You gotta love 'em!!! But what were your favourite toys as a child???

If nothing else, this should seperate the age groups in here.

Mine were

Star Wars, mini toy cars and He-Man but notable mentions must also go out to small plastic soldiers (the ones you used to be able to get from jumble sales (a bit like garage sales for the Americans/Canadians here) for about a quid for a whole war-worth of 'em) and Transformers. Never really got into GI Joe (Action Force in UK) but looking back, I can see it was probably the best toy all round!!!

Toy cars is an interesting one 'cos I have absolutely no interest in cars now really!!!

Kids don't really play with toys nowadays do they? They are all too busy mugging old leadies I guess!!!

I just picked up all 3 Hanson Brothers action figures. The hockey players from 'Slapshot', not the band! Way cool.
As a kid I had all kinds of Hot Wheels stuff, HO trains and slotcars, just to name some faves..

Kids play with video games or card games from japan.

Kids play with fashion barbie dolls with big eyes called BRATZ that seem like everything you wouldn't want your kid to turn out to be rolled into one doll.

I believe the children are the future. Give them strength and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they posess inside. Give them a sense of hope to make it easier. Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be.

I decided long ago, never to walk in any one's shadow.....

huh....what..Bobby, slap me.

I was gonna make this thread a long time ago when I did the Cartoons thread but I never got around to it.

I loved my Marvel and WWF action figures. Loved the video games and giant, stuffed Donatello that I used to wrestle with and stab with my grandmother's knitting needles.

Well it really hasn't been that long since I played with toys (maybe 8 years), but I think my favorites were jurrasic park and batman stuff, and of course legos

Legos, Lincoln Logs, Micromachines, Hot Wheels, Star Wars action figures (too bad I didn't leave those in the original boxes).

Also had Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures.

Anyone remember Constructs? They were like high tech, spacey lincoln logs

Overall, GI Joes were the best. I still have all mine and all my vehicles...I'm considering selling them but I don't think I could bring myself to it...maybe I'll just sell the vehicles. I had a ton of toys...I went through different phases. I had a box of Legos but never really collected them. TMNT, I had those. Had some Voltron, Thundercats (very little), Ghost Busters...my last collection was XMen toys. Now I collect Simpsons toys. I love toys!

Man, that brings me back. My favorites included Lincoln Logs and Ninja Turtles action figures. I used to line up all of my army men facing each other, and stage intricate battles. I also liked Legos, but never really collected them. I also spent a lot of time mixing things I found under the bathroom sink, trying to concoct potions. Playing with toys was always great.

I had the old 12" GI Joe with the fuzzy hair. Also had the "Secret of the Mummies Tomb" with the little 6-wheeled ATV and the glow-in-the-dark mummy. Action Team! Great toys.

How could I forget Lego?!?!?! Although I wish people would stop calling it legos!!! What the hell is that all about?!?!?! Is that you called them in the US???

I do remember Visionaries Dave 'cos they were at the back of my Transformer comics for a while. Good story actually, though I never had any of the toys.

Apart from the Barbie mutilation, this is a very non-violent list (as long as YOU didn't actually kill the dead things). How unusual, yet refreshing for a young boy!!!

Seems like a much more creative list than most boys wouuld have. Well done. V Good. A+. Have a merit!!!

Uh, I'm a girl, but thanks, Homer's Pet Monkey.

Btw, why shouldn't we call them Legos? That's what they are called here, even in the commercials....this smacks of an international conspiracy!

I had a whole lotta stuff, and many things which were mentioned here. I was into my Barbies for a long time, I also had a lot of My Little Ponies (which are a very weird toy looking back). I also liked Transformers, Lincoln Logs, Legos, and all kinds of art stuff. My best friend when I was 7 was a boy, so we played with his G.I. Joe's a lot too.

My friends and I were very into Light Bright (does that count as a toy?) and Hungy Hungry Hippo, which was a game, but whatever.

I also had a doll house and these little animals that lived in it which were called Sylvanians. Did anyone else have those??

You know what's funny Em,
is that my daughter love my little ponies,
you can still buy all of that stuff; my littly pony, strawberry shortcake...

My son is into these TechDeckDudes now.

I used to like to play with my bro's star wars action figures,
until all hell broke loose when I lost Hans Solo's teeny tiny little plastic gun.

Sorry Jenny, I wasn't paying attention but even if I had of been, I had no idea you were female (your toy list certainly didn't seem gender specific)!!!

Some very interesting art at your homepage btw. I like it. I can see why you were so creative as a child now (toy wise).

I should probably never admit to this but I got a Sylvanian Family bear in a packet of Corn Flakes once. She was beautiful with a very pretty pink, flowery dress. Ooh you should have seen my Stormtroopers blush when she was introduced to the group. I think she had a thing for Han Solo though (didn't all you girls?).

