Maybe he hasn't edited in the last few days because he's been touring. Of course, he could have the technology to keep it up on the road, but if I were him, I'd be a bit distracted.

I was picking up on the joke, but then was distracted by my thoughts of how John Flansburgh keeps his fans posted while he's on tour. I wouldn't think that Frank is as techno-savvy as John, but it'd be nice. I flame no one. Don't worry.

So great claims are being made on behalf of the merits of Honeycomb. I will try to rephrase that in a less pompous way - Dean and Dave have heard great things about the album. Care to enlighten us further, D'n'D? Is there an obvious Asterid influence? Does Frank's uncle sing The Shrimp Song in the style of Townes Van Zandt?

That's really all I've heard, Andy. You know we love to pass on whatever we can as soon as we can, but that was really it. I haven't heard it myself nor do I expect to until October, but I'm really looking forward.
I think with this Nashville record, FB's trying to get back to his roots, musically, by which I mean, of course, a LOT of Asterid influence. I heard he even asked some of them to pop by the studio but they had a scheduling conflict. Too bad, too, I would've been alright with that. :)

i didn't know frank black himself was in here participating.. that's cool! hey frank, i love your music. thanks for the pixies reunion--i just saw you in spokane (voice is still hoarse from screaming the lyrics), and i'll be there in bend, too. and honeycomb, nashville number system, whatever you wind up calling it... sounds awesome. with the list of players, sounds like you might be entering yet another new phase of creation.. is that the chester thompson who formerly played with frank zappa and genesis? if so, what an unlikely addition, but surprises are so much fun.. anyway, keep up the good work. i admire you for always being yourself no matter what, and of course for making good music. i'll definately keep buying your music and playing it on the radio since sometimes i dj.. see you in bend! |

Lol, keep it real. You guys crack me up. I wonder how Frank and the gang are doing on the road. Too bad senor Thompson doesn't have a comp to keep us updated. I one of those that love the behind the scenes stuff. And what's the release date on Frank Black Francise and is it being released in the States cause I can only find it on Amason.uk.com
Hope to see you around soon Frank, and let us how it's all coming along.

Aren't the Pixies on a break from touring right now?
I'm think it's cool that Frank doesn't give us little personal updates all the time. Not that I want this from everyone, but I like whatever distance and mystique Frank has cultivated. It works for him, I think.
I wonder if there are any happy songs on the new album. Like "Sing for Joy". I bet it goes "You sing for joy/While I'm feeling blue". |

I just wanted to chime in and say that I feel that Honeycomb is a way too commercial sounding name for what seems to be a very serious record with the musicians he has lined up. I also think that "Nashville Number System" not only must address a true part of the style of and feel for how the music was created, but lends itself to more interesting imagery than the cliche or trite "hexagon" pattern that comes to everyone's mind at the mention of Honeycomb.
Truly, both are good, but I for one think that the "Nashville Number System" was a better selection, cerebrally. Honeycomb just seems to indicate "Packaged preprocessed cereal food mashed into neat little "natural" shapes", while the other seemed to call upon more lofty imagery. Just my interpretation of the names and how they present themselves.

Jus thought I'd chime in here as well. As long as we're chiming. We went 24 track to allow us the flexibility of mixing, but it's a very overdub-free album, for the most part. Akil is Chester's son. Final track selection is still under consideration. Honeycomb is a great title and a great song. Dan Penn sings a little on the record, most notably on "Dark End of the Street" which he told me was the finest version of the song since James Carr's, halfway between James' version and Gram's. Other guests on the album include Ellis Hooks (a phenomenal soul singer from Alabama) and Jimmy Griffin (ex-Bread).

It's nice that he's willing to drop the 2-track thing when there are benefits. This is going to be a good 'un, I can tell!

Perhaps you should wait until you hear the album. Then maybe when you think of Honeycomb you won't associate it with the cereal, but rather an excellent album (because it no doubt will be).

OK, can anybody help a brother out? I'm coming to Manhattan in mid-July to finish up the Honeycomb overdubs and I need a studio with the Alesis HD24. I've got a couple of vocals to do, so I don't need anything fancy, no bells & whistles, but I do need this unit. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? best, Jon Tiven |

Thanks for the Cyclone Sound ref, I was looking for Manhattan for the convenience of our mystery vocalists whose names I cannot reveal at this time. I will keep looking, but if all else fails, that might work. In response to Jose, there are a few covers---All Around the World a.k.a. Needle in My Arm, Sunny Groove Day, Dark End, Shrimp Song---but the majority of the album is all new FB compositions, the likes of which he's only hinted at in his past work. Americanalternative. |

Why should I wait until I hear the album, everyone else gave their opinion? It was just my two cents on the matter at this point. Perhaps you don't agree with me... that's ok... I mean, you name IS Proverbial Cereal, what should I expect?
Seriously, I'm sure I'll love whatever its called after hearing it, just making my comments, like everyone else, about the impending album's name, which I preferred and why. Since artwork/concept is a marketing tool that can attract buyers/fans (or repels them) non-fans, or the nonchalant fan, I think my comments are not only appropriate, but substantive, slightly poignant and original amidst the other posts. Again, perhaps you disagree. That's ok.

I'm actually not a big fan of Honeycomb the cereal. I'm sure the album will be alot better than the cereal. I guess for a Frank Black album title it is a pretty common compound word. I think the title is OK I suppose. I wonder why Frank chose it. Is there a song of the same name on the album? I should check that out...

Thanks Jon, as a fan of Frank's take on alt country/americana/folk (Llano Del Rio, Goodbye Lorraine, Southbound Bevy etc) I cannot wait. Do you have any idea if the album is likely to be released in 2004 or not? As for backing vocalists, did Julie Miller add any vocals in the Nashville sessions? Incidentally, I loved the Arthur Alexander tribute album.

There is a song on the album called "Honeycomb" (a new one written by FB) that is a treat, thus the title. Julie did not sing on the album, all the backgrounds are by Spooner, Dan, James Griffin, and Ellis Hooks. Glad you liked Adios Amigo, hope you also enjoyed the Otis Blackwell one with two appearances by our host. We have our NY studio, so hopefully all will go well with the final stages of the recording. I expect to finish by the end of July, so it is unlikely the album will come out this year, but it is possible. toodles, y'all, JT

Frank and you did a great job on 'Brace Yourself', really. I hope 'Handyman' and 'Breathless' will be featured on the first FB compilation... they really deserve to be more widely known.
Again, thanks for your info!

I wonder if Jon Tiven or Dan Penn ever heard the version of "Dark End of the Street" done by Diamanda Galas and John Paul Jones?

Speaking for myself, no. For me, the version to beat is Dan Penn's, live, anytime, to any track, guitar, or box. The guy wrote the song and he still can own it anytime he opens his mouth. There is a version on his MOMENTS FROM THIS THEATRE album (live, with Spooner Oldham), that delivers the goods. All that being said, I think you'll see that Frank's version is definitive in a completely different way. best, JT |

Everybody is making references to Honeycomb the cereal, but there was also a band, The Honeycombs, the one-hit-wonder with "Have I the Right". This song is pretty bad-ass actually. I love Joe Meek. Thanks for all the insider info Mr. Tiven. It sounds very exciting. I enjoyed the Otis Blackwell stuff a great deal. |

"Honeycomb" is also an awesome song by the band Helium - Mary Timony's old band... Is a beautiful song with a bizarre video with lots of dirt and dump trucks....
frankly, it'll be very tricky for Franks "honeycomb" to top Helium's one....
