Like most 16 years olds my daughters view of music is a very blinkered one sided one. She likes rock, but not old classic rock, but thats not what this thread is about.
She does not like in any way shape or form black music, black like barry white is not white like frank black is. For a while I have been putting a compilation together to broaden her horizons but I would appreciate some suggestions. Please then, suggest records, songs by black artists.

Thank you.

She doesn't likes only because they are black?
Did you tried James Brown? My son likes it, who doesn't?

black music means nothing to her, she lives in a house where soul and jazz has been played a lot and it meant nothing, it is of course mtv's fault, they have no problem playing interesting and diverse rock on the likes of mtv2 but mtv base play generic soul and hip hop, and that has unfortunately helped form her opinion.

Temptations? Any of the Mo-Town groups? Hmm...there's always good old fashioned blues. Don't forget the Funkadelic. They rocked. (I prefer Funkadelic to Parliament-Funkadelic, personally.)

There would be no Rock and Roll if it weren't for the blues and jazz created by the black men. They are rock's roots. The foundation.

Yeah, how about some John Lee Hooker or something along those lines?
Sly and the Family Stone I like, Hendrix, also how about some reggae or African music?

I don't know if this is relevant, but I guess 'rock' music has for so long been very much white dominated, how about some black rock, if I can phrase it that way. I'm not neccessarily thinking Living Colour, but Bad Brains spring to mind, and current bands like Bloc Party and TV On The Radio.

I second the TV on the Radio nomination. If you are trying to meet her halfway, perhaps it would be best to try and introduce her to more modern rock performed by black musicians like these guys.

Public Enemy. NWA.

Go straight for the jugular!

Seriously though, probably only time will be able to change her attitude, and even that may not work.

I know people who still don't like black music. I assume we are talking about music that black people dominate such as rap and soul, and not black rock stars too? If you talking black rock stars too then the easiest way to bridge the gap would be through Jimi.

What do you mean by "black music"? Music performed by
people who happen to be of African descent? God, I hope
I'm not sounding unbearably PC here. I am just wondering.

Obviously, there is a lot of ground to cover...everything from the
aforementioned groups to old Ska, Jamaican dub, Billie Holliday
to Lionel Richie. Lots of great stuff to choose from (I am a HUGE
Lionel Richie fan. Mock me if you must!).

Good luck. You should be able to find something.

she hates soul, jazz, hip hop, rnb, funk, ska, reggae. She hates music of black origin. Hendrix wouldnt get a listen in as he isnt modern rock.

Well, I would ask her why she doesn't like Afriacan American preformers.

Then,I would tell her although she likes white preformers-- all the music that you mentioned truly has roots with people of African Ancestry, so in fact, she does like African American music-- even though it's not preformed by African Americans.

Then I would just let her listen to the music she wants-- as long as she's not a racist, I would just let her do her thing. It's her loss. Maybe it's her way of rebeling and making a big deal about it isn't going to help things.

Good luck Dom. It's really refeshing to hear a parent care so much about their child!!!

Daisy has a point there. I can tell you, from the perspective of being a sixteen year old myself, that no matter how much I might enjoy something, if my parents force it on me I very often will make a big point of saying that I dislike it. Couldn't tell you why, I wouldn't call it rebelling; perhaps its just me being difficult. Allow her to discover it for herself maybe. Perhaps by forcing this magic box, as you call it, on her, you're just making situations worse. Then again, it might just be me.

Oh, and if you do go the route of the box set, maybe some old ska like Kathryn said. Some first wave, like the Skatalites, or some second wave like the Specials. Not being a huge ska fan myself, I still enjoy this stuff a lot; the reggae influence is very apparent.

Ha ha ha, oh my heavenly lord Jesus... that's some good stuff right there.

I would say that nice John Hendrix gentleman, or James Brown. I can't understand how you couldn't like James Brown... even after the entier wife beating thing or whatever, like... come on, even after all those pictures of him drunken and disorintated with messy hair, like... come on.

To my daughter hip hop is because I got high, so I have gone for the middle ground and put California uber alles by the disposable heroes, to her soul is Puff Daddy so I have put these arms of mine by otis redding, to her funk, jazz, soul are all alien, so I have family affair, I have say a little prayer, renegades of funk. There is a glimmer of light poking through though. Her boyfriend is a real music fan, he does her compilations and to broaden her mind he has starting to put things like kelis, and the beastie boys on CD's he does for her.

One final note, and please those with a nervous disposition turn away now. Some time back I was playing Whats going on, the marvin gaye album and she said this rubbish can go off.
