Theres a small, half page interview with Frank in Septembers (and its not even august yet!) Maxim. dont know if it appears in the US edition though. The interview just asks him about his album, Pixies (if there will be a reunion etc) and Frank actually says that "if you put most of the Pixies lyrics on paper, they dont look very impressive" or words to that effect !

Maxim has always had a soft spot for Frank (and a hard spot for just about every even remotely attractive female). Dog in the Sand was one of their top 10 albums of the year for 2001.

If people are going to mention these articles in passing - can you just transcribe it or link to it or something? It just seems like a tease to other people (possibly abroad, etc.) who don't have access. |

i would beg to differ JamesM, and say that Maxim consistently has only top quality women explolited in it's magazine.. not just the "remotely attractive".. |

Frank Black "The former Pixies front man returns to the planet of sound"
You've been quoted as saying that there isn't "one happy song" on your new album Show Me Your Tears. Why so downbeat?
I've recently become a little more open via therepy, I suppose, and I was going through a lot of shit when I was making that album. It was one of the few times in my life when I was able to connect with what was going on inside me
Did writing about those kind of feelings come easily?
I never found it difficult to write the songs - as soon as my mind is in that space I can write quickly.
How has your music changed since your split with the Pixies?
I'm very proud of what the Pixies were able to do, and as the band's songwriter, I think that many of those songs were really good. But a lot of the tunes, when you strip them down to say, vocals and guitar, the flaws in the songs come out a lot.
Do you still play any Pixies songs live?
Yeah, the ones I'm able to get behind still. There are probably about seven or eight that I play. Out of five or six albums that we made there's probably about an album's worth of songs that I could really say, 'These are the ones.'
What is your favourite Pixies song?
Probably 'Gouge Away' - its very indicative of the kind of music the Pixies played. It's very simple and its good minimalist lyric that is also a bit abstract. When you look at a lot of Pixies lyrics on paper, I dont think many of them are that great.
Any chance of a Pixies reunion?
I get a little bit tempted, but I fear that it just wouldnt be as good as it used to be. Its a lot to do with my own pride, because the Pixies are the mark I'm judged by,so i'm refusing to give in and say 'that's as good as i'll get'. It might even be what drives me to continue being a performer.

And the interviewer asked 'do you still play Pixies songs live?' You'd think that they'd have done a little research before the interview which would have eliminated a very pointless Pixies question, and would have given space to maybe a more worthwhile one.

The issue is not what the interviewer knows; it's what the audience knows. Maybe a Maxim reader wants to know whether Frank Black still plays Pixies songs and that's why the question is asked. They're not trying to break new ground. |

Actually, I have to admit I liked the interview. The questions weren't the best, but Frank gave thoughtful answers. I must be so tired I'm brain dead. |

Yeah, the interview is actually quite good. They ask him Pixies-related questions but in a genuine way; it's not like they're saying "so, are you playing Pixies songs now because your solo albums don't have any success?". Now, that headline ("The former Pixies front man returns to the planet of sound") TRULY sucks.

It would have made a lot more sense to ask what his favorite Catholics song was or his favorite song off the new record than his favorite Pixies song. |

It's hard to function on a day-to-day basis, knowing there is someone so righteous as FB out there, rocking the world and the world has no idea it's being rocked. Thanks for the transcription. |

yeah, what do you expect from fucking Maxim? If they were interviewing some reknown beer brewer, a race car driver, or a porn director, the interview would have had one hundred times more depth.
on the flipside, Maxim Blender is probably one of my favorite popular music mags out these days...sure, they cover a lot of crap but they also seem to touch upon stuff that is not quite in the mainstream media's radar either (when compared to drivel like RS and Spin.) Maybe they should have gotten someone from the Blender department who actually knows their shit to interview Frank instead of some Maxim jock fuckhead. |

The interview was good. People have to remember that other than the couple thousand Frank Black fans that exist, the majority of people have no clue...and moreso, people 30 years old and above, unless they are PIXIES fans, have no recollection of the group! Maybe they remember Here Comes Your Man...maybe...but other than that, we're it! So the interview was constructed PERFECTLY. What it does is promote Frank through the past. Someone will read it and think...hmmm...PIXIES...I think I remember them...and then they may go out for nostalgia and buy Doolittle or Bossanova. Then after having fun with the past rediscovering through hazy recollection, maybe they'll go out and buy SHOW ME YOUR TEARS on September 8. I dunno...maybe I'm all whack. But it was a very intelligent blurb, that interview.

personally i think its a good feature mainly because it gives publicity to his new album - a bit like Brian said - people may not really have heard of his solo stuff and be tempted. Better than an interview in NME where they ask him all the right questions then print utter nonsense and slag off SMYT

the only line that startled me was when frank said:
"Its a lot to do with my own pride, because the Pixies are the mark I'm judged by,so i'm refusing to give in and say 'that's as good as i'll get'. It might even be what drives me to continue being a performer."
what?, fair enough if that drives him forward all the time making him create more records, but hell, that was then, death to the pixies, great but gone, and look at the material since that point, i really feel it eclipses what has happenned previously, i know a hell of a lot of you agree.... maybe its a blessing to be underground and not at all in the mainstream, bollocks to the "pixies are great, franks solo & catholics stuff is shit" people, they were worth weeding out, all incarnations of frank are amazing, and I wish that man knew how much respect he has all over the world for ALL of his work.
I never ever thought that any writer would surpass my usual top writers ever list.... Paul Simon, Freddie Mercury, Lennon & McCartney, the Doors, .... and I was suprised, after finding the breeders / nirvana / pearl jam / etc etc etc, i found frank at the "teenager" stage, and was completely blown away, as he was writing, and had written in the style I always wanted to, but better than I could had hoped for, after following his consistent flurry of material over the years, i couldn't do anything but have the upmost and highest respect for his writing, and I will be suprised if another candidate comes even close to surpassing his standard.
(i'm off my soap-box now!), and apologies if any of that came over the wrong way.
