Both great albums, of course.

Well, this is just silly at this point. Pretty sure I know what my number one will be - the hill to die on so to speak. But besides that I can’t apply any criteria to what’s left other than to just think through the list and start picking them off in order of how frequently I put them on, least to most. So going by that measure, Surfer Rosa is probably first to go for me.

At this point I have to squint my eyes and look for any imperfections within the gemstones.
Plus, for all of these they've have 25+ years to become part of our fabric (including COP of course), so it really is like putting your dog to sleep. |

As others have implied, the metric that works at this point is which album do I listen to the least, which for me is pretty even between Surfer and Doolittle. Voting Surfer Rosa.
Update:
Surfer Rosa - 4
Teenager of the Year - 3
Trompe Le Monde - 1 |

I'm not at all applying the "which album do I listen to the least" metric I rank them by intrinsic value to my heart, not by usage
voting TOTY

I'm with you on Trompe.
What I don't get is choosing to keep COP over TOTY as you try to save Trompe.
But it's a free forum, and the game's rationality is debatable at this point.
Update:
TOTY - 3
COP - 2
Trompe - 1
At the time of voting, TOTY was leading with 2 votes. To optimize Trompe's chances, I merely voted for the favorite to win this round. Nothing irrational here, Survivor tactics.
Following this, I am assuming since COP is now leading you will change your vote from TOTY to COP? Just curious really.
Of course not, I wanted to save Trompe, not TOTY

Apparently there are those who would say that two different albums can have equal intrinsic value to one's heart. Hence the usage metric. |

Surfer Rosa is my favorite album by any band.
So, I guess I'm voting for TOTY.
And not a single Doolittle vote, as of yet, which is a little disheartening? |

I could’ve easily voted for Doolittle before FB Self Titled. Going with Surfer Rosa this time just because there was already a mob moving in that direction.
Has anyone already lost their #1 favorite album at this point? |

I'll go with Surfer even though TOTY has two or three lesser tracks I don't care for. Both amazing albums but one has to go. |

I think the vote is tied, and ties are bad, so I vote for Surfer Rosa. Not as a "save TOTY" vote, more a symbolic "save solo Frank" vote
Long Live Solo Frank!

Man, if you take the time to tally the votes you'll see how back and forth it was between Surfer and TOTY.
But the last two voters sealed the deal (haha) for Surfer, and she leaves us with a score of 9 to 7. It feels kind of like throwing away the Mona Lisa or something.
Week 26 starts now:
Gone
Paley and Francis Let the People Speak Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day Snake Oil Petit Fours One More Road for the Hit Abbabubba Oddballs NSE Indie Cindy Honeycomb Christmass Cult of Ray B-Sides Head Carrier FMRM Pistolero* SVN Fingers* Devil's Workshop Golem Frank Black and the Catholics Self Titled* Black Letter Days* Show Me Your Tears Dog in the Sand* Bluefinger* Frank Black Self-Titled Come on Pilgrim Surfer Rosa
Still surviving:

I'll vote early this round and just say that of the final four, for me the choice is obvious.
What more can be said about Doolittle? It is clearly one of the greatest albums ever produced in the history of music. We could all write articles about what this album is and what it means to us.
I'm voting against it because I like the other three albums better. It's not that I've got something against Doolittle (little tardy Surfer pun there). I've come to like the other three albums better. I'm sure the me in 1990 did not think such a thing was possible, but here we are.

The results have gone weird hivemind now we're down to a handful - should be voting to save and the least popular should go. |

Well. No easier this week. Like I said last week - kind of silly at this point. I know TOTY and Doolittle are tied for 1st for me. Doolittle being my intro to the Pixies, and TOTY being what it is. I don't know which to fight for but I suspect I won't have to. TOTY probably isn't going to make it to the final 2 anyway.
I love Bossanova and Trompe equally for different reasons. I guess I'll go with Bossanova though due to it having less variation and kind of the whiplash effect of the tracks on the other 3. Which is a trademark of early FBF and something I feel like trying to preserve as we come down to brass tacks. I know Surfer had that too, but my thought last week was to go by frequency of play. I've changed my approach.
Bossanova.

Trompe
I would like to be contrarian and vote Doolittle - but fuck, it's a perfect record and, sorry to be cliche, it may very well have changed my life. I remember listening to it so much in Grade 9 when I first discovered it that I couldn't wait for school to end so that I could listen to it again. |

I hope I can have a pop at making the difficult choice between at least two Pixies 1.0 albums before the end of this, otherwise this is no fun anymore booooooo...
As much as I like TOTY it just can't possible measure up against the first five. These are classic "all killer, no filler" albums, whereas TOTY has filler (I think).
The "it's not a proper solo Frank Black album" is just not a valid argument. |

We all have our opinions, and mine is that TOTY is every bit the unimpeachable masterpiece that the 1.0 albums are. It’s a wildly creative burst of manic pop rock that just knocks my socks off every time I put it on.

Voting TOTY
Can't stand Workman, drums sound like shit, FB was becoming fat, bald and pretentious, soap opera pop style. Playful but vain. No message.
This was the purgatory era, redemption came much later (Honeycomb/Christmass were the first signs that the the creative juices were back)
I'm not saying Pixies are vastly superior to FB's other work. But the remaining Doolittle, Bossanova and Trompe are, fuck the cliché, seminal and genre-defining. TOTY didn't define anything. It was fun, better than Self-titled, but no one would have been interested in it if not for Charles' past in the Pixies
-- "Aristophanes! (gong sounds)" "Fucking up my devotion!"

Damn! That’s an intense take. I’m not following the “no message” thing though. What is Doolittle’s message? What’s the message of Surfer Rosa?

Update:

Bossanova - 1
TOTY - 2 (This is if in fact pot voted for TOTY, I couldn't tell for sure. I also couldn't tell what sdon's feelings were either.)
Re: sdon's last post: I think it's amazing about our man that he can produce an album in 1992 that sdon considers to be the holy grail, and then produce two albums in 1993 and 1994 that sdon considers to be purgatory. Catholicism indeed. |
