To all those from Ireland (and anyone else who'd like to respond), have you seen the Kevin Spacey movie "Ordinary Decent Criminal"? If so, what did you think? How was Kevin Spacey's (and all the american actors) Irish accent? I thought it sounded decent enough, but what do I know? Nothing. So tell me. |

i saw it, but i can't remember the accents. this is like in 'as time goes by'(i have too much time on my hands) where the guy wrote a script of him life and this crappy company were doin the film and all their accents are terrible(bad american actors trying to be 'british, what what!') but the producer explains they mightn'y think it represents the english accent, a pumpkin farmer in idaho would find it really realistic.

i saw it - its an ok film based on martin cahill but i wouldnt write home about it. kevin spacey is apparently a great guy - one of my friends who worked in a shop i used to work in made him a sandwich while filming ODC and had nothing but praise. really down to earth guy. as for irish accents in film - holy shit. put an END to this maddness NOW!!! look at tom cruise in 'far and away' and richard gere in 'jackal' - truly shite (allegedly). at least KS makes a semi decent effort. ah.. my daily rant. eases the pain.

Top o' the mornin' to ye, Barry. Meanwhile poor Sean Connery gets voted as the guy who puts on the worst accent of all time (e.g. Untouchables) - when he doesn't even seem to attempt to put on any accent at all. He even beat Dick Van Dyke's fabulous cockney accent. What about Mel Gibson as a Glaswegian Highlander in Braveheart? Or Richard Attenborough's Scottish burr in Jurassic Park?
What was it Tom Cruise said in Far and Away? "Sure, yer a corker so's ye are"

Kevin Spacey was supposed to be from Dublin, but he had an Northen Irish Leprecans accent, that film made me want to puck, The General was much better(though a totally different film, plus I love John Voight, even though his accent was shit as well!). Kate Blanchets accent in the new Orla Geran film sounds the best so far, at least she has some sort of qausi middle suburbian Dublin accent, instead of the fucked up hodge podge of accents they give actors in most other so called Irish films.

Kate Blanchett is British, right? She played and American southerner in "The Gift." Pulled it off well. |

Kate Blachett ain't british, right? Australian instead? Still, did a decent job in Elizabeth but apart from acting she's a dumb blonde:

I thought the Irish accents in 'Ordinary decent criminals' were appaling for the most part. Why did they have to use so many un-Irish actors??? It was nice seeing my old home town again though. Ahh happy memories. |

Thallasocrat, Kate's quote isn't necessarily oxymoronic - semites are those people who speak semitic languages (Arabs,Aramaeans, Jews and many Ethiopians). Her point could may well have been about the poor treatment of palestinians...(but equally might not have been).

Blown away? Is that the movie where Tommy Lee Jones shows that little kid how to fly a kite? I think I've seen a little bit of it and I do remeber his accent being appaling. What is it about the Irish accent that's so difficult for Americans? English and Irish actors always seem to manage the American accent okay, such as Helena Bonhem Carter in Fight Club or Colin Farell in that thing with Pacino. Then again Tim Roth's accent sucked serious ass in Reservoir Dogs. |

I thougth Tim Roth's accent in Reservoir Dogs was good! But then I'm Northern Irish, so what would I know. Sean Bean's accent in Ronin was fairly bad as far as I can remember. But the worst I can think of is Pete Postlethwaite in The Usual Suspects. He has a Japanese name and is made up with a kind of Oriental skin tone, but I couldn't figure out if he was really supposed to be Japanese at all!

Kevin Costners Southern (US) accent in JFK is pretty awful too, sometimes he has it and other times it's gone. For a lovely Scotish accent try John Hannah - mmmm, John Hannah....or our own Ten Percenter. I shall never forget him screaming in my ear "You're MISQUOTING ME!" |
