Cool choice apl. I think I've only heard one song from this band, 'Mulholland'. I though, meh, soundtrack music to begin with, but on repeated listening, its pretty ace. I should really look into investing in a CD... is that the best one to get?

I'm not sure, Cheeseman -I found them via other interests on epitonic.com, and checked out reviews on amazon and a couple other sites, figured I liked all the songs I heard from it on epitonic, so it was my first buy. I would probably listen to the free mp3s a few times and see what happenes. I think there are a few of theirs available. Sometimes they remind me of Rachel's, which is a good thing. Another one I got into that is similar is Labradford - they are on epitonic too.
This kind of music can really grow on you, but it is definitely meant for certain mindframes, like when I am working in the studio, hanging out and having good conversation, or when I am feeling contemplative. I think it would be great for a planetarium or star-gazing.

This all sounds pretty reasonable to me... You've got to love epitonic. I've heard some Rachel's there, its nice: I like 'first to last', I think its called. I'm not so keen on Labradford for some reason. Its all similar sort of stuff, but doesn't grab me in the same way for some reason. To be fair, I've only listened to 'Up To Pizmo', so I shouldn't really judge.

Have you heard Hope Of The States, Jen? You may or may not like them. They have the whole sweeping, grandiose Sigur Ros kind of drama going on, but are a lot more accessible, with slightly more conventional structures, and lyrics in English and everything. I can only find one track on the web, which isn't great, so try p2p - 'Black Dollar Bills', and 'Enemies/Friends' are both songs.

Hey apl4eris, this week I've been listening to Big Science, from Laurie Anderson, all the time. I like it very much - thank you for your recommandation. I think I'll try to buy her stuff around Moby Dick - sounds like a great idea...

Hey hey, I haven't heard of Hope of the States, Simon -always interested in new stuff. I never got into Sigur Ros, the vocals bug the crap out of me. If you are interested in getting some Rachel's, I would recommend "The Sea and the Bells", "Handwriting", or "Systems/Layers" (their latest release). Labradford grew on me. I like the track "David" (epitonic) - it reminds me a lot of Calexico, one of my favorite bands, and also Angelo Badalamenti(sp?)/Julee Cruise, from Lynch movies.

Sweet, Adnan. That's really great you like Laurie Anderson. I haven't been able to get my hands on anything from the Moby Dick performance. If you ever have a chance to see her perform, that is the best way to experience her. Incredible person. She did a lot of work with William Burroughs as well -some mp3s can be found at www.ubu.com. You may also want to try "Home of the Brave" and "United States Live"(box set)... at the risk of rambling off the cliff, there is also a terrific computer "game/puzzle" she created for mac and pc, called "Puppet Motel" -if you ever run into it, I highly recommend it.

I think meifen and myself have similar listening habits. This is only exacerbated by the fact that we're boyfriend and girlfriend and live in the same apartment. (If she didn't love Frank, we'd already have murdered each other, I wager.)

Great records, HPM. Diamond sea is one of my favorite SY songs, though it is very similar to I'll be your mirror, by Velvet Undergound.

HPM, Limbo is so good. "Cowbirds" and "White Bikini Sand". If you ever see it somewhere, get the "Shark" EP, it has a better version of that song plus re-recordings of Limbo, and two others, and they have slightly different names, like Limbobo.

Yeah, "Buzz" is a really good song too. It wasn't a single though. Only "Shark" and "Ruthie's Knocking" (a song I always skip, it's lame and sounds too much like everything on the radio).

Did you know it's an enhanced CD- if you put it in the computer you can see a live performance of "Ruthie's Knocking".

actually, only the US version has the enhanced section....
but anyways, i think Buzz is the worst song on the album...the guitar is horrible.
my favourite is Mr Bones - a truly beautiful song

presently, Velouria from the saskatoon show is on, and my golly it sounds fantastic.....
