With all the talk over poor Frankie's questionable album artwork, I was thinking we could list some great albums with truly heinous covers.
1. The Idiot--Iggy Pop. God, first of all, I never want to see someone in tight jeans shirtless, it just doesn't work. Every Iggy Pop album cover has been horrid, but this one is the worst. 2. Every Lou Reed album after around 1975..they're all just him in shades. 3. Velvet Underground: Loaded. From Andy Warhol's Banana to this cheesy early 70's phsychedelic thing? |

FB and the C's is a great album with pretty shitty artwork. VU's "Loaded" artwork is great. Sorry. Angst's "Mending Wall" is a great album with pretty ridiculous artwork. -VERY- 80's. It's a picture of a "third-worldian" kid holding a goat - with neon orange, blue and purple faux paint splatters behind it. Very cheesy.

Husker Du's "Zen Arcade" has a pretty shitty cover, although it is a pretty decent album. I don't dig the whole 80's 'wild graffiti' look....it comes of as very dated and just stupid-looking in general. |

I second Zen Arcade, and New Day Rising has a horrible photo of some dogs and a sunrise/sunset (SST did such horrible design for them, all paisly and muti-coloured splash effect stuff, yuk!). Clinic's, Internal Wrangler, also looks terrible, very 80's.

I like the covers to BLD and Workshop, especially BLD. I don't see what's so bad about em? They have a certain aesthetic to them that fits with the music quite well IMO. Dog In the Sand had a really cool cover. Pistolero was cool as well. Even the ST Catholics record, the artwork tied in well with the new musical direction....really stripped down, simple. It worked. I guess if I had to pick a least fave FB album cover, I guess it would "Cult Of Ray"....something about that one just never clicked with me.
As for other records with good music/bad covers...hmmmm....I dunno....Im a metalhead/old school rocker for the most part and metal albums (especially in the era of metal I grew up with) generally tended to have some of the greatest album art. Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate, Thin Lizzy...I always like those album covers quite a bit. I guess Ween's "White Pepper" is a bit dull, but still...it worked somehow. Kiss "Carnival Of Souls" is an album I like quite a bit that has an ultra shitty boring cover. I never was too hot on most of the Replacements album covers. Rush's debut is kinda bleh. |

I agree that Iggy Pop's covers tend to be fairly bad but one that I do like is the cover of 'The Idiot'.
I read somewhere that it's actually a pastiche of a piece of art by a group of German expressionists called 'Die Brucke'...they were a bunch of artists that amongst other things were interested in the relationship between sanity and art.
The pose (presumably of both the original and Iggy on the front-cover) is allegedly supposed to imitate the awkward angular poses of catatonic-style schizophrenics. |

The Teardrop Explodes released a goodish album entitled Kilimanjaro. Julian cope described seeing the first copies of the sleeve thus (a rancid photo of the band): "Jesus, this is the worst fucking album cover I have ever seen". In that it was his band this speaks volumes.
After a few months sales were poor. A hit single followed - the album was released with a new cover, and all was well. My brother still has the original sleeve. God, it is rank.

Good point, every SST cover for a Husker Du album I've seen looks pretty much just as horrid as Zen Arcade. Whoever concocted that "look" should be shot.
And I second Clinic's "internal wrangler"....it's worse and far more 80's looking than even the Husker Du covers! And yet Clinic are great. Go figure. |

I liked the cover for Internal Wrangler. Sure, it is very 80s, but not in a bad way, in my opinion. It's retro chic without being annoying, and doesn't have any of the cringe inducing elements of most of 80s style. After all, it's just words. |

Yeah, when I first encountered that cover on Audiogalaxy or Kazaa (i can't remember) I thought it was one of those mis-credited mistake MP3s...i was like "HA, yeah right! Radiohead covering Rhinestone Cowboy my ass." Then I downloaded it......rude awakening
Actually, I think its comedic value is the only thing about it that appeals to me. |

All very well Mr Speedy M, but I think looks cheesey and dosn't suit the band (thier not very retro or chic), I like to turn the cover inside out and use the inlay as the cover Still a great album though.

i know a lot of people diss frank's album covers, but the only one that i really dislike is "cult of ray." ironically, i have a huge poster with that artwork on it in my bedroom (it was the only frank poster i could find).
i really dont activley dislike too many album covers. however, sonic youth's "a thousand leaves" was absolutely hideous.

Sorry to take so long responding mate, I must have missed this one. You know, the cover for internal wrangler is an homage (or simply direct rip off of) to an old (jazz, I think) record by someone who's name I completely forget? I kept seeing it at this one record store on vinyl, and I would only glance at it, assuming it was internal wrangler, but an import from a non-enlgish speaking country and it was translated for some reason. But I actually looked at it the other day and it is indeed an old record by someone totally unrelated to Clinic. The only other cover art homage I've seen like that is Soul Asylum doing the Herp Alber thing back in the day. Anyone know of anymore cover art copies? |

Ash's 1977 - ok, a good album rather than a great one, but the cover sucks. Pet Sounds - godawful literalism. Muse's Showbiz was fairly bad.
