Just a thought but maybe we could have a forum book club over the summer. Something like, we pick a book and have a few weeks to read it and then we can all "discuss" what we thought of it. Maybe we can pick MUSIC books or something, at least to start. The new Marvin Gay bio is coming out soon...
I don't know. Would anyone be interested in this?

This might be quite cool. With any luck I should be able to afford to buy a book and everything... See if we can find one thats out everywhere as well.

sounds like a good idea, but only if they carry the book at the local library. I spend too much money on books as it is and the last thing I need to do is buy another one every few weeks.

Well, I think we would just have to pick a book and people who wanted to read it (and could join in) would. If we go about it too democratically, we will never read anything. See the T-shirt thread if you want to know what I mean...

Those both look good. I am going to Virgin Megastore after work, maybe I will see what I find there as well.

I would like to join in depending on the book. I don't think I'd be reading this round though. The genre doesn't really interest me right now.
Great idea, Em!

Good point though, we could do other genres after this one.

Yeah, I love fiction myself, so I would prefer that - but I thought more peopel would be interested in music at first.
We could do two genres at once. I am always reading at least two books.
The fiction I bought today is called "Massachucsetts, California, Timbuktu" by Stephanie Rosefeld, if anyone is interested.

White Line Fever, which is the biography of Lemmy.... a really good read believe it or not, the guy comes across as a decent bloke.

what about 'Our Band could change you life' by Michael Azzerd (sp?) Its really cool, about all the bands of indie america in 70s i think, or 80..fuck i cant remember, features bands such as ; fugazi, black flag, husker du etc etc etc. is very interesting, and he is a good writer - he also wrote come as you are - the kurt thing.
I bet you never thought your movie would turn out this way You crossed the other way, youd hope i wouldnt see you, you say youre doing fine, but thats not what it looks like, your undercovers on...

I´d be into that, but if it´s limited to music journalism this time I can wait for another.
I´ve got a mixed opinion of that guy Palahniuk, Floop, though I really enjoyed Choke.

i haven't read anything by him, and figured it was about time. since enough people seem to think highly of him. and he gets props from Bret Easton Ellis and comparisons to Don Delillo (two authors i like). plus, i need to read something. get the old brain juices flowing |

This is a good idea. Why not do it? Let's decide on a book for once. And give everybody plenty of time to read.

btw, i really like lullaby by CP, i picture them listening to black letter days as they drive around the country trying to recover the.........oops, don't want to ruin it.

What douglas coupland book you reading shine? I love DC. hes definately in my top ten. and ive met him.
CP i really like too. I loved lullaby, and choke was pretty sick.funny.
And yeah, if youre gonne read irvine, you defo need to read them in that order. I didnt, and wish i had. altho you can pick up most things if youve watched trainspotting (recently). but its much better in order.

Choke is a great book, Palahniuk's best. It's kind of sad to see his name bandied about with hacks like douglas coupland and easton ellis. Even at his worst, he's way more interesting than those guys. I liked Invisible Monsters a lot too. |

I liked generation X and I liked american psycho but everything else by those other authors I hated. I think with some of the modern classics these guys have one only book in them... on the road (kerouac), clockwork orange(Burgess), one flew over the cuckoo's nest (Kesey), Brave New World (Huxley - which I liked better than 1984 ((Orwell)) but I think orwell has a few good books so I'll let 'em off) The Crying of lot 49 (pynchon) New York Trilogy (Auster).. all great but when I tried other books by the same authors they didn't grab me either. Hunter S thompson only wrote one book, which is a shame, but his journalism is great and I'd worry that with other fiction he'd follow these other guys' route.
I like Burroughs, Bukowski (the little of his books and poems I've read), Brautigan (recently re-released all his books, I't recommend Abortion a historical romance) Michael Marshall Smith, Will Self, Iain Banks ( a funny one.. some amazing but a couple less amazing, I love the bridge and the wasp factory)
And alot of sci fi new and old, William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, John Wyndham, Frank Herbert, Isaac Asimov...
hmmm who else... I read a Tom robbins book I like recently 'still life with woodpecker' I also read the bell jar (Plath) which was interesting and I'm struggling with the gormenghast trilogy (Mervyn Peake) and I reccoment the dark materials trilogy (Pullman) to everyone both as a theological science fiction and as a childrens book way better than harry potter.
So yes... feed me books, I like books hmmm going to be quiet now... |

Have read Grilfriend in a coma and miss wyoming.. I read another one which I forget the name of... GF in a coma is the first I read (because of the smiths song *blush*) and it bored me to tears I almost gave up. Ditto Miss Wyoming. And the other one (which is going to bug me now... I'll have to look it up on amazon) I buy nearly all my books from charity shops and more recently music zone (hurrah for music zone) I only make an effort to buy new when an author makes me want to, and the coupland books didn't make me want to.
Will Self, marvelous stuff, what a guy.. what a strange wonderfull mind, reading My Idea of Fun at the moment and have just bought tough tough toys for tough tough boys (both brand new from proper shops ;o) )

the best way to judge an author is to read their books.....i have read most of palahniuks stuff - great! i have read all of couplands stuff - great! i could not get through glamorama (tried 3 times) so i have to say american psycho was good but easton ellis doesn't do it for me.
so what book are we going to read ramona? your idea, you pick. i'll make a couple suggestions though. pick a fiction book, not too long, not too short. here are a couple books i have been eyeing at the library:
wasp factory - iain banks (the business) oops, tre has read this affliction - russell banks (sweet hereafter)

read the wasp factory anyway. It's a bit of a head twister, but I love the place it takes me to (If you know what I mean) and I promise you will finish reading it with your mouth open. If not well spank my arse and call me charlie
