Just a thought: Do you tink maybe 5 years from now we could do another tribute? I'm sure FB will have about 20 new albums in that time, and I think that a lot of people enjoyed creating their track, reading people's progress reports on the forum, and there is a great element of suspense in waiting for the final track list to be posted (It was like Christmas morning for me). Plus, I think a lot of people (like NimrodsSon) might want a second chance, considering that they hadn't been recording for a long time. Also, I think five years is enough time for people to recover from the immense amount of work and everything. I feel guilty to ask becuase we just made our "Hey - A Pixies tribute" and I would bet a lot of people are so tired and overworked that they don't even want to think for a second about another one....but keep in mind that five years is a long time. I'm not even suggesting it, really; I'm just wondering if this is the last time we EVER do anything like this.
I'm scared of the possible replies, I might get a lot of "Oh boo hoo, you gay idiot, you didn't make the list and we're just supposed to work our rectums off just to give you a second chance?" (No, that's not the point, in case you were going to say that). |

I'm sure there will be another tribute down the road. Maybe even less than 5 years? You figure in three years Frank will have out at least 2 more albums, plus Show Me Your Years wasn't covered on this one (except for one or two songs I believe). Plus so many FB songs weren't covered, and new people may have different spins on songs that people did cover. The possibilities definitely lean to a second FB tribute someday.
I still think some kind of Frank Black parody album would be funny. Anyway, I'm sure this will be discusses in the near future.

itd be cool to collaborate on tribute songs over the forum. like get groups of people together and do songs thanks to the glory of broadband internet. probably would take a lot more organizing though

I was thinking the next (and last for a loooong time from me) one might involve people doing songs 'inspired/about' FB, but original material.
That's all I can type for now. I had my first bunch of beer in a long time and it's taken record time to edit this to legibility.

I think the "music-inspired by FB" is a good idea. With each new album Frank puts out, conceivably we could do a fan rendition. The advantage to this: it would be fun; but it could take the "specialness" out of the work already done. Just something to think about. |

I was also thinking about what we could do after those 2 tribute albums and I came up with the following ideas: - A "Free lance" Tribute, ie: covers of other bands we like. - Original songs

sounds good, was thinking that myself. would be interesting to hear peoples 'own' material... i must admit after listening to the fb tribute i checked out quite a few websites of the artists and listened to some of their own mp3's...

problem with a free lance tribute is making it legal. as far as i know we're okay doing frank and pixies as frank knows about them and hasn't tried to sue the site or dean yet... other artists might not be so kind and legally you're supposed to get permission to cover a song... a good idea apart from that. was thinking about it myself too the other night.
a pixies/breeders/frank black tribute might be cool, being allowed to cover any song from any of those bands (or maybe even the martinis), so it would kind of be a 'best of'

I also wanted to echo what Dean said about the a-side/b-side thing. Music and all art is highly subjective. Sure, there are some pieces that most everyone enjoys, but there are other works that inspire passion in a few and indifference or dislike in others. I think the divergent response to Frank's body of work illuminates this point--I love Pistolero, my all-time favorite, but lots of people think it's his career lowpoint.
I think I hear this understanding of art's subjective nature in Frank's tunes (from TOTY: "noboby owns the pleasure of tones/that belong to the guy with no ear")and I believe I can see it in Frank's generally good-humored acceptance of a limited commercial success that does not accord with the huge impact he has had on musician's and close listeners.
Some of my favorite tunes by my favorite artists have been b-sides. |

I had Man of Steel playing on repeat for two days when I discovered that one... also, when I put You Ain't Me in my car (I have an MP3 CD player, so I was able to do this) I burnt it plus 5 b-sides as "bonus tracks". :)
Incidentally, Ice Cream, you won't have to wait 5 years for the next one. :) Probably a few months though, I need to have my feet up for awhile and decompress. Maybe in the spring.
That's all for now. Hope you've all checked out the teaser on the news page.

speaking of this, Dean did you get my "special song" that I uploaded to your FTP?
I wasn't expecting you to mention it right away when I did upload because you were probably very busy with this tribute.

Yup, I'll throw it in with the b-sides, have no worries. Maybe Frank will hear it and use it for the new Pixies album. Oops, I've said too much. :)

So I'm using my computer and all of a sudden, bam, a UPS breaker trips (I recently unplugged my computer and all components for some home rennos and replugged everything back in in a different configuation). I have two UPSes and I hadn't remembered to balance the loads on each.
So my computer's off, leaving me scrambling to figure out what the hell happened and I finally figure out what I posted above and get it back up and I get this message: Hard drive failure imminent with some details on the specifics of the failure. Well, this is where all my tracks for both Kingly Cave and There Goes My Gun are, not to mention all the work that's gone into this project, the FTP material, tonnes of personal files, and so on. About the only thing I have duplicated on a second hard drive is my photo albums.
Anyway, everything's still safe at the moment and I'm backing up like a fool and deleting all over the place to make sure I have everything backed up that I would potentially lose for good, but as a wise man once said, "Who needs that now?"
Thankfully, Mike maintains a lot of free hard drive space to which I am able to slowly back up stuff to.

Well, I've deleted all sorts of "replaceable" stuff and backed up everything having to do with this tribute plus a little bit of personal stuff, so all is well. Just means another couple hundred bucks to spend this Christmas. :(
This time, though, I'm buying two 80 gig drives. Screw 30 + 60.

No complaints, actually, I'm just happy I was able to still access everything long enough to save what's most important. I've been thinking of reformatting and starting over anyway, so now I'm pretty much forced to. I just hope that the hard drive lasts until next week because I certainly don't have time right now to start doing that.

Let this be a reminder to all: backup your harddrives. Yikes...it takes so much work though! I probably should...glad to heard everything is A-OK though.

oooooh...it's getting so close...
You should release all of the B-Sides ahead of time to get some drool going...then you can release the main course. It will let us digest them easier. No one likes constipation, especially when it comes to the pixies. Hehehe
