Crap. I’m wishing I had saved my vote to make a strategic IC vote to save Der Golem...
I had a bad reaction to your public hobby writings. |

Monday morning update
Indie Cindy - 2
Golem - 1
Patriots won the superbowl I hear, which makes me wonder if Frank has any rooting interest being from New England |

I’m getting confused, I think last week I voted twice, once for NSE the again for Christmass, thinking the voting was reset already. Inconsequential siince Christmass is still alive and NSE would have went without my vote.
All that said, I’ll vote for IC this week, more to save Golem than anything, as the war drums are beating for Golem’s head lately!

Listened again to Golem last night. I grew up on that Jewish folklore stuff and Frank’s interpretation is great. You’re Gonna Pay is one of my favorite songs by him. I will fight for this album til the bitter end so I’ll tactically vote IC even though I sorta like it.

Apparently no one wants to commit to a long term relationship with Miss Indie, so sadly she must climb back over the brick wall and live a life of solitude.
Who will be the next to get thrown into the sea?

Sorry Neptune, I was going by the time here. I’ll wait a little longer to make sure all time zones are represented fairly from now on.
Your vote for Indie Cindy is notes.
And curious to hear what album you’re contemplating. |

I vote for B-Sides
There's some fun stuff here, but there are also lots of B-Sides
I do really like Bailey's Walk. And I have a soft spot for UK Surf. On the other hand, I had forgotten Make Believe and I've Been Waiting For You even existed
Side Story: My copy of B-Sides is signed by The Man. Saw him at a record-store appearance (Virgin Megastore in Manhattan, maybe 2001? give or take). I hadn't thought to bring anything for an autograph, and I already owned all his solo stuff, so I grabbed B-Sides so I had something to sign. When I got to the front of the line, told him I'd gotten B-Sides because I already had all his stuff, but felt kinda lame about it. He was playing that night somewhere around town, and I asked if he was taking requests. He made a noncommittal response that nonetheless prompted me to issue my request. Told him I liked Western Star.
No luck though, didn't happen. And we haven't spoken since!
And I guess I must have owned B-Sides already, because now I have two! |

B-sides is awesome!! Into the White, UK Surf, Evil Hearted You... we can’t get rid of it this early. Right now I’ll vote Honeycomb.

Hmm.. I'm going to let fly here, stream of conscious, but then go back after I typed it and clean it up with paragraphs, edits, and probably some forum code because I'm a fancy, fancy man.
I figure with such a sparse crowd as we have on this board these days, any posting is good posting. Even the real BF, Charles himself jumped ship long ago. No one is reading it but us handful of die hards anyway! We are proselytizing alone, might as well take up some prosaic real estate.
Fancy.
Neptune popped in and reminded me that B-Sides is still hanging out. Insidiously under the radar, one might say!
And who can argue with the zen of this statement: "I vote for B-Sides. There's some fun stuff here, but there are also lots of B-Sides."
My thought process is going in this direction...
- The tread is called "Can We Do ALBUM Survivor," and by default, a compilation isn't an album... in my book. I'm sure we could argue that one quite a bit.
- Most everything on there is great, but I have a hard time seeing it as a comprehensive whole, and I don't often listen to it as such. I pull tracks off for mixtapes, playlists, etc, but rarely get real satisfaction from running the whole thing through from Weird to Memphis
- Lots of 'alternate takes' and the like... an instant strike
So I'm sort of leaning towards B-Sides as well, but I have the list open in another window and I'm referencing it as I type. I honestly don't see anything else, in my mind, that deserves going before it. Some of the singles off of it as stand alone tracks are monumental. But as a whole, it's not better than the others.
EXCEPT!... for Christmass. Which has many of the same aspects going for it. Even more so. It's almost exclusively random lesser and/or non-essential takes of previously released songs. Or early, demo versions of eventual releases.
The nice thing here is that both of these are going to get the axe immediate future, so hey, fuck it, dude!
At the risk of pulling an "I'm voting for Nader" that waters down the core vote, I'm going for Christmass.
Mark it zero, dude. Christmass.

I too think B-Sides is a great album in itself. Also Christmass, even though I did previously vote for it. Surely Honeycomb deserves to go before any 1.0? |

If Honeycomb goes before any 1.0 then anything goes before 1.0.
I think we'll always have a fundamental difference of opinion on the Honeycomb era of FB. It resonates hard for me, and always will.

Welcome back to album survivor.
Update is as follows (I think)
Honeycomb - 3 (bedbug, pot, jeepster)
B-sides - 1 (Neptune)
Christmass - 1 (johnnyribcage)
Correct me if I'm wrong.
And it's kind of sad that the fate of the Frank Black canon is being decided by 5 people. Maybe it was meant to be this way? |

How do people feel about FMRM vs Honeycomb? Feels weird to me to see one mentioned a number of times but not the other.
Sad to see Pistolero getting votes. I might have listened to Western Star more than any song on any of these albums. Only just realised this but that probably means I've listened to it more than any other song by anyone.
My vote... Christmass. I wish there was an album built around Demon Girl and some of the other originals from this one but ¯\_(#12484;)_/¯ |

This will sound like common sense, since FMRM is twice as long, but I find there to be more filler on FMRM. I had Honeycomb on this week and was singing along to half of those songs or more (Storage/Dark End/Sing for Joy/Velvet Nightmare/Atom). Also happened to play FMRM side 1 this week, and it did not provoke the same....although I can't help but sing along to Fast Man! And I prefer disc 2 anyway....
I guess I must conclude that I don't like one more than the other, they're sort of equal to me. What I like about both is that I can put them on at dinner time around Mrs. Neptune and kids and it's mellow. Most of the rest of FBs albums end up in louder/screamer territory sooner or later
And before we say goodbye to Honeycomb, I'l say that I think Sing For Joy is the most Frank Blackiest Frank Black song there is. If you asked me for something representative of his (admittedly vast) solo catalog, this is the song I would give you

I think they're both great. I find them to be fairly different though. Of course they naturally go together, but the listening experience for each is significantly different for me. Kind of like Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop. They're a pair with similar aesthetics but otherwise separate.

Update
Honeycomb - 4
Christmass - 2
B-sides - 1
Golem - 1
Pistolero - 1
I think that's it for now. Let me know if I missed your vote.
I like everyone's thoughts on these albums, both in defense of them and as why they should be jettisoned.
As of right now, while I might be bummed to see albums like Oddballs and NSE get voted off, and Honeycomb, none of these are albums I can't live without. But that time is coming, soon.

Very surprised some of those Catholics albums are still there. Golem must be saved. Still haven't listened to Christmass in sequence. I probably should. But still, I probably wouldn't consider it a proper album, more a compilation. |

Christmass is great, but there's definitely some filler on it.
The Golem is great, but I have to be in the mood to listen to it, and often skip around.
I'll join forces with whichever side appears to be winning.
It looks like Head Carrier got its first no vote of the game, and I could easily vote it off as well. |
