much to my shame i bought the nme this week as i was sure that there would be a review of franks fantastic underworld gig.
as it happens there was no review, but this may be a good thing as the cunts at the nme have no taste. anyway despite there not being a review there was a small piece where frank spoke about the 10 songs that he would burn. unfortunatly, i left it on the train so i can't remember the whole list, it did feature iggy pop, neil young, beatles, bob dylan and elliott smith. sorry i can't remember more but check it out.

frank also put a picture of a women named violet on the front of his cd saying that he had met her 4 months ago and they had become very close.
i hate to speculate on the big mans marital status but maybe this is the inspiration for his recent spate of break up songs.

I'm sorry, I'm UK clueless but what is the "nme"? A magazine?

As for his marital status, Frank said he was divorced in a recent radio interview.

guaranteed....the nme will :
review SMYT and give it 4 or 5 out of 10 (if they review it at all...)
compare any FB gigs they review (if ever !) to the pixies and say he's past his best...they've done that as far back as I've been a FB fan (since he started solo)

i don't think the nme have reviewed any frank album since teenager, but rest assured if they do they will say its crap, because they only like new bands or dead bands. they may also say that bossanova and trompe were bad, which will really make me angry.

i hate NME. they are a group of people who truly believe their own bullshit. example - the strokes. anyone over here will now that that foul publication basically put them on a pedestal - as for FB reviews they only gave dog an average review which just shows how crap the magazine is. mojo or Q are far superior.

Is your work done? Are all pigs fed, watered and ready to fly?....

Gracie, I've never heard a girl call anyone a cunt before. It reminded me of Larry David on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm calling someone that and basically being blacklisted from a whole group of people for really no reason. Thanks for the laugh!

the funny thing is that nme is laid out like a gossip magazine. they even have a 'seperated at birth' column which shows the 'resemblance' between rock musicians and other celebrities, fer god's sake!

bored of the little comments. i guess i'll just have an actual signature. much shorter.

Not a magazine, a glorified piece of shitrole with usually irrelevant writing on it, as as Gracie quite rightly says it is written by cunts (I like your style Gracie). Saying that I am sure they gave the first FB&C album a good review, as well as DITS.... but that doesn't make it a good magazine.

Gary13th, your predictions are true, thats exactly what will happen....

Maybe that gives us a clue why SMYT is a sad album.... if what Frank says is true.

i wish they'd give him a break. i used to read the NME in the early 90s but after a while got disillusioned with it. you knew weeks before an album (by any artist) was released whether they'd give it a good review or not, depending on how they worded any news or features on said band/artist.

I think I might even feel bad for these reviewers. What sad pathetic lives they must have to not be able to enjoy anything. It seems they have not reviewed the Catholics stuff. Is that maybe for fear of enjoyment? Sad pathetic geeks.

Fair enough if an album is bad then give it a shit review, but with NME it seems to be a trend just to piss on more established and older musicians, whilst praising shit like the Strokes (and they are over rated crap), Slipknot etc etc. It could also be that they have only taken the time to listen to Franks material once or twice, which is never enough if you ask me..... but then music reviewers should know that the best music takes time to sink in.

NME is best used to wipe you arse with at Uni when you run out of toilet paper and people are bitching about getting some more because they bought it the last time. But then you've got to go through the embarrassment of buying the rag in the first place.

I don't really mean to pry into Frank's life, but I was wondering if anyone can confirm this? How long ago did it happen, if at all?

One of my favorite albums of all time is Electro-Shock Blues by the Eels. It's a very, very sad album. And while I was totally in love with it from the start, I didn't find out until much later that E's (the frontman) sister had committed suicide shortly before the recording of this album began, and that his mother was dying of cancer as well (and she did, shortly after the album came out). Suddenly the entire album took on a different meaning; I realized that certain songs were about his sister and mother, and I was speechless.

Uh...anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that learning the real-life motivations behind artist's songs can increase their awe. Black Letter Days and Show Me Your Tears are both very sad, break-up-songs-aplenty albums. If Frank and Jean were divorced before the recording of those albums, then that explains so much.

If they're not divorced, then I will shut up.

I downloaded this video of Mark E Smith winning the NME godlike genius award, which he didn't know was going to happen. He got caught off guard and stumbled up to the podium, held the award in his hands then said "the only real achievment hear is the people who can read NME cover to cover" then dropped it and walked off.

okay, i bought the damn nme for their stupid 'Burn it!' compilation tape column with frank in it. okay, the cover he chose is "a photo of a girl i met about four months ago called Violet. i'm putting her on the cover as she's someone i've grown very close to". this obviously means he was divorced before he met her, or violet broke 'em up. i dunno. anyway, she looks a little like minnie driver, and has short brown hair, and for some reason she's reading a winnie the pooh book. okay, on to the songs...

FB talks briefly about his marital status in an interview at:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/artists/pixies.shtml

He talks about it in spanish ("...estoy devorciado..."). Also included are live versions of "Manitoba" and "My favorite Kiss".

Also included are audio snippets of Joey, David and Kim talking about early Pixies and the break-up. I'm still trying to find out the date of the interview. Does anyone know when it took place?

the NME has always been a shitty little rag, tied in with the so-called "alternative scene" which should really be called the "alternative and highly mainstream scene"......the only time you'll see a decent mention of frank black is when another musician name drops him in an interview....weezer, foofighters, etc etc etc (yawn)
it's a sad little mag with the all the hallmarks of school toilet paper, you only read it when you want to feel really pissed off with the state of the UK music industry.....and yeah, I f***ing hate it!

- was smashed head on by a giant truck :( - Chris
