This is like being picked for the baseball team, man. Even though the FB tribute wasn't like, a major release or anything, I was very excited and to have made the final cut...track #3 no less. I can only hope that a lot of the submissions were very poor quality, because I don't think my cover's gonna get very far. It was fun to record, but it's pretty much a straight up cover...and being that it's Bailey's Walk...well, can you think of any other songs Bailey's Walk fits with?

Yeah, I'm definitely hoping he gets it in as a b-side at least. Motorway is up there in my top Pixies songs and I was really hoping to hear a well-done cover of it.
To be fair, or maybe clarify, I don't rank the tracks and then assign track numbers. Number 3 (actually, 4 if I recall) doesn't imply it's better than 5 or worse than 1. Just so the people in spot 20 don't think they were first on the chopping block. It's just all about what feels best in that spot and in relation to the surrounding tracks. And I have yet to cut a worthy song because I can't get it to fit.

Good news:
OK, the list is pretty much finalized and will be posted here tomorrow. I'm just going to give a last listen to the b-sides tonight to make sure that I've not overlooked anything. There are some really close a-side b-side competitions that I want to watch the replays on.
Bad news:
The plans I had mentioned earlier as being 'in the works' didn't pan out (as expected), which is why I didn't mention them before. I was in contact with 4AD and a few other labels that specialize in tribute albums, promoting the project but sadly no one was willing to take it on. I also suggested that 4AD may want to include the tracks on their DVD as a bonus feature, but apparently legalities/royalties (to FB even if we waived ours) coupled with the fact that they have the DVD chock-full of Pixies goodness and that it's already in production were all against us. But I tried, folks, I really did.
We'll still be sending copies to Frank and Ken Goes as thanks for allowing us to do this project. I'm sure that Frank will listen to them both some day.
Now, on to some more good news:
The art is coming along nicely, and mastering will probably be completed ahead of schedule, so we're definitely green to go for getting this done before Christmas. Maybe we'll even bump the release date up, who knows. Or I'll mix together a sampler mix with clips from some of the tracks to whet your appetites. Maybe both.

Wow. I'm sure I speak for everyone here when I say thankyou for trying to get a label for it. That's pretty fun stuff. Plus, the two sections of good news over-powers the "bad news". It's not really bad news because we weren't expecting it at all, haha. But hey..the fact that you tried rocks. You've been doing a great job on this project.

So what's the scoop? I'm kind of oblivious to what's going on here. Is someone trying to put together a Pixies or Frank Black tribute, or is it all done already and I'm too late? I just started posting on here today. I'm in a band here in Tucson called The Croutons and we'd love to submit something if possible.

Heh, thanks guys, just doin' what you signed me on to do. I haven't been in touch with Cooking Vinyl, but I shall email them tomorrow, that's a good idea. But I won't hold my breath.
Morgan, sadly all the tracks are submitted and we're in production at the moment, but if you and the Croutons would like to put something together, please do, and we'll add it to the FTP site where everyone can download the tribute album and all the b-sides (your track would be a b-side).
Derek, am I up to 52? Not bad for two days. I plan to edge out what's-her-face by the end of next week. It will be a triumphant day - the release of the tribute album and my besting of her (and maybe ol' Bush himself).

congrats to those who made the final list, bit gutted right now, but will get over it, we plan to have a debut cd ready by feb, mainly demos... so i can get on with concentrating on that now. am i okay to re-upload my final versions of my 2 songs? The Thing has just been cleaned up a bit and I've had a go of mastering I'm Amazed, and put some proper sounding drums on...
Congrats again, looking forward to hearing the b-sides! Erm, and I guess I might give the a-sides a quick listen...

Yeah, sure, upload them away. I'm sorry that there have to be disappointed people, but I know that everyone will check out the b-sides since there are so many good ones. Your songs will be heard, don't worry. Out of those two, I think The Thing was my favourite actually.

Heh, it was hard to record that voice over with the Noiseman messaging me with
"BEEP!" every 1.3 seconds. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. I'm sure there's at least one "uh-oh" in there buried.
The teaser was just a mix, t'warn't nuthin, as EDF would say. There's a lot of songs not in there that are equally good but I just couldn't fit in, you all have a lot to look forward to! Hopefully it gets everyone excited for the final release, maybe garners some non-member/media attention too. It'd be nice to get some publicity like we did from BBC for You Ain't Me, and so forth.
I'm curious if everyone can distinguish all the tracks on there...

Wow, I'm humbled by the fact that I made the final cut...there must have been a lot of bad B-Sides, lol. Sorry, sorry, no offense. Listening to the preview, I'm excited by what's in store. I couldn't recognize half the songs! Blown Away is the one that stood out for me, and even though everyone and his brother's dog has recorded WIMM?, Derek's teaser sounds extra tastey. I can't wait to hear the final version...congrats to my fellow A-Siders, and sorry to the B-Siders. I'll give you Dean's home address if you'd like.

haha, jeeze. All of the A-Siders seem to be pretty caught up in themselves, haha. Yet all of us B-Siders are being nice and kind about it. Shouldn't this be...well...the other way around?
hehe, since the B-Sides don't have to be mastered...you should just release them now...

Oh come on, it doesn't have to be like that. Aside from Jim's unfortunate comment, which I assure everyone is not true, I think that it's an atmosphere of mutual respect.
To put it another way: there are b-sides that I personally like better than certain a-sides. I think I already said something like 4 what I would call honourable mentions. But I don't make these albums just for me. So let's not let it go to our heads that your track is on the a-side, or our hearts that it's on the b-side. A lot of putting this together is getting an album that is cohesive and not disjointed.
I said it many times, and I'll probably say it many more, congratulations to all. The process wasn't easy, and I doubt than any single person will completely agree with all the choices in the end.

i'm all for the b-sides being released early... to wet our appetite for the a-sides...
what will the deal with the artwork be? is there still going to be alternative stuff available, so you can put together your own b-sides compilation using, say, adam west's artwork?

Yeah, we're working on that. I haven't heard back from the other artists as to whether they're developing something, but we'll definitely have alternate art so people can make their own tracklists. I'm going to try to work a little more on the b-sides this time since there are so many good tracks in there.

Wow, I'm honoured to have made the cut (Alec Eiffel)! But I think the real reward - shared by all who participated - was the hours we spent analyzing, adapting, and lovingly re-imagining these amazing songs. I'm sure everyone learned a least a little something about songwriting, arranging, recording and engineering from taking part in this. I know I did!
Thanks Dean and fb.net for engineering such a compelling reason to devote those hours.
