Mr. Jason Homer Morro Bay, California
Dear Mr. Homer:
Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to a reinstatement of the military draft. I appreciate hearing from you regarding this important issue.
Like you, I am completely opposed to a reinstatement of the draft. It is the last thing that we should be considering at this time.
It is true that that the war in Iraq has put a strain on our nation's military. As a result, soldiers' deployments are being extended again and again and we are relying too heavily on Reserves and National Guard to perform lengthy duties. Clearly, our troops are stretched thin and deserve relief.
However, I strongly believe that the answer to an overstretched military is increased recruitment and retention measures, including better pay for our soldiers and better health care for our veterans. Even more, the Administration needs an effective exit strategy in Iraq that will complete the reconstruction and get our troops home. And the Administration cannot continue to go it alone. It must be more effective at working with other countries to make the force in Iraq more international and reduce the burden on our troops.
Unfortunately, the principle of an all-volunteer army was undermined by the Administration recently when it announced that soldiers near the end of their volunteer commitments could face extended tours even after they have fulfilled their obligation. I am deeply concerned with this change in policy.
I voted against the war in Iraq because I believed this Administration had overstated its case for pre-emptive war, rushed us unilaterally into the conflict, and had no real plan for the reconstruction or to bring our soldiers home. Despite the President's claims, these concerns have been confirmed.
As you may know, H.R. 163, the Universal National Service Act was introduced in the House on January 7, 2003. This bill would require all Americans between the ages of 18 and 26 to perform two years of national defense service. Currently, this bill has 14 cosponsors and has been referred to the House Armed Services Committee. As you may know, a draft would require the approval of majorities in both Houses of Congress. In my view, it is unlikely that there would be enough support in Congress for a draft at this time.
Again, thank you for contacting me. Please be assured that, with your views in mind, I will vehemently oppose any attempt to respond to the situation in Iraq by reinstating a military draft. Please keep in touch. Sincerely,
Lois Capps Member of Congress

you should write back and say that you'll be in town and maybe you could go out and grab a beer or something. that would be interesting to hear his response.

I don't know for sure it was her, but we heard all about a female Congressman er... I guess Congresswoman... who opposed the war and was being catcalled and shunned by congress and people in general for being 'anti-American' and a whole schwack of other really idiotic things.

Yeah, I read that book, it was pretty hilarious at moments. I think he made a second one too, but I haven't read it.

Lois Capps use to be my representative when I lived in Santa Barbara. She (yes, she's a woman) inherited the seat when he husband died and she has been re-elected a few times. It's a polarized district with Santa Barbara being largely liberal but the surrounding rural areas being pretty conservative.
I don't think she's the congresswoman that was singled out. I think that was someone from the LA area and was about the Patriot Act or something soon after 9/11. |

If it was right after 9/11, she was probably harrassed because of her dislike of the term "freedom fries"

If they're freedom fries, how come they cost so much? Freedom means not having to pay too much for fast food!
