You are correct. Moe IS the best. She was always and still remains the true heart of the VU.

She was going to produce one of my bands' debut album, but a couple of the guys have pretty hardcore drinking problems, and after all her years of dealing with Lou and company, her one stipulation was that everybody be relatively straight for the sessions. I knew that was an impossible accommodation for those lifelong lushes to handle, so I had to decline the offer, and I've regretted it since that day.

However, she is without a doubt one of the most sincere, unaffected and disarmingly "real" people I have ever met, as well as being a self-taught musician of almost incomprehensible talent and drive.

Plus, she's got a great laugh and a beautiful smile.

1. Nina Simone and Piano
2. Jim White – No Such Place
3. Kinky Friedman – Sold American
4. Bob Dylan – Blonde on Blonde
5. Serge Gainsbourg – Histoire Du Melody Nelson
6. Blondie – Parallel Lines
7. Pulp – His & Hers
8. The Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen
9. Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds – The Boatman’s Call
10. Throwing Muses NEW THROWING MUSES ALBUMN

God that was strange. Choosing not to stick Frank or The Breeders or Belly or Kristin Hersh or Tanya Donelly on there is really strange.

But those are records that all happen to be perrennial faves that I go back to time over time; so there must be something there - and I think I can say that EVERYONE should own at least one Nina Simone record and for my money its always and piano...

I've been listening to Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" a lot lately. It's a very good album...it's my first soul album, but it is fuckin excellent. It flows together...it's very good. I suggest everyone check it out.

You can learn so much about someone from what they listen to for pleasure.

This is a GREAT thread and I hope people keep adding to it for ever and ever.

I used to have the Leonard Cohen album that was mentioned (a Phil Spector production if I'm not mistaken). I finally had to trade it in as it was a bit too drunk up for me. Plus I couldn't really hear Dylan at all, could you?

Now, "The Future" is a Cohen album I really like, even though most think it's crap.

Someone mentioned the New Zealand Dylan anthology "Masterpieces". What an odd choice... Do you have the old 3-LP gatefold with the big booklet or the reissued 3-CD set without?

Bob Mould - Workbook
Fred Ho - Underground Railroad to My Heart
They Might Be Giants - John Henry
Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic
Neutral Milk Hotel - Aeroplane O'er the Sea
Interpol - Interpol
Throwing Muses - House Tornado
Whiskeytown - Pneumonia
Danielson Famile - A Prayer for Every Hour

These are several recent and all time faves... I attempted to omit stuff that everybody already knows about or owns. SUPPORT INDY LABELS AND MUSICIANS AND YOUR FAVORITE HOLE IN THE WALL THAT BRINGS THEM AND BEER TO YOU! GO SEE LIVE SHOWS! THIS is how you discover truly great musicians and art.
Which would you rather see.... Frank Black and the Cs at a huge European festival OR The Pixies at Stache's (or other 100 - 200 person bar) during the days of Surfer Rosa?
Although both would be excellent, I think the answere is quite obvious... GOOD MUSIC IS STILL OUT THERE.... ARE YOU?

I agree completely with the above statement! Nothing is better than seeing some band/artist that you never heard of before and then watch them grow as they gain a following! Live music is always a great evening out, and an even better chance too meet people.

Greg - Hey, thanks for the holler on SUPPORT THE INDIES! I'm turning 32 this year also and hear an awful lot of people my age who love music say "gee, there's really not much out there... it's not like it was back in the day (meaning 80s, early 90s)"... They're off. There's as much good music now as there has ever been, there's just more to wade through given all of the latest advances in technologies.
I've been seeing the White Stripes play a few times a year for the past 3 years at small bars, right before they blew up in popularity. Who turned me on to them? No one. I went to see a show one night and the White Stripes opened the show. They rocked, and I looked for their name in the paper to see them again whenever they came through town... now I don't really have a chance to see them play small venues anymore, which I know some people would give their right arm to do. How often do you hear about those "lucky" people who got to see some smokin' hot shows back in the day? Well, those people aren't lucky.... they're just persistant fans of music. I've probably seen 1000 shows in my day, and those 100 out of a grand that are phenomenal, really make it all worthwhile. I don't bitch about lame shows or local scenes. You gotta go make your own. It's the same concept as what people say about politics... "if you don't vote, you can't complain". (Well, you CAN complain, but your not part of the solution that way).
Anyhow bro, it's good to see that there are people out there feelin' me on that.
*I saw the Pixies back in the day... and when they sang about a ranch they call number fifty one, I KNEW that I was in the midst of true greatness. They DEFINITELY fall into my top 10 live shows.

I don't think it is. It wasn't just Frank that we liked about the Pixies and there's no reason why we have to take sides.

A few great albums I haven't seen listed here:

Springsteen - Nebraska
Beck - Mutations
X - Los Angeles/Wild Gift
Coltrane - Giant Steps
Miles Davis - Birth of the Cool
Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners
Art Blakey - Moanin' (kicks ass)

Well tonight I think I will go out and support the music scene in my city. Who to go see? I don't know, maybe I will go out and see this Frank Black and the Catholics gig.
Truth be told, I woke up out a guiness induced stupor, 9:15 on a Saturday morning and was probably one of the first people in Winnipeg with tickets!!
It also occurs to me that I haven't put in my two cents worth on classic albums, so here goes...
(In no particular order, subject to change at a moments notice)
1. The Beatles: Abbey road
2. David Bowie: Let's Dance
3. The Clash: London Calling
4. The Tragically Hip: Up To Here (Canadian music at its house party best)
5. The Red Hot Chili Peppers: Blood Sugar Sex Magic
6. The Breeders: Last Splash
7. Iron Maiden: Piece Of Mind (my junior high guitar heroes)
8. Bettie Serveert: Private Suit (check the link on my profile)
9. The Clash: Sandinista
10.Duke Ellington: Far East Suite

I'm late in the game here, and so many of my essential favorites have already been listed that instead I am going to post my top ten best CDs for kicking out those winter blahs. 1. Dead Milkmen: Beelzebubba
2. Louis Jordan: Let the Good Times Roll (1938-1954)
3. Southern Culture on the Skids: Dirt Track Date
4. Slim Whitman: Vintage Collection
5. The Cramps: Stay Sick
6. Elvis Presley: The Sun Sessions
7. Jonathan Richman: Jonathan Goes Country
8. Voodoo Jive: The Best of Screamin' Jay Hawkins
9. The Rev. Horton Heat: Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em
10. Wanda Jackson: Rockin' in the Country (Best of)

a story for mr. radiator, who is an alex chilton fan:

a friend of mine, who owns an independent record show in my home state of New Jersey, used to play in Chilton's post-Big Star band. this was in the era where he was playing CBJBs and opening up for the likes of Talking Heads and Blondie. my friend, Lloyd Fonoroff, used to play drums for Chilton back then, and if you have any chilton bootleggs or demos from that era, chances are you might be hearing Lloyd. He went on to play in a band called Paranoise, that released two albums in the late 80s/early 90s. He's a really cool guy and has some great stories about that era.

I have a few tracks from CBGB's in 1978, around the time of the belated PVC release of Sister Lovers. Raw and weird stuff.

My friend Tim Lee from The Windbreakers (I know, I know, terrible/great name for a band) played for a while with Chilton during the mid-1980s and had some strange tales to tell as well.

There's a great bootleg 2-disc Chilton set from a 1990 trio show called "Fuck Everybody" that's a must for fans of his surly, stoned live gigs. Let me know if you or your friend would like a copy and I'd be happy to make you one.
