I thought it would be interesting to make a list of songs that sound like the pixies wrote or recorded them or seem heavily influenced by the pixies. Not songs by bands that are just influenced by the pixies or have one or two things about them that sounds pixie-ish but songs that make you think "Hey this could have been a pixies song."
I'll start off...
Navvy - Pere Ubu Swallowed - Bush A Good Idea - Sugar Jenny - stellastarr* Sans Umbrella - The Bennies

Any song by Nirvana,
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" for some reason always reminded me of "La La Love You"
Maybe it's just me, but i see a similarity
Cobain openly admitted Nirvana was just a Pixes ripoff

Cobain actually admitted that 'smells like teen spirit' was a pixies rip off not nirvana. And maybe nevermind was slightly pixie-ish, but you cant compare bleach and in utero.

I don't think Nirvana sounds that much like the Pixies, certain songs like Umass, Gouge Away, and Planet of Sound seem to be very Nirvana-like. (all right, they are more similiar than that but I'm just tired of hearing the Nirvana ripped of the Pixies thing)
I think the bass lines on lots of Everclear songs sound right off of Doolittle. |

Please, do we have to go over the SLTS - Pixies comparison? This has been discussed in about 5 other topics Everybody knows Cobain called it a Pixies ripoff. There was no song that it ripped off directly...it was the style, the loud/soft dynamic which can be heard in Gouge Away and Planet of Sound. And yes, FB has said that he didn't invent it, which is pretty true, but he popularized it in alternative music.

| The whole of Mclusky's album "Mclusky Do Dallas" could have been a lost Pixies album. Being produced by Steve Albini, the acoustics are similar to Surferrosa as well. |

Yeah i've heard the slts-pixies thing way to many times,i suppose it is my fault though, everyone who i play trompe to i point out the fact that u-mass is extremely similar,if my memory serves then its the same 4 chords but slts starts at the 3rd one in u-mass

I don't think That White Stripes song sounds anything like Cactus. Both the songs might have somewhat of a "Thumping along" type beat/rhythm - that's the only similarity I can see, and that is present in a LOT of songs, not just Cactus. Apart from that, the songs are completely different.
Nor do I think that McLusky sound anything like the Pixies, besides the fact that they have a similar "psychoticness" in their songs. At least if you exclude the Last 2 Pixies albums.
Yes, Black Francis and The McLusky vocalist have both screamed like lunatics in their songs. Apart from that though, the music is quite different.
I think people in this thread are singling out small similarities that happen to also be common musical techniques in bands outside The Pixies and overblowing the similarity. _________________ NATURE'S TIME IS CUBIC AND PERPETUAL. LINEAR TIME IS WRONG AND SUICIDAL |

He's right!!! Pixies were and still are a hugely influential band, but I have never heard anyone "rip" them off. |

The biggest Weezer "rip off", which I've mentioned on the board before, is the song "Say It Ain't So", which has the exact same chords as Where Is My Mind?, except it starts on the C#m, whereas WIMM starts on the E. Try it at home!

I'm a big fan well that's mainly because it brings some child sentiment with it
I was a fan since the age of ten
They were influenced by the pixies, but not really a ripp-off like Nirvana's Nevermind or In Utero, . (come on, steve albini everybody knows he only went with albini because he loved the drumsound of Pod and Surfer Rosa and there is a huge ripp off on In Utero, I recall it's named Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, but I'm not sure, in the Gill Norton version of Gigantic, Joey bends two notes after eachother just after the soft Gigantic harmonies of Kim and Frank and just before the distorted Gigantic harmonies that eventually end the song. The bending of the two notes are the same.
no ripping off on Bleach or Incesticide btw

The first time I heard "The Sad Punk" I was shocked at how much the poppy breakdown that goes "and evolving from the sea" sounded like Weezer. I believe that the Pixies influence on Weezer is the most obvious there, though songs like "Wave of Mutilation" and "Velouria" definitely sound like Rivers Cuomo took influence from them.

"Enough Space" - Foo Fighters The lyrics are about "flying machines" and it has the word Space in it. Hell, the verses are reminiscent of "Space (I believe in)" and the chorus is "Tame" to a T. Plus, Frank Black was sitting next to Dave Grohl when he sang the vocals for the song.

stephen malkmus and the jicks have a song on their newest called dark wave that's quite pixie-esque in a highly evolved manner. tomahawk (mike patton) has a song on mit gas (their newest) called rotgut which sounds like the pixies, though more angular and jagged in its rhythms.
by the way drop nineteens was a great band back in the early nineties. i highly reccomend "national coma". girls backing vocals, track 3 sounds exactly like the pixies would have had they made another record after trompe le monde.
and don't forget song 2 by blur. the riff is a blatent rip off of d=rxt.
Visit the website of mine and Jim's former band. http://www.thebennies.com and keep a head's up over at http://www.noaloha.com for the bennies cover of hellbound |

i don't think using the same chords constitute as a 'rip off'. I mean there are many pixies songs with similar chords to the beach boys and the beatles, yet I wouldn't say Frank Black is ripping them off. Influenced, yes, but not ripping off. Chord progressions are universal, frank black didn't invent that chord progression. That being said, SAIS and WWIM are only similar in terms of dynamics, which could be said about all pixies-influenced bands
As for 7 Nation Army = Cactus, it's not just the thumping that is similar, it's the whole mood of the song and the vocals behind them.
As for Undone = I Bleed, it doesn't matter if one is more poppier than the other, they both have that deep bass verse that crashes into a distorted chorus with the "ooh's" in the background. |

In Bloom is PIXIES!
and if Frank was even more narcissistic he might have come up with Dr Wu (Steely Dan) or Banned From The Roxy (Crass)...point is Frank is timeless...

Sorry, we have to go over it. =/ =P
You're right about the dynamics and everything, but I'd say that Smells Like Teen Spirit sounds a bit like Debaser. Or not really sounds like, but if you listen to the rythm Frank plays F->Bb G->Bb it's similiar to nirvana's F->Bb ( same chords! ) and Ab->Db. Kurt could've been thinking about that too... but I don't know. |
