sorry GD, didn't see this earlier. I'm almost finished Polaroids from the Dead. when/where did you meet him? i see him sometimes but i'm too shy to approach, i think i know the house he lives in and i've written him letters but i've never sent them, it's weird we kinda have the same passion for our home town, i would like to have lunch with him. i saw this cool short film last summer called "mon amour, mon parapluie" (my love, my umbrella). an artsy black&white 10 minute affair, at the very beginning there is a scene where they pan through a coffee shop and doug and william gibson are having a cup 'o' joe.

Haha, yeah I saw that too...as you said Tre..you must of really been concentrating on that book.
Maybe it wasnt Orwell at all...maybe you read just a book called 1989? hmm. you should try 1984..its quite good ya know!

Shine - oh cool, you live in his town!!!! I would love to live any where near him!!!
I met him when he did a tour, he was at Borders(book shop..obviously...) in Brighton, and I went to hear him read some bits of his new book. He actually spent the entire tinme making simpson references. he was really funny.

Did you know he designed the most popular style cots when he was younger? he's real pissed at not getting any of the share of profits from his design. haha.

Thats so cool about the film thing..heh.

I was really really really really tired... I have been working shifts no excuse though... going to go edit it and make you all look really silly. *grump*

Evberyone seems to show an interest in contemporary fiction...maybe something along the lines of will self? like quantim theory of insanity? (i cant actually remembe r the title, so that may not be it...)

This one? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0679750940/qid=1087928901/sr=8-2/ref=pd_ka_2/002-1963896-9306419?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

Looks good to me. How long to read it? Two weeks? Three? I don't really want to go longer than that, b/c I will already be well on to my next book in three weeks.

My library lets me have books for three weeks (two weeks for new releases) so let's say Quantity Theory of Insanity by Will Self - read by July 10?

Well ive already bought the book now, so we have to!!! haah

ON your marks, gets set...go!!!

Ive read bits of self shorts before, they are really good...Ive always been put off by shorts before, because i like to get stuck in to a book...

But i think to start us of this is a good idea, nice and short, and despite cheesemans worries, hes always a good read.

Er, yeah... cool.

Sooooo, short stories are fine with me. The next book after this will be Cowboys are my Weakness by Pam Houston. Short stories by a girl and one of my favorite books ever. Because I say so, it is true!

Can I play please?

I promise I won't mention Kinky Friedman or Nick Cave or Leonard Cohen?!

Hmmmmm. And in no way shape or form am I going to suggest that you are clearly quite mad for not mentioning The King Of Gonzo, Hunter S. Thompson...

Holy shit, Tre. The Wasp Factory was the book I was going to mention, too. That's an incredibly twisted book. The band Lusk had a video for their song Backworlds which was clearly lifted from the book (the sea mine murder). That's actually how I found out about the book, someone said the video was taken directly from the Wasp Factory. Wow, not many people know that novel.

Oh, Tre, read any other Iain Banks? Anything worth reading? I see Complicity in a lot of bookstores.

An Iain Banks novel turned into a TV series? That's crazy!

I didn't but the book, I have two bloody will self books that I so cannot be arsed with at the moment, I think the bookclub died.

Since it started I have read some good ones though, I read the Bill Hicks Biography, I re-read Only Forward by Michael Marshall Smith (I really really recommend this to everyone - the guy has a tube station called Fuck Station Zero in it for fords sake) I read the Bridge (Iain Banks) er,Jeff Noon, some pynchon, some hunter s thompson, loads, can't remember it all...

TarTar - I have read the bridge, the crow road, walking on glass, complicity, the wasp factory (the best of them all imo), The business, whit and song of stone

The only two I haven't read yet are espedair street and dead air, It's a bit hit and miss with banks, I did love the bridge but I think he struggles to finish them in a satisfactory manner sometimes

I don't mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel, but I am, so that's how it comes out.

i am currently reading great apes, will self. i liked the business better than complicity, those are the only two banks i've read.

maybe we should change this to 1-book-a-month-club and we can post what each month's book will be and anyone who wants to read it has a full month. this would work thusly - in august we talk about july's book and what book we will be reading for septamber, that gives us a month to decide and discuss each book? how does this sound?
