The prophecy is coming true!
There was mention of a masked breakfast biding it's time, Speaking in tongues, in proverbs, in rhyme. A master of tabs, a citizen of evil Though perpetual darkness had rendered him feeble He struck in the night, a usurp attempt His wrathful spite from which none were exempt.
... and then the looking glass clouds over and the dark images are replaced with an unknown man cheerfully slopping through more spaghetti than the sovereign nation of Mozambique has seen in a fortnight...
It was terrible.
There, having made a lot of noise revolving around darkness, can I keep my title?
Now before I leave you, I'd like to ask: Isn't 'impeach' just another word for 'love'? |

ha.. well I looked "impeach" up at m-w.com and I don't think it defined the word as meaning "love." But you can be a dreamer.

So... back on topic, the artwork for Show Me Your Tears not quite what I expected for an album of that title. |

I've never joined the weezer message board despite them being one of my favorite bands for many years. I looked through a few threads and thought "what the hell, is this a joke?" Alot of posts were realllly ridiculous and immature, and just... stoopid.

yeah they only discuss why their last album was so bad to me it wasn't really bad fans can dislike an album but they really hate it and they come up with the most weird theories and they all want the OLD weezer back and hate the NEW weezer and and and and and I've got my hashpipe

I hate how "weezer fans" complain and wish weezer would record another pinkerton-esque album. Pinkerton is done and recorded and there wont be another album like it. Some people are so stuck in the past.

I would definitely like some semblance of the old Radiohead back...I kind of dig their experimental direction as of late, but they should intersperse it with some old school fucking guitar-driven rock, Radiohead-style. |

Radiohead have tended to get a little boring, its as if they've gone for a new age Pink Floyd style in my opinion.... PInk Floyd are good but at times they are fucking boring.

i have the new album and it sounds nothing like the old stuff really. infact there are a song or two on it that i downright hate. The Gloaming is so boring although i hear they play it live so that might be more interesting. with that said though, there are some awesome songs on it. defintily check out 2+2=5, probably in the top 10 or maybe even 5 of all time radiohead songs. and there are several others that are quite good. oh and the acoustic guitar is back on this cd albeit for only one song hah. anyway... frank black rules
edit: actually i just listened to the cd again because i was talking about it (i havent listened to it too much cause i plan on buying it) and actually it sounds more like the old stuff than kid A or amnesiac, though i woudlnt say theyve completely returned. but the song Go To Sleep or Wolf at the Door could be right off the Bends really.

I have the new Radiohead album as well...I agree that 2+2=5 is a great track...can't really speak for the rest of em though seeing as I haven't listened to it in its entirety yet (jus got it a couple of days ago) and I'd rather pass judgment after giving it a few complete listens. |

Ummmm, back to the artwork for the new album. I know it's all been said before about the artwork in an other massive thread, but I have'nt really liked any of the artwork since TOTY. I know Frank has said on the forum thats this is due to lack of time and funds but I have to say that good design does not take tons of time or money, you just need a good graphic designer(there are tons of them about, I know I'd do a discount or even for free for Mr Black). Being one myself(just a graphic designer, not necessarly a good one!), you could put togehter a really nice cd sleeve in a week and I've seen really beautiful cd designs coming from miniscul indepentant labels without tons of money to splash out. I'm only writing this from a design point of veiw and not from "sales" or "image" reasons. I really like the photo of the cat(I love kitch stuff like that) and the guitar but someones used some horrible filter to give it that fuzzy edge to blend into the horrible background. It makes it look really amateurish(first year college stuff, that I know I'm guilty of) or that it was'nt a great photo so they have to use a filter to "jazz" it up abit. The cat and guitar would have looked really nice a against plain background, but I'm guessing this is just some snap shot some in the band or even Frank shot, as the guitar strings go through the cat but the rest has been photoshoped out(hence the filter to make the edges smooth?).
The title fonts are teribble, the way white font over laps on the whitness of the cat, and the fonts are gaudy and cheesey! and would look better in the space beside the cat or even on the guitar. Ok, sorry for such a rant, I am no way having a go at Frank, anything with his name on it I'll buy and I can't wait for the album to come out, but designing is what I do and love, so I just had to have my say. Except I hate filters, except maybe for halftone. Over and out.

