Also, that song has been around for months, you didn't listen to any of the singles? |

Am in a very long and boring meeting at work right now. So far I only now You're so Impatient and Chicken. Am excited to hear Chicken is representative of the album.
No time to set up VPN so I'll sit tight till tonight (I'm so patient) |

Dandys Rule, Ok?
Also.... Ernest Evans is super fun... haven't ever heard a vocal delivery from Charles like that on a Pixies record. Fun fun track.
Ok guys, really give this album a devoted listen on headphones. It's really rewarding. the first listen I had on speakers while making lunch with kids running around and stuff... it's not so much a put it on in the background type album. At least for the first listen. |

I'm still chewing on tracks 1 and 2. Primrose is utterly earnest (as far as I can tell on a handful of listens and without official lyrics). It's a song inviting us into the world of this album. And I'm prepared to go along for the ride. But... You're So Impatient rips me right out with its tongue-in-cheek sass. I far prefer it, too; it's a banger. But how are these tracks supposed to coexist?
Edit: I'm willing to go with "playful juxtaposition." I should probably listen to track 3. |

I only just remembered this now, but months ago I played my copy of the 45 single of You're So Impatient but accidentally had my turntable set at 33 rpm.... the slowed down version sounded even more like the Dandys, especially the low voice. Sounded almost exactly like Courtney Taylor Taylor. My wife even came into the room and asked if I was listening to a new Dandy's song. |

Well it's 00:43 and I've just listened through once. Well well that is one tasty record. After 4 attempts Dalgety has *nailed* Frank's vocal. Loads of reverb, loads of quirk. Loads of 80s, I'm picking up traces of Madness, Adam and the Ants, The Smiths as well the Beatles. There's layers and layers on this. Not a dud on the record. Just several moments of shivers down the spine. Can't wait to explore this over the next weeks. Think Doolittle meets Dog in the Sand.
Off to bed, fascinated to hear what y'all make of this. |

Lyric videos up on YouTube now
I gotta say this is kind of a different band to me now. Definitely more FB and friends as Joey continues to take a smaller role.
Primrose is an odd opener to me, too subdued but pretty. Needed more Joey. Title track is a very nice listen and BF’s “Jane” background yelp adds some needed quirk. |

Disagree. Primrose is absolutely fantastic, and Joey is all over that song and this record.

^ that’s cool. It’s kinda meh to me as the opener but I guess Impatient is supposed to be the energy boost. And Joey may be playing on it but it’s a different more straightforward Joey. But hey, to each his/her own. |

Hear You Mary has good energy and interesting lyrics. Would’ve liked Joey to go a little harder just after the first chorus. Solid track that doesn’t wear out it’s welcome. |

I think all of these songs don't wear out their welcome, which is different from all of the 2.0 records, in my opinion. I do think in Mary, at the end, it felt like a No. 13 Baby moment....I would have liked to have heard some Joey part there, but at the same time, I think it definitely still works well.

Johnny Good Man. Hmm, loaded one for me. Enjoyable song, and I love Joey’s tone on the outro section. Would’ve loved another minute of him. It’s fun, and I could definitely see it as a track on NSE or Abbadubba. Not very Pixies to me but again, it’s fun. |

Will need some more time to see how the album grows as a piece over time. Johnny Good Man grew on me a little on second listen. Also dig the opener.
Oyster Beds is also still a favorite- maybe the one that most harkens back to more old school Pixies (Trompe era) for me. |

Agreed on Oyster Beds. Loved that one immediately when it was released
Impatient sounds better blasting in after Primrose. I like that the songs are on the shorter side. Not as many choruses repeated over and over which I see as a plus.
It’s crazy how the “Jane” in the chorus elevates that song into a more Pixies vibe. Glad they added it.
Still getting through the first listen (had soccer playoffs) but i already enjoy it more than Doggerel. That one didn’t work for me at all. |

Jane just keeps on delivering, it's the song I just keep coming back to.... It's beautiful, haunting, simple, dark, so simple that it just works. I love the added "JANE!" bit in the choruses, I believe that's Dave. At least the louder shouted ones, the lower more subdued ones might be Charles. Anyway, that chorus is just simply incredible, so simple it's a bit confusing that it works so well. |

