with Bowie it gets pretty confusing, he has so many compilation albums with the same songs over and over. Actually one of my goals in life is to collect every Bowie compilation ever, just to see how many there really is. But yes its one of my faves. Bazza, do you know which album London Bye ta ta is originally on? |

I'm suprised that no one has mentioned Roxy Music under this topic. A crucial band, that pioneered the way for most of the others I see listed. Edgy, noisy glam-rock bliss if anyone needs something challenging out of the past to pick up on. I'd pick up there self-titled, Country Life, and For Your Pleasure first, and then move on to others. I don't know if FB himself is a fan, he's mentioned Bowie so much from the same period, but if you listen to the weirdness of Roxy you can't help but understand how they paved the way for the pixies, especially in the chord-progression realm, as well as production similarities to FB's two solo albums.

Damnit, now you got me all thinking about Bowie. I always think of a good username after the fact. I should have been QueenBitch. Its not Pixies tune but it would've been cool nonetheless.

I agree, and you may be interested to know that Frank and The Catholics covered the Roxy tune "Remake/Remodel" a few years back. It appeared as a B-side on a European CD maxi-single.

Have you guys heard Bowie's cover of Cactus? I am wholly sure it got the thumbs up from Frank - esp. since its easily as good as the original...

Well, if you're just starting: This Year's Model Armed Forces My Aim is True Get Happy! Blood and Chocolate When I Was Cruel Trust The Rest is better than 90% of anything else, and comes in close to those select 7. In fact, I'm going to go listen to them now, in order.

Has anybody mentionned the Rocky IV soundtrack??? If you're a overweight and want to lose some then buy this album, it'll have you running up mountains, lifting all manner of weights and shadow boxing like no-one would believe. Definately essential listening back in 1986 when the film was released.

'London Bye Ta Ta' never made it onto an album - I think it might have been a b-side though I can't remember what the single was...
Stranded - Roxy Music Scary Monsters - David Bowie Trompe Le Monde - The Pixies Tilt - Scott Walker Dirty - Sonic Youth The Oliver Twist Manifesto - Luke Haines Tremble Under The Boom Lights - Jonathon Fire Eater Desire - Bob Dylan The Songs Of Nina Simone - Nina Simone Hurtzsprung-Russell - Scarla O' *
* Ok, you can't buy that one in the shops...

Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left Pulp - This is Hardcore The Beatles - White Album Simon & Garkunkel - Live From New York City, 1967 Phil Spector - Back to Mono The Beach Boys - Smile Neil Young - On the Beach Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg (self titled) The Ramones - We're Outta Here Tom Waits - Bone Machine
well, I would have added Georges Brassens' anthology, but I guess it only speaks to French speaking people...

Your post is the only one, where CALEXICO is mentioned. I wonder that it is the only message in the forum, mentioning this excellent band. I have to listen to your other favourites. Thanks for your advice |

I really liked the first cd from Marcy Playground, especially from track 6 and on. But I didn't really like too much else from them but that first album was fantastic. |

speedy m.
I did not count those two. Original Poster said not too mention F. Black, as that would be the obvious choice.
But, for you speedy...
My favorite pixies is a tie between Surfer Rosa & Bossonova My favorite F. Black is FBATC debute album.
(P.S. F. Black and the Pixies are 2 of only a hand-full of musicians in which I have every single major released album...for Pilgrim to BLD and DW, and everything in between.) |
