Who out there picked up the album and DVD yesterday? I'm listening to the album right now (third song in) and I'm digging it so far. After 23 years they still kick ass. NYCG&F and Murray Street were both excellent albums. I'm pretty confident this one will stand up next to them.

We got to see SY at the NONCOMM (non-commercial radio) festival last month. They were awesome, even though the crowd was lame. Mostly industry people who had no idea what they were listening to. Thurston ditched his whole amp rig while shoving the head of his guitar into the speaker cabinet, but didn't skip a beat. Too bad it was only a 45 minute set. I got to see them 10 years prior where they headlined, the crowd was totally into it, and the show went for about 3 hours. Did they ever recover any of their gear after their van got stolen a few years back?

it's been some time and about 4 albums since sonic youth did anything that really peaked my interest.
i am more than slightly trepidatious in wasting money on another "album" before giving it an honest earfull. |

Eh, the Diamond Sea from the second half of Washing Machine is a cool song, but some of the breakdowns into noise are a bit annoying. They sound like something I would do if I was trying to parody Sonic Youth to the extreme. Self-indulgent noise.

You enjoying your stint at the CV, Mel?
SY has its ups and downs. I love Washing Machine, as well as Daydream Nation, Goo, Dirty, Made in USA, but in '94 I bought a damn cd of them collaborating with Yamatsuka Eye (TV Shit). 45 minutes of nonstop dislocated drone and wail. This was before the advent of online reviews and research. Though at first I was irritated, I like a surprise, and I love the fact that it is out there. I don't want my whole world to be harmony and song-like sweetness.
I really dig Thurston's "Psychic Hearts". Listened to it continually for the entire summer the year it came out.
Only saw them live once -at NONCOMM - and they were even better as a live experience. The new material sounded great, so I think a new purchase is in order.

Hey apl, I had the same good/bad surprise with TV Shit (although it's not 45 minutes long, it lasts no more than 10 minutes). The guy at the record store told me it was a b-sides compilation... Damn jerk. I was a big SY fan in my youth, but for some reason I haven't bought any of their records after 1000 Leaves (great album, BTW, one of my faves). I think I'll start again with Sonic Nurse, it looks promising.

hahah -in retrospect it seemed like 45 minutes! Funny how memory changes things. Haven't listened to it in a long while. I bet it would be great to listen to while working in the studio now, though. Music like that gets the creative sparks flying.

"Psychic Hearts" is a kickass little album! I listened to it avidly for a couple of years, off and on. Every now and then I'll still throw it on.....I just really like Thurston's musical aesthetic. Punkish delivery of stuff, nice noisy guitars, mellow/chaotic soundscapes....good good stuff. To this day, its had a lasting musical influence on me.
I picked up "Sonic Nurse" yesterday...I still haven't listened to it actually, but will definitely do so this weekend. Other things I bought yesterday (since my friend works at Tower and gets a nice discount!):
-Iggy Pop "The Idiot" -Sebadoh "Harmacy" -Spoon "Loveways" -a book of sexual positions for every day of the year [ I thought it'd be a nice present for my girlfriend. Ok, maybe the purchase was a TAD self-motivated as well! (; ] |

I've given it another spin and I love it. I don't think there's a single bad song on the album. I have a great appreciation for "Unmade Bed" now after seeing it on Leno last night; I think they pulled it off better live than on the album, it was a lot more moody, mellow, and beautiful. "I Love You Golden Blue" is fucking great. A few more listens and it's going to make me cry...Kim's vocal melody is depressingly beautiful. I think the last 3 albums are probably some of the best albums in their entire career.

Oh, and the DVD has all of their music videos between Goo and Murray Street, plus a couple of different bonus features...I only watched through most of the videos with commentary. Holy shit, their Goo videos are embarassing.

You know what I think what cruel is? Leaving your loved ones to die in some sterile hospital room surrounded by strangers. Fuck that! Put 'em in the movies! Whaaat? Do you want your grandmother dying like a little bird in some hospital room? Her translucent skin so thin you can see her last heartbeat work its way down her blue veins?
Or do you want her to meet Chuck Norris?

The Pixies videos are all amazing. That Velouria video is leaps and bounds ahead of anything I've ever seen. Or well, it's at least leaps and bounds over rocks.

I haven't bought the new album yet but i know it'll be good, i've liked every album plus side project that they've put out (except NYG&F).
For those in the UK, Sonic Youth are playing Brixton on 2nd September. I've just bought my ticket from Wayahead/ See, get in there before they sell out! |

hmm, never going to london again if I can help it.
If we know for sure that rock ’n’ roll is truly the devil’s music—at least he fucking jams! And if it’s a choice between good tunes and eternal damnation, or eternal heaven and New Kids on the Fucking Block... I’m gonna be surfing on the Lake of Fire, rocking out |

Birmingham. Went to london for the pixies gig and had a horrible time, had my purse stolen, got punched by a drunk square in the side of the head and got mugged by a tramp for my last fiver

02/06/04 spent a small fortune on e bay for the tickets as well... The gig was the only amazing thing about the trip. On reflection it's kind of funny that one girl should have so much bad luck but at the time with the headaches the brokeness and the impressive nosebleed in the hostel shower it. Was. Not. Funny... |

To be fair I've visited london a few times before and never had any trouble. But on the other hand I've lived in Brum off and on for many years and never had that sort off crap and Birmingham has a cruddy reputation. |