Almost nothing has grabbed me beyond the singles after the first couple of listens. Maybe a good sign. I don't think many of my favourite Pixies tracks made any sense to my ears right away. |

holy crap Charles sounds like a tuvan throat singer during motoroller's final refrain
it's early days so i hesitate to render verdict on the record. i agree with nate & qua: these are pithy and gripping songs. and without a doubt, we're in the mature phase of Pixies 2.0. i went back and listened to some indie cindy songs and, for me, it's a no-brainer: i'll take chicken over silver snail, hypnotised over blue-eyed hexa. do i wish the mastering was better? yes. would i prefer more screaming (even just one time)? yes. would emma's vocals serve the music better if she started smoking a pack of cigarettes a day? yes. but ultimately it's about songwriting and these songs are just more gripping.
anyway those are my impressions after the first 7 tracks. i've got hypnotised and johnny good man on repeat. i'll check out the album's back half tonight and then let it decant over the weekend. gonna grab a pack of a certain nostalgic beer that i've only had once in the past 8 or 9 years. happy days |

A few thoughts:
As others have said, it's a nice departure from the repetitive songs on Doggerel. Lots of unexpected twists. Some beautiful guitar work from Joey throughout.
Mercy Me is unexpectedly one of my favourites of the 'unheard' songs here. I love BF's vocal (and Emma's).
I'd swap Primrose and You're So Impatient in the tracklisting.
I wonder if I'd enjoy The Vegas Suite more if we hadn't heard it so much in the past year. |

I think You're So Impatient should be somewhere else in the album. Primrose is beautiful, atmospheric, really sets the tone well. That tone can be found in Jane and Chicken as well.... Impatient is quite jarring rammed in the middle of that sequence. |

yeah the track sequencing is a little questionable. i suppose the logic behind Impatient is you want a catchy single for your second song. the tone primrose sets certainly doesn't foreshadow ~rock songs like impatient, hypnotised, or johnny good man. on the other hand, it is a pixies kind of thing to have sudden tonal and stylistic shifts. and this album is faithful to the spirit of pixies i'd say, all things considered. |

I've only listened to it once but so far only Pimrose and Vegas (studio version is way better !) stand out. I don't like Impatient and Oyster, they seem like lazy songwriting. The other ones could very well be growers especially the ones after Oyster Beds. |

I feel the same way, listened earlier but didn't get a sense of anything outstanding or immediately want me to listen again.
I like the singles but, much like most of their recent material, after a few listens they wear out their welcome relatively soon. Will give it further listens of course but I'm not as excited as I thought I would be.

First and second listen: the rock songs don't do it for me, except Oyster Beds which is easily my favorite.
The quiet songs are very nice. Jane has a production that I would have never used on a Pixies record, but it totally works.
Great, great song

Picked up the record and CD on the way home from Fopp. Guess what was playing? Nods were exchanged.
Am now 2.5 listens in but already Motoroller has its finger on my clitoris. Absolute TUNE!! |

I love reading everyone's comments.
This is like Christmas(s) in October.
Thanks again Frank and team.
My thoughts:
What a great album. I can't believe the run he is having again with these last 3 in a row.
Primrose: an absolute dream, love the way it sets the tone for the journey Impatient: lots of fun, maybe forgettable but a solid ditty nontheless. I don't mind the jarring juxtoposition, maybe Frank is doing his Kubrick Jane: What a strange and interesting song. I can't figure it out really but I love it. How weird on a Pixies album Chicken: another fantastic dream. Love this song, still weird to me. Hypnotised: I mean this as a compliment: I feel like Frank wrote this for Britney or Miley Cyrus and got rejected and so just did it himself Johnny: Reminded me of post-country Frank, even Barleycorn Motoroller: Another fun one, maybe forgettable too, but maybe not, definitely a grower Mary: not sure what to think yet Oyster: I love it, but I'm not on board with those who say it could fit on TLM. Nothing can approach TLM. But Oyster is terrific still Mercy Me: not sure what to think yet Ernest Evans: not sure what to think yet Kings of the prairie: really dig this one too, simple and fun and probably deeper than it looks Vegas: even better than i could have hoped for, another dream to close the album
I think Frank's writing is great, I think he's given us lots to dig in to for a long time
I don't mind that a couple of the songs just end, but I'm not sure I would have made that production choice myself
I can't take the Guardian seriously or anyone who can just slap a low card review on this album. People are bitter at Frank for no reason. Grow up.
I would probably give it an 8/10 |
