Know for your own sake, he can be a moody guy. But he's also very pleasant. For his live shows, if he's in a good mood, it shows. If he's in a bad mood, it also shows. If something really pisses him off during a show, it has been my experience he will be less than aproachable afterward. Also, when it's the FB and the C's playing, there is a lot of equipment to take down, and Frank is always out there like a working man moving gear after the show, so it's best to wait until he's done before aproaching him. Since it's a solo show, this may not be a concern. He has always been happy to sign things, I've seen someone give him like 10 albums covers to sign, and he just takes 'em and throw his "Fra Bla" on every one. You should have no problem getting him to sign anything you want. Dean got him to sign his homemade orange album t-shirt, I got him to sign TOTY, s/t, DW, BLD...
And yes, I'm jealous, I wish I were seeing him in a few hours. Have fun, it should be aprox. the greatest show of your life. |

Yeah, in Paris he would sign anything, CDs, t-shirts (he even drew an alien on some guy's t-shirt!)... Try to stay near the bar, it's how it worked out for me.

i think its hard to judge his mood. in camden he seemed pissed off one minute and happy the next. to be honest i think i would be too intimidated to approach him, if he was nasty to me i'd be really gutted. |

i think frank was a bit hard on that bloke who was singing. he was clearly a huge fan and was overwhelmed by the experience of having frank stand right in front of him. lighten up frank, give us a smile. |

I don't think he was hard on him at all. That person was putting him off and Frank made a joke of it, rather than being really pissed off at him. That's how it came across to me.

I was right in front of the singing guys, who were well drunk... falling all over the place, at one point practically waving a camera in Frank's face.

I've been lucky to get him to sign all of my cds (including my pixies cds. I've meet him four times after the show and He's always been very nice to me and all the rest of the drunks after his shows. The only advice I can give is to be very sincere and thankful. If your only a casual fan who only knows a couple of songs, he can tell definitly . I remember once I had six cd booklets and I only was going to ask him to sign a couple but He asked me if I wanted them all signed and thanked me for my patronage. The rest of the band are really nice guys as well.
Take Care and good luck.

Basically, you just have to be patient, and wait till he's not busy. Just use a bit of common sense, and you'll find him friendly and approachable. Don't try and hit on him as soon as the set is over; give him a while to chill after two hours of giving his all. After all, the man is a deity, and should be treated accordingly.

all this pussy-footing is absurd...just walk right up to him, tell him you are a big fan and ask if he minds signing something. He will probably do so, but as evidenced here, he can be a real fucking baby sometimes. |

i did read in some magazine that stephen malkmus approached frank backstage at a festival once to tell him what a big fan he was and frank said fuck off, can't you see i'm talking to my brother. this was in the gossip section of a magazine, probably the nme or melody maker, so i don't know if its true. i was about 8 or so years ago and i was a huge fan of pavement at the time, i was completely horrified that anyone could tell malkmus to fuck off. |

i wouldnt say he doesnt like people singing along. just for one song i think he was just distracted by people infront of him getting kinda eccentric about singing along....id say most people sang along for the following pixies songs and he seemed to not be annoyed about it.

I think a compromise is called for. On his next tour, perhaps he could employ a Pixies tribute band as his support act. This would appease the under age drinkers and grunge dinosaurs in Nirvana hoodies. Then, when it gets to nine o'clock, they can all fuck off home and watch MTV or download Busted's latest album from the internet. |

he did that? :(
Well I manage to dance to every single song when I listen to Black Letter Days so I'm definately going to be dancing in Edinburgh when fb and the c's play, whether they like it or not.
I remember when I played at a band's night a few years ago and I got such a buzz off people dancing; music is about having fun, a concert is not a funeral.

