Bought the tunes and ripped them to cd-audio, if anything, the sound quality of these tracks is as good or better than SYMT. 'A Dab Will Do 'Ya' is an instant fave. 'Show Me Your Tears' sort of falls into the realm of Garage-punk, complete with Farfisa-esqe organ. Are you listening Jack White?? 'Don't Clip Your Wings' and 'Preacher's Daughter' are solid tracks that incorporate all the elements of what FB & TC's have been doing recently. All in all, a great EP.

Sucks. Not only do I have to wait until someone rips them to .mp3 format, I can't pay Frank for them either. I won't do without, though!

As one of the lucky ones able to get it, I just wanted to say thanks to FB y los Catholics for giving us more music. If making stuff available online means there will be more songs available, then I'm all for it (but I guess I am one of the lucky ones).

I got it this morning.

Pretty good. Understandable why the tracks weren't included on an album, though.

if anyone wants to give me the tracks i'll rip them from acc to mp3. i can't get the damn things cause i'm in the uk.
or an alternative bit of advice - if you're prepared to pay for quicktime pro you can convert them in that as that is the itunes engine.

Crap. I want these songs.
By the way, what does "A Dab'll Do Ya" mean? I tried to search on Google but couldn't find any translation. And my 2nd question: is Preacher's Daughter an original FB song? Looks like there's a Lynyrd Skynyrd song called the same.

i'm pretty sure they are all originals. Frank played Preacher's Daughter for an encore when i saw him at McCabe's guitar shop. From what i remember it was a fantastic tune.

Denis, "A Dab'll Do 'Ya" is an expression taught to kids gluing things together. You don't need a lot of it, just a little (a dab) will do (you). Although I presume that Frank's not referencing glue... :)

I thought it was from the hair pommade commercial jingle, the old Brylcreem hair cream ad slogan- "A little dab'll do ya".

Just to make sure, lemmee check it out......

Oh god, I just found more information on this than you'd ever possibly need to know:

http://countrycreativity.com/37464.html
from: http://www.elsewhere.org/cgi-bin/yland.cgi/popopedia/shows/fashion/fa2124.php

“Brylcreem, a little dab’ll do ya!
Brylcreem, you look so debonair!
The gals will all pursue ya,
They’ll love to get their fingers in your hair...”

A little dab? Maybe a little dab was good for all those squares, but a big fat dollop was the only thing going to tame your locks into the perfectly coiffed pompadour front and slicked back, ducktail nape.

Created in 1929 and mass marketed as the first man’s hair product, Brylcreem was a greasy hair cream that was run through the hair, slicking each hair into perfect position. Teenage rebels who slicked their hair into pompadour ducktail hairdos were dubbed ‘Greasers’ after the shiny style, and for their use of copious amounts of the grease. No boy or man’s grooming was complete without a dab of Brylcreem in his hair.

Brylcreem faced its demise once the shaggy haired Beatles hit the scene in the early 60's. Their long and unkempt fringe cuts hung loose across their foreheads, rather than the neat and respectable side part swept back with a dab of Brylcreem. The swinging 60's swept Brylcreem to the sidelines, and the goo eventually surrendered its popularity to Dep gel and hairspray (yes, for boys!).

50's revivalists kept Brylcreem alive during the 70's when John Travolta's Danny Zuko in the 1978 movie Grease sported a slicked back pompadour to make Elvis jealous. The Rockabilly subculture and retro lounge lizard look that resurfaced in the late 90's brought Brylcreem back for a moment of modern glory, keeping the spirit of grease alive into its eighth decade.

And to send you off to the stylist in style, here’s a little Brylcreem trivia for you: What do Fred Flintstone and Brylcreem have in common? Fred’s yell, “Yabba dabba do!” was inspired by the Brylcreem saying, “A little dab’ll do ya.”

1929 - Brylcreem

Also, have you noticed the Coen brothers interest in hair grease products? "Raising Arizona" and "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?" had so much hair cream in 'em you could smell it through the screen.....but I guess that's a digression.... heheh ;)

Holy crap, that's scary. A mousse/gel commercial has entered into our everyday vernacular. Well, I was too young to see any of those commercials, I suppose that for it to be a saying, though, it had to be in mass media at some point.

I never saw those commercials either, not firsthand. I think they reference it in movies though, so I may have seen that way.
It's been a common phrase here in the states, at least - and has moved into other realms of meaning - that is probably why you remember hearing your teachers saying it. Funny, it doesn't even seem weird to me that a slogan has made it into popular language, because it happens all over the place. That may say quite a bit about the domination of advertising in US daily life and culture. Or they just come up with great slogans.... ;)

So does that mean Frank Black is a product of the media? Anyway, I knew it since he did that Pepsi commercial...

Nah - it's a popular saying - it references the greasers and the rockers, like the whole gestalt of rockabilly and being a rebel, making your own way, against society, but still that nod to the fact that it is being done with a commercial product (a part of the machine). I'm sure the french people take popular sayings from products and reinvent them into their culture and make them their own? I wish I could think of one. It's like a play on words in a way - with irony. In the same playfullness as Duchamp's L.H.O.O.Q. on the reinvented Mona Lisa....

Think of the character in "If it Takes all Night". He probably wears Brylcreem. Maybe Billy Radcliff, too.

I'm old enough to have had Brylcreem applied to my hair as a child, before the dab was supplanted by "the Dry Look".

Can't think of any either, but we do it in France too. We also have a bunch of popular expressions coming from the Asterix comics (like "he fell into it when he was a child", referring to Obelix falling into the magic potion and becoming superstrong. Well you probably have never heard of Asterix & Obelix, so forget it).

I have written an e-mail to apple.com, asking them
why they call ITunes the "World's best digital
jukebox", if you can buy songs only from the US.
It should be no problem to pay with an
international credit card from every place of the world,
especially if you *download* the product.
I can't understand why a company like Apple is not
able to sell outside the US.

This has already been covered.. The laws outside the US don't necessarily prevent people from giving away these songs for free, so they're limiting it to US distribution.

Good point on 'World's' tho...it certainly isn't...

Well, this really sucks for the rest of us. Now I just have to find some generous soul to help a poor Canadian lad out. Or wait several years until Microsoft buys iTunes and allows worldwide membership/downloads.

Apple provides the songs in m4p format. Supposedly, you can convert m4p to mp4 and then to mp3, using either of the several programs that claim to do such. I currently experimenting with these tools.

There you have it...why don't we set up something to let people pay someone, and they'll buy you a GC in return?

What's involved in getting a GC from iTunes?

Well, when one decides to give someone a gift certificate one must specify the amount he's giving and the e-mail address of the receiver. The receiver then receives an e-mail with a certain code, which he must provide at iTunes. When I signed up I had to specify the city and state in the US I was living in, but I do not live in any state within the US so I just put Washington DC with some dummy Zip code. When I finally got in there was in the upper right corner the amount I had been given, and I simply bought the album with one click.

Denis - Asterix rules. The books are pretty popular in the UK, though with English translations. It's wierd that it's still so funny, 'cause a lot of the jokes are dependent on language. The druid for instance, called 'Getafix' in the UK books, and the Chief, called 'Vitalstatistix'. What are those characters called in the original French versions?

heck, i'd be more than willing to stump up $5, so whoever agreed to do it could make $1 profit on each 'transaction'... be like a tip, or service charge.

I just checked at the iTunes store, and there's only one hitch--the minimum amount that you can spend on a gift card is $10, but the EP only costs $3.96.
