when i hear CRY BABY CRY, even though it's called "cry baby cry," it literally makes me want to cry.

"Sexy Sadie" is a masterpiece.
My daughter's middle name is after this song.

The drum sound on "Glass Onion" is choice.

I always wondered if the lead of Where is My Mind was inspired by the lead from 'Dear Prudence'....

My favourite Beatles album, one of my all time favourites too.

Why yes. I think you should discuss all of them. That's just my humble opinion tho.

Ah. The White Album ala Beatles. Does that mean we talk about Pet Sounds next?

Hey Bungalow Bill! I love the fact that this album is full of stupid songs, but its still ace.
And when the songs are beautiful, they're bee-yoo-tee-full.

Kind regards,

Yay!! Finally a Beatles related thread, though I'm sure there are more white albums. But it can't beat Beatles!! I mean Piggies!!! and Rocky Racoon, Wild Honey Pie *song Pixies covered*, Honey Pie rules too. Mother Nature's Son, I Will, Glass Onion, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Revolution 9 ha ha ha. Just goes to show what a Beatle whore I am. Can't get enough.

Oh and when will there be a Pet Sounds thread. I'd like to see that. soon. Go Brian you crazy wanna be surfer guy!!

In my defense... I'm just sayin'

I gravitate toward the Lennon and Harrison songs on this album. There are exceptions, of course. For instance, if I never hear Bungalow Bill again it'll be too soon-- Yoko's screeching is an assault on the senses I cannot bear. But Revolution, Glass Onion, Yer Blues, I'm So Tired, Sadie, Cry Baby Cry-- all fantastic. Ditto for Harrison's tracks, especially Piggies (great bridge!) and Savoy Truffle. Some of the McCartney tracks are just too cutesy (Honey Pie, Ob-La-Di).

Do any of you actually listen to Revolution 9 each time you play the album?

Helter Skelter is great. By the way, I found in HMV they're selling the vinyl with all the pretty pictures for £20, and the CD, without the large stuff (I'm assuming), for £30.

Here's my 1000th post:

I love this album. It was one of my very first LPs (Queen's News of the World was the first) and it was given to me by my dad. Since I had so few albums I use to play this one over and over. There's silly stuff on there that I probably wouldn't like except of nostaligia

So Tired - being such a geek I walked around many high school years with the lyrics to this song written on a scrap of paper, I no longer know why

Blackbird - McCartney can be a cheeseball, but he also can write some beautiful lyrics

Julia & Mother Nature's Son- ditto to the above

Helter Skelter - scary in a exciting way, the song would literally scare me as a kid "I got blisters on my fingers". I remember head banger friends being amazed that the Beatles would play such a song.

Is it my favorite Beatles LP? No, Revolver is probably my favorite.

Yeah who'd have thought it. The Beatles invented heavy metal.

The Beatles invented Psychadelic Rock, too, with Sgt. Peppers. Amazing how much they did. I love this album so much, my dad and I were listening to it in the car the other day. Brilliance.

When I was obsessed with the Beatles, I also became obsessed with anything connected to them. Therefore, I really got into studying the Charles Manson case since he was inspired by the lyrics of the White Album (especially Helter Skelter) to murder people. If you don't know, what he basically deciphered in the lyrics was that the Beatles were telling Manson specifically to kill rich white people in Hollywood and make it look like black people did it, and somehow this would lead to a war between the blacks and the whites, and the blacks would win since they are more prone and adapted to violence, but then they wouldn't have the skills to lead a society so they would come to Manson and his family in Death Valley at the ranch and then Manson would rule the world. Uhhhhh... crazy? Yes. It is interesting to read about all the reasons and connections Manson made with the lyrics. Like he had renamed one of his female followers Sadie before hearing the song Sexy Sadie, and had been a big fan of Revelation 9 from the Bible long before hearing Revolution 9. There's tons of lyrical connections, too. It's some sick shit, but I'm always kinda fascinated by that stuff.

has anyone noticed on Revolution when he says:

"but when you talk about destruction /
don't you know that you can count me out"

he actually says, "you can count me out (in)]"..

he says "in" right after "out". were they actually trying to send some sort of subliminal message that they actually are pro-destruction? :)

listen to it. it's at exactly :58 in.

"Julia" is one of the most emotional and beautiful songs ever written. Ditto for "Dear Prudence" ( a song about Mia Farrow's sister (who also went on the pilgrmage to see the Maharishi) that John wrote while in Rishikesh) (I love Paul's bass line). "Happiness is A Warm Gun" is a classic, which was originally 3 different songs which didn't stand well enough on their own, so John combined them into one. "Blackbird" is simplicity at it's most brilliant. I like the segue between "Bungalow Bill" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". "Yer Blues" kicks ass. "I'm so Tired" and "Sexy Sadie" ( a song about how the Maharishi was making advances on the women during their stay in Rishikesh) are among some of Lennon's best stuff. George's "Long, Long, Long" is an unfairly ignored classic. I like the sound of the acoustic guitar on this one. Paul played organ on it, as well. Story goes, he had a wine bottle on top of the organ which is what produced that deep humming sound. I also like "Why Don't We Do It In the Road?", even if most consider it a nonsense track. Paul also plays drums on "Back in the U.S.S.R." (and probably a few others), because Ringo had walked out prior to the recordings (he wanted to quit, but George and John swayed him back). Also, a lot of them weren't present during some sessions. For instance: Only Paul and Ringo play on "Why Don't We Do It In the Road?", and John was not present for the sessions of George's songs. "Yer Blues", however, was recorded live (I believe), with all members. Just a little trivia for you all. :)

All in all, awesome album. I own it on C.D. and vinyl (original 2nd press, sleeve O.K., vinyl has seen better days). I used to have the original photos of the members that came with the album from my father's copy. I'll have to look for them... :)

i listen to Number 9 sometimes too, because i'm weird.

i heard that the guy saying "number 9" is some kind of generic studio test thing that studios had in that era. a playback thing to check tones and levels and whatnot.

it's silly. but it does show some inspired experimentation (appropriate for the album)

the energy and inspiration level on this album is through the roof. i get the feeling that these guys were high the entire time making it (not on drugs either necessarily, but just.. on another plateau). the screams on Helter Skelter and Why Don't We Do It In The Road are insane.

Lennon said that he couldn't decide whether he was "in" or "out" when it came to destruction, so he decided to say both.

And yes, Lennon said he got the "number 9" from a tape of an engineer doing studio tests, and just liked the way he said "number 9." The number 9 was very meaningful to John Lennon for so many reasons, one being that his birthday is October 9 (and later his son Sean's birthday, too). I can't remember all the reasons, but there's plenty.

Lennon did two takes of Revolution 9. I wish they'd included the alternate version on the Anthology, but I imagine that's not a popular favorite. Would love to hear the super long version of Helter Skelter, too.