As The Catholics' steel guitars seem to be a permanent fixture these days; maybe it would be more in keeping with the Americana vibe if everybody line danced. |

Frank does NOT like moshing. He can get VERY surly when people mosh. He stopped Los Angeles right in the middle of the fast part in Vancouver last year because of the people moshing. He then said "I understand why people wanna ban rock n' roll", refering to the bahviour of (a few of the people in) the crowd. He finished the set and was not in a good mood afterward, and was unaproachable after the show. Not that anyone but me and Dean stayed to approach him... fools.
The next night in Portland, there was a little mosh action during "Monkey Gone To Heaven", and he leaned out right out into the crowd with the mic, mid song, and yelled "hey guys I'm up here!", which seemed to calm them down a bit. A while later, someone threw a large whiskey glass on stage and it shattered right beside Frank. He didn't say anything at the time, but they didn't do an encore that night, and only Dave P. came out after the show. I asked him why no encore, and he said "if someone threw a glass at you, would you come back out?". Hard to argue with. The next night went much better, the did an encore, and Frank was aproachable after the show, and we got a picture with him, so all is well. I still love you Frank! Especially since he was a peach at the S'toon and Regina shows. So anyway, if you plan on meeting Frank, don't whip any glasses at him while he's playing. He tends to discourage that. |

Well firstly, Sting sucks arse. As for moshing, how do you define moshing, I define it as jumping up and down. You're honestly telling me that this bothers Frank? Its a bit different from trying to murder him by throwing glass at him.

Jumping up and down is not moshing. I suppose there is no real definition of moshing, but I would say it's jumping around, and specifically into other people. This can be done in a nice way, where people just sort bump into each to the beat, while traditional moshing involves throwing yourself into others as hard as you can, and creating a "mosh pit" where a swirling mass of bodies usually ends up in bruises and stitches. Frank is fine with jumping up and down, but he does not like moshing. Trust me, if you get crazy enough, he may just point you out, or yell at you, or stop a song. I'm not saying you should stand there like you're dead (or a Deadhead), but respect for others is paramount over "having fun", or "being into it". I'm not saying you wouldn't respect others or anything, I'm sure you're a fine lad. Enjoy the show! |

Ok, I'm wrong about my definition; I do not mosh, I hate it when people hurt each other and jump into each other, |i don't do that, its disgusting. Howvere I believe that at a concert to you have to move, you can't just stand there; you have to get into the swing of it.

i hate crowd surfers- not that i've ever seen any at a frank show. i've been kicked and kneed in the head so many times that about a year ago i began to fight back. now, whenever i see someone clambering over the crowd i steal their shoes and throw them backwards into the crowd-that should teach the little bastards. |

When I saw Frank about two years ago there were tones of kids moshing and crowd surfing which really pissed me off and I dont think Frank liked it, I was trying to get up close but I was getting smuthered in flying bodies. I might hop up and down abit but I hate the pushing and elbowing.I got kicked in the head twice and it anit fun to loose your glasses I can tell you, when some asshole knocks them off and they get trampled on(it did'nt happen that time but it did happen to me in a club once, not very nice).

In vancouver a couple of years back a nobber got on stage during Fu Manchu, drunk and quite intimidating, and bellowed the words right in Frank's ear. Frank made a joke about it - if that had happened to liam gallagher he would have cancelled the tour.

I missed my chance to meet him last year at the Higher Ground show in VT. I'd just like to tell him that he's fucking brilliant and shake his hand, and maybe get something signed. Actually, I'd really like to have a 2 hour talk over a few beers and a joint, but that obviously ain't happenin'.

At a Cats Cradle show in NC on the TOTY tour, frank was playing and people started to mosh and crowd surf. at some point a guy got passed up front, his foot hit the mic, and the mic hit frank in the face. He stopped and said, "Look, you made me forget the words. I dont care if you jump around a little bit, but dont pass the guy." (Thus, "pass the guy" replaced crowd-surf in my vocabulary). Later no encore and short set. At another show, same venue, to support DITS, this drunk guy was jumping around and bumping people. Frank leaned out and said "Hey, Jackass"...again no encore that night. I fucking hate no encore. |
