't have to just Blanket disagree with everything I say...try and see where I am coming from Dean.

I love it how you snuck in your band at the end. Excellant advertisement. You got people to take a listen. I think I remember a post from you on the Toadies BBS. You get an "A" for effort. I didn't listen them, but I'll listen now. I'm a sucker for Dallas/Ft Worth bands. Baboon are my new favorite.

In Mesa you can really hear the Toadies guitar/drums influence.

While waiting for big swim to download I did a search on the Toadies BBS and sure enough there it is. You are NowRock'N'Roll. Which are lyrics from the song Stop It.

Okay Big Swim is Space Is Gonna Do Me Good. The lyrics also suggest that a Big Swim = long distance trek in space. It is a fun song though.

Heh, come on Jason, I don't try to blanket disagree wtih everything you say, and the fact is that I don't. I actually went and checked out their site based on your comments because I thought it'd be amusing to hear. I do agree with you as far as being careful with confusing "influence" with "rip-off", and a band has to have its own sound.

But I listened, and while the beginning of Outsiders did seem to smack of the Pixies, and in particular Where Is My Mind, maybe even including the first verse a little bit, it quickly moved in a different direction. Unfortunately, not a new direction - I think they sound a little much like a less-produced Creed or someone in both of these tracks - but not really sounding like the Pixies.

I assume that's what you mean by the last track on their music page.

Their first track I definitely didn't hear a Pixies influence, which is not to say that you don't, just that I don't. Maybe think of it as an invitation to elaborate.

To be honest, on second listen, Outsiders does have a little more Pixies feel than I heard the first time through... maybe I should've listened to them a bit more before commenting. I was just expecting to be hit over the head with it, I guess.

I know that you have to be hit over the head to understand ANYTHING, Dean but didn't you think that the last song on the page, the one we are talking about above your post sounds like Space is Gonna Do Me Good? Too much? Definitely...

I am not an Influence Nazi, as I have come to learn that showing your influences is not such a bad thing, but you have to have a good filter on there when it comes to lifting straight sequences.

You can play "in the spirit" of someone, but don't rip their chord progressions off directly WHILE trying to have all your instruments sound like them WHILE singing lyrically the same idea.

Bottom line is...they need to um...stretch out a bit more shall we say.

The songs we have to download on our site are so old. We have been meaning to update them. I really don't like the vocals that much on them either. We had only been playing together for 2 months when we recorded that. Man, we definetly don't want to sound like a "less-produced Creed". That sucks. Our cd that was just finished sounds way better. Our song, big swim, does have a small part that is like FB Space is gonna do me good. Whenever we started playing that song I knew it sounded familiar but I couldn't place why it sounded so familiar. I didn't figure out why it sounded so familar until months after we wrote the song. I am going to put some of our songs up from the new album that sound way better than the songs that are up there now and I want to see what you guys think of those. Maybe you will be able to hear more originality in those.