Thank you Homer's Pet Monkey, I appreciate the compliment. It's been a long time since I was in the art world, so every good word means a lot.

You didn't mention - what do you guys call Legos over there? Have we been saying it wrong all these years? Wouldn't surprise me I guess, I just recently found out we've been misspelling aluminium, and the whole time I thought you were all just adding extra syllables for the heck of it.

They're Legos just like it's "Cheez-its" and not "Cheez-it" and "Oreos" not "Oreo." I don't care what the package says. But doesn't the package say "Legos?"

Ok, if I remember, it says lego on the boxes, but scutor makes a point with the oreo thing. If you say "I'm gonna go play with lego," it just doesn't sound right. It needs to be pluralized. One block = a lego. Two blocks = two legos.

I suppose you could say "legi."

What do they call them in Mexico?

El Lego?

Los Legos?

Okay. In 1976 I recieved for XMAS my favorite toy EVER. It was called EARTHQUAKE TOWER. It was a skyscraper, segmented into three sections, and stood 5 feet tall. Each floor had windows with balconies you could put little plastic people. There was a spire on top of the building. At the base was a parkinglot/sidewalk area for you to put more little plastic people and cars. There were streetlights you could place wherever you wish. It was a very modern/futuristic utopian skyscraper. UNTIL....

At the side of the base were two levers. You squeezed these levers, and to great delight the whole structure would begin to sway (also included was a little vinyl record you would play on your record player...you had to weigh it down with a nickle...from the grooves came ominous adventure music and rumbling noises). The more you activated the levers, the more violent the swaying became until the entire thing collapsed in a big messy pile of plastic and cardboard around you. Oh! The innocence! I loved this toy.

Transformer Refuses To Change Back

CYBOTRON—Following an intense battle with Megatron and his evil Decepticons Monday, former robot-in-disguise Bumblebee refused to revert to his natural state as a yellow Volkswagen Beetle. "I hid my existence in this world by taking the form of a vehicle! I revealed my true nature when I was called upon to protect earth!" said Bumblebee, a member of Optimus Prime's heroic Autobots force. my favourite toy was all my matchbox cars.
i had hundreds of them and i used to play with them endlessly.
I also had some GI Joe and Transformers, but it was the good old matchbox cars that won me over.
making cities for them and i was really excited when i graduated to having trucks...oh, the memories.

i also remember a friend of mine had the Transformers Movie. I would watch it every time i went to his house - in fact that was pretty much the only reason i was friends with him...oh, and that Dinosaur Board game with the lava coming down the side of the mountain...so 2 reasons.

and when i got older - a racing car set was my favourite...i'd save all my money so i could buy new cars (my favourite was the Lamborghini Countach) and new pieces of track.

and it's LEGO.

transformers rock.

My fav things to do as a child, many quite similar to apl4eris...

Bugs/insects. I collected them, and had whole little colonies of them and stuff

anything dinosaur related

toy cars as long as they moved and stuff.
I had the greatest garage as well. it rocked.

Teenage mutant ninja turtles!

Barbies - but only to cut hair and / or make them have sex. haha. I had the raunchiest story lines in my barbie plays...(most barbie were my next door neighbours)

I used to make my own little raido show a lot, that was fun

Trees. Climbing rocked - and sticks and mud - used to make llike sculptures and/or dens out of them.

Lego

Bike. (not since i almost killed my self on one)

Paper and pen / clay were prob my favs tho. and most readily available.

and plenty
more

Most the stuff I really wanted I couldnt get, as we too were very poor.

Notice how history repeats itself, and all the 80s toys are back? GI Joes, TMNT, He-Man, Transformers, My Little Pony, Carebears...they're all back. Speaking of toys, has anyone noticed the severe lack of toy commercials on children's TV these days? Has there been some sort of law passed that they can't show them (that often) anymore? Something like advertising to gullible minors or something? The commercials during cartoons used to be FILLED with toy commercials...shit, they were the best. I'm about 2 minutes away from busting out my Tupperware box full of GI Joes.

I think you hit the nail on the head, benji. The convenience and fast food companies have increased their advertising funding many times over in the last 10 years -I can't remember the actual figures, but I saw a Canadian program on advertising to children that said the money being made off of children (or their parents) buying soft drinks and happy meals and candy and sugar cereal greatly exceeds the profit made in the toy industry. Kinda scary. Might help explain why we now have 25% overweight, 15% obesity rates in children.

What the heck is the LEGO/LEGOS deal? Funny. They must know the scoop in Denmark. Where's Jop when you need him?

lego mainly. loved lego. used to make the biggest 'bases' and and stuff, used to cover most of my room. but i think my mum took my dummy away from me at an early age, i like to chew things, so i'd always be chewing bits of lego, so a lot wouldn't be useable, most of my lego men were missing a leg (rare to have one with 2 legs!) and i even swallowed a few parts of lego... ahh, happy days.