The band-name font barely succeeds, while the album-title font barely fails as an emetic agent. Also, the two lines running across the cat's feet: a scientific anomaly. |

Yah, this artwork is wretched. It looks like somebody fucked around with photoshop for a couple of hours. And yes, of course I'm gonna buy the album. But let me take a different spin on the argument. Since the FB&TC album, the artwork has been totally hack. Say what you will about Cult of Ray, but at least you can tell there was a legitimate art director to clean up the rough edges on that project. However, my theory is that this is all part of some kind of "crappy photoshop/clip-art chic" aesthetic that is too sophisticated for us to understand. Perhaps it's an artistic commentary that album packaging is a passe notion and in the age of downloadable music, the listener sometimes might not even know, or care, what the artwork, or even the musician, look like. And no...I don't actually believe this. |

I noticed a couple of you saying that CULT OF RAY was the last good artwork......
CULT OF RAY????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
WHAT THE FUCK?
That is the most heinous of Microsoft Paint covers I have ever seen. One retarded image cut and pasted.
CULT OF RAY? That was the WORST artwork in the history of albums.
CULT OF RAY? I could do better with a blindfold and an optical mouse.
CULT OF RAY? Even the toy indian cover was better.
CULT OF RAY? I would rather he used the "Dogs Playing Poker" masterpiece.
CULT OF RAY? The awkward teenage stage of the Catholics, before they bloomed into handsome young band on FB&TC's.
CULT OF RAY? The record that turned every Pixie fan off of Frank Black for good. (Not really but almost)
CULT OF RAY? YUCK. |

Cult of Ray was what convinced me on Frank's solo work, it was rockin' and accessible...Teenager was interesting, but too "laid back" for me in my younger days. (and stupider days) |

I'm looking at it now, and COR is not a great peice of design but I think that face has a lovely sort of naivete and crispness about it (along the lines of Paul Klee, hee hee). Bullshit aside, it is soo much better even then the toy Indians, it's simplicty is it saving point, especially the fold out poster of the face. I've had that sticker on my diskman for seven years even though it skips like fuck now and is unlistenalble i still love that smiling face!

my intuition has it that it is a pure frank & caths production -nuffsaid -the title will lie ... and... -sell units -not sell units -mean something -not mean anything the fact that people spend on crap units offered on radio shows that maybe it IS better to be identified with not selling units.

Alright, I've decided that the new cover is the "Anti-Frank Black (tm)". Everyone knows that all art/music (they're one and the same) created by Frank Black grows on you as you hear it (or see it). However, in the case of this artwork, I dislike it more every time I look at it. I may have to touch it up in Photoshop myself just so that I can stand to look at the cover once I buy it. Or maybe I'll just put a Post-it on the jewel case with "Show Me Your Tears" in my semi-legible scrawl, covering as much of the cover as possible.
On the bright side, while I'm also not a fan of Show Me Your Tears (especially vs. Madams at Nine) as a name, it is growing on me slightly. At least I'm assured that the music will continue to be as phenomenal as it has ever been. |

Frankly (if you see a pun, run with it, if not, fine), I like the artwork for "Show Me Your Tears". It reminds me of Vegas, and obviously the band was going for that with the luck theme. Anyone who has a problem with this cover is simply being catty (yes, this time the pun is wholeheartedly intended). I find it unique compared to all other FB&C covers. And, of course, each album has been unique in its artwork, so why the controversy? I really don't understand why there is so much hubbub over this.

I don't mind the idea of the cover, but it was clearly put together rather haphazardly - the cat and the way the edges are, and worse still, the two strings that didn't get airbrushed from the bottom of the cat. These are flaws that even me, an amateur at any form of graphic design (and this is being generous) would not release as an album cover.
Other than that, no controversy, just some like it and some don't. There's bound to be more than one side to any opinion, unless we're all mindless drones. |

Okay guys (and gals)...I am new here but go all the way back to the days of the Black Francis. And the beautiful phoenix who is Frank Black has ALWAYS, in my opinion, had a keen eye for poor album art. But isnt that one of the things that makes him so wonderful? Sure, the sideways shot of the resovoir is an eyebrow-raiser...sure, the red feathers (?) make no sense...sure, the man and his Catholics on the rocks is cheesey...sure, the bullet holes in the road sign are fake...sure, the cosmic indian is slightly sickening (in a brown mustard and sour-kraut sorta way)...sure, the Cult of Ray takes the cake...sure, the TEENAGER may be the best artwork...sure, the 'hills in sunburst' made us all go 'huh?' in 1993...
Is my point getting across? I think I may be saying:
SURE, THE DAMN CAT MATTED OVER THE STEEL PEDAL IS A BIZARRE CHOICE AND THE FONT LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING OFF OF A BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY BOOTLEG...
BUT WHO CARES? I think once again Frank may have the last laugh. Look how much energy has been spent on a CD cover! I like it! It's as wonderful and quirky as the music itself. It reminds me of the special effects from the original Star Trek...the worst, yet the best! I've heard a handful of the songs off Give Me Your Tears last month at a show in LOS Angeles...and I can't wait for the album! |

ha, good first post.
I think some of this has to do with it being 'new'. I mean, lots of people harken back to FB self-titled when they comment on best album artwork but if he released an album now with "frank black!" and some orange stripes on the cover, you guys would be panning the bejesus out of it.
