the self titled ablum had really good photos of frank. my favourite is when he is dressed as a farmer in his dunagrees and little hat. he looks deranged in all of them- what could be more perfect?

I thought a lot of the controversy was over the title, and not the cover art. Erebus's rants about how the very syllables "Showww-Mee-Yourrr-Tearssss" will turn off the Clay Aiken market that Frank's always tried so hard to break into.
I believe Erebus pointed out that album titles that start and end with the letter 'S' have, historically, never "moved units".
It's been awhile since I've looked through this thread though.

My rants were over the sentiment, not the phonetics. Given Frank's comments, at Cooking Vinyl I believe, it would seem the invocation of emotiveness might stem from his sessions in therapy. But that's just a guess. |

Oh please give us more of your dime store psychology attempts, they're so fascinating, Erebus. |

Dime store? Here's the quote, infant:
"Also, I've been going to therapy. Take out your big knife, doc, and split me right down the middle of my chest, from my neck to my belly. See my heart muscle right here? Pumping and full of electricity. Take that knife and split my skull open. See the brain about to explode? The doctor said I'm not interested in your damn brain; you got a big broken heart? Big deal. I'm not interested in your heart, SHOW ME YOUR TEARS! And so here they are. Thirteen big, salty tears." |

So I just checked out that cover. I'd bet this is just a pre-release draft. Sure it will be same, but the CD's art probably would be cleaned up a bit. Just shrinking it to actual size helps as well. Notice how the cat is poised ready to strike down upon the heart, that relates to the title quite well I thought. As most of you have posted, FB's cover art is OK but not great, and we all know it's what's inside that counts. Sure he could pay Vaughn Oliver or somebody a ton of dough for what? If Bossanova sucked would you still buy it because of the great cover? DITS has a good art, and I find nothing wrong with 'Pistolero' either.

True, artwork has very little (none) bearing on the quality of music. Love or hate the cover for Tears, the record is simply amazing. Having said that, good album art is important in it's own right. It can't save a bad record, or ruin a good record, but in the end it is a part of the package, and really good art adds to the whole experience of the album. Check out Resonant Frequencey #21 on http://www.pitchforkmedia.com for an article on how much really good or interesting album art can do for someone. If it looks like a lot of thought went into the album art, that someone cared enough to spend a lot of time with it, one assumes the same about the music inside. I love all of Vaughan Oliver's work on the Pixies records, there was an artist creating something. And the art always went perfectly with the feel of the record. It's kind of the opposite of movies, where a score is written based on the content and images of the film. Here, the images are created based on the music. |

Maybe "Show me your Tears" is really just a stab at some of the false relationships people have with other people.
It might mean that very few people could ever show you their tears because they have never shed any for you.
Or,it could be what surviving family members in the Santa Clara Valley asked William Mullholland when he said " I envy the Dead "
Or, it could be what Robert Onion asked me tonight in the kitchen as I was chopping him up on the cutting board.
I am fine with the title.
I can honestly say I have not looked forward to an album being released like this for a long time. Really never that I can recall.

Erebus, I didn't question that quote. I have seen that quote.
I was making fun of your "the invocation of emotiveness might stem from his sessions in therapy."
And I still am.
But I might add that you called me an infant into the list of weird ass non sensical things you say on these boards.
Got any more brilliant remarks to make fun of? |

FIrst of all, I don't feel like ever fighting again ever after hearing this album.
Fuck it. Fuck the cover, fuck the title, it doesn't matter because this is the best album he has put out since I first heard his first solo album.
Now as a hard core fan, I'm gonna love itall, but I am seriously telling you all, it won't even matter once you get your head wrapped around this record and this record wrapped around your head.
All I want to do is sing these songs all the time.
And you will too and this weird petty argument about the title and cover art will seem like some bad dream from eating some wrong blue cheese or something.
This album is a comfortable blanket on a cold day.
I love it so. |

I'm quite sure I'm gonna love the cd. But it wouldn't hurt if the artwork reflected the qualities of the music. It seemes to me FB just stopped caring about these things. Ok, it's not as important as making good music, but it would be the cherry on the pie. All the covers since teenager have this shitty amateuristic look. In these mp3 times you just HAVE to care about the artwork! |

It gets kinda confusing when people appear to be attacking others (EREBUS) based largely on posts from other areas of the site. I'm not familiar with Erebus' other posts in general, but ya'll (SWIMMER!) are wound up tight over what seems like very little. I think it's like when the opinion is inconsistent with ours, we find it much easier to think the guy expressing it is stupid. But his posts have scarcely been illogical, and have certainly not been ridiculous. He just has an apparently "controversial" and unpopular opinion.
I like the point the one person made about how the album art could be yet another component of Frank's M. O. I don't agree, just because it's hard to believe that the BLD art is terrible enough to be clearly halfassed. Also, not that Frank is the purist of purists, but hiring someone--or a firm or something--to do your artwork is a lot more up the alley of the big record companies and the idea of H-Y-P-E-R-P-R-O-D-U-C-T-I-O-N. I mean he doesn't hire session musicians to replace the real ones, nor does he employ a "crew" for his live act, nor does he do a lot of the costlier, shinier things that rock stars usually do. So the album art might just be another one of those low-budget, "get the damn record out already," moves, consistent with other Frank Black things. I understand that artwork is not necessarily something that any musician normally messes with, so I know it's not the same category, but Frank's actions in the last few years seem to reflect a desire to eliminate all middlemen.
I think if he really could get away with it, and still tour and all that, he would make a record every few months, burn a master to CD-R, type off the tracklist, drop it off at an all-in-one printing fullfillment place, and post a link to some online shopping cart where he could take orders, and have his wife (kind of like Joey Santiago's does) handle the shipments while he's away. So maybe this Spinart channel and stinky artwork are just the next best thing.
---------------------- Ok, I hope I don't screw this one up: "Jeffrey Jones, Roman Polanski, Pete Townshend, and James Randi walk into a kindergarten . . ." |

I agree. It's part of his attitude towards the music industry. But still, I think loads of fans would be proud making better cover-art for his albums, and do it for free. I know I would. Are you listening, Frank? |

Why am I being singled out? It's because you're jealous of me isn't it?

I know by now that my opinion makes no difference, but I'm okay w. the title, just not the cover art. I think the covers of BLD and DW were wonderful. |

I'm sure nobody's gonna like me for this, but here's what I gather. Frank's wife was actually mostly responsible for recent covers. On another thread somebody mentions that the design of the covers is credited to her pseudonym. Somebody correct me if I am wrong.
So...if they are divorced, perhaps art duties will be handled by a professional? |

covers are fairly un-important surely? some of the greatest albums ever had the shittiest covers ever, dont judge a book by its cover and all that.
and the title?.......ditto!
