Allison-Mastered and Allison-Unmastered are uploaded. Let me know if there is anything else I can do.
It is so hard to mix/master/whatever a song right after you record it. My ears are jaded. I hear what I think I hear, not what I really hear.
If that makes any sense?!? |

Blah...this sucks. I mean, I already know how much mine sucks. I definitely would record it again...but I'm horribly sick with my lyme and another secondary infection. I'm not sure which to sacrifice: my track or my health. I feel bad by submitting a bad track and still having enough time to hopefully make it better...but I don't want to endanger myself..Oh well..there's always the hospital down the street (literally...like a 2 minute walk) if I need it..I'll try to redo the whole damn thing...hopefully go for the long version that I attempted before. Wish me luck... |

quote: If you think your song would sound better with another guitar or by your remixing it...then just do it. It's not cool to pressure the poor guy who's organizing this whole thing and has to wade through 70 of our homemade crappy songs by saying "Hey tell me now if I'm going to make the A-list...if so I'll improve it, but if not...I'm too busy."
Consider this post as an apology. A few thoughts:
First of all, I personally don't think it would sound better with a guitar at all. I just, quite simply, understand why other people MIGHT WAnt the guitar.
Second of all, I never intended to pressure Dean. I was VERY VERY reluctant to ask him, and the only reason I did is because Dean told TheCroutonFuton that his track was in the undecided folder. Of course, this was December 1, 2003. For all I know, Dean could have gotten 9,423,462,389,626,946 submission between December 1 and now. I understand and respect that I would be making him do wayyy too much work for him to personally find my submission and listen to it and then tell me everything...I know that it would be wrong and EXTREMELY SELFISH of me for to have him to go out of his way like that just because I requested to. I probably have given many people the impression that I am a disrespectful, arrogant and extremely self-centered moron. So why did I even ask Dean? Because first of all, I know that he posts a lot on the forum, and he listens to a lot of the submissions, so I thought that I'd take advantage of the very very slim chance that Dean would inform me. Also, I never said Dean HAD to tell me, I just thought that if he did tell me that I was in the A-pile or the B-pile, I wouldn't have to send him another submission and make him go through more work. And I really didn't want to add a guitar at all, so that "if you think the song would sound better" comment was not really relevant. Although I did say that I wouldn't mind adding a guitar, I didn't mean that I personally thought it would sound better. I agree that it's not cool to say "tell me now", though. Thanks, Adam, for pointing that out. |

I actually have no problem doing that IceCream, don't worry about it. I don't think you or anyone is taking advantage - this is my job, to help you guys get the best track out there. I actually enjoy critiquing them and watching them grow from rough rock to little diamonds, even if my suggestions are entirely unheeded in the process. That said, I am busy, but never too busy. Ask anyone who knows me. :)
Crouton, don't do it if you don't feel like it, it's supposed to be fun and I certainly don't want you getting more ill as a result or weakening yourself. Plus, there's really not that much time left.
I did get a new copy of Levitate Me today which, though I would like to see more of the song in there than there is currently, is so far above the last one that you'd never believe it. But still a lot of, I don't know how to describe it without giving away anything... still, not bad for a day's work.
I try to listen to them all as they come in, but I'm at work and I spend a lot of time listening to my undecideds, etc as well as reviewing the b-sides and a-sides to find mistakes. If I don't get to it right away, I will. Especially this close to deadline 2. :)

BTW, you did see what I said on the last page about adding guitar, right?
You might also want to go in and adjust some of the timings, they're still a little off in places.

Nimrod's Son, I'm quite positive that your's is much better. I wouldn't worry about it at all.
I tried recording the long version, yet again, with no luck. There's no way the vocals would work at all. I even tried starting it fast and slowing down in the middle for a sortof harmonious section...yet again...doesn't work. The song's auora is just too damn dark for anything like that. Then I tried going fast the whole way through, just lengthening the little "solo" part after the bridge to add a real solo to it. Doesn't work. Haha, blah...the final version I already submitted is already pretty muddied up with guitars...so I can't really add anything to that. Hmm...I'm stumped. Haha, damn hippies. It's their fault.
PS: Any hippies that I may have insulted...I'm sorry. |

heh! the old muddying up with guitars! darn same thing happened to mine! i blame fb&tc with all their flaming guitars, i just wanted to be like frank!
i must have like 6 different guitars on my track, and i *know* it'd have sounded better without so many, so why did i leave them on? god knows! i just couldn't choose which ones to sacrafice! in the end i did lower the volume of one, which is annoying as it was a mad solo kind of thing near the end, not a very good one, but i went mad...

Haha, I have like...umm....5 or 6 guitar's on mine (mainly because it's the only instrument I have, so it had to compensate for bass.) with a corny little midi drum track I made on Fruityloops, along with 2 of my horrible vocals. I tried to pan everything the best I could...but it still sounds pretty lame. Oh well...not much I can do about it now. D'OH! *smacks head* |

Guys, as I mentioned, I'm out of town this weekend so I'll see you all Monday or so. I'll leave my FTP up in case anyone has some last minute stuff to send me, but I'm still clearing out the folder at midnight tonight.

okay, I just re-recorded everything and sent you the final. I'm not quite sure which one is better, the one I've already submitted, or this one. This one has better drums and a much different rhythm guitar part as well as some flanger added to the vocals. Still 2:08, though, so no longer, haha. |

I have 3 guitars on mine. They all are quite different from each other as far as what they're playing and the tone of them. I have an acoustic in stereo (left channel higher than the right), eletric (right), and then an electric panned sorta left. They aren't all going at the same time through the whole song though. Except the acoustic, that is audible the whole song.
For those of you who also contributed to the FB tribute, does your Pixies song have the same style/sound as your FB one did? My Where is My Mind is completely different from my White Noise Maker. I'm more satisfied with Where is My Mind too. It sounds more natural in my opinion (i.e. - no keyboard drums)

One guitar on mine, one upright piano, one keyboard, one upright bass, one vocal track, some whistling at the beginning, and some drums. The weird the about the drums is that I didn't actually have a drum track specifically for my song. I took an old drum track that sounded great, just copied one snare, and mix pasted it with the rest of the instruments throughout the entire song. So the snare was recorded naturally (with a microphone) and mixed artificially. Same with the bass drum and the cymbals. Just thought I'd share some information since that's what everyone else is doing. |

Yeah, have all the songs been turned in?
Gunn emailed me today. Can we make an exception for him? He wants to record a cover song for the tribute, so can we extend the deadline just for him? Also instead of a Pixies song he is doing a Poison cover. I told him Dean will be fine with that.

i unfortunatly am going to miss this tribute. I got one song totally finished, and one close to finished, but my computer is buggy crap, and I cant ever get songs on it right. I had this problem last time, and this time I havent the patience. I got that damn flu the other day(fri), so did my girlfriend (spygirlx) and our daughter, so needless to say Ive been busy. But Ill upload them as a b-side, cause they kick ass. Rock my soul sounds just like the original, which isnt directly what spygirl was going for, but it was fun. Motorway sounds really cool, kinda like what I did for "How you went so far" with kinda that indy-rock kinda thing, but I took more than three hours to record it so the vocals are better (alot better) and everything is better played and mixed. But as soon as I chuck my computer into my pool and get a new one ill get it up on the b-side region. f#ck me |

Well, as long as we get the b-side of it.
As for tribute news, well, I've got it pretty figured as far as final tracks go. There is going to be controversy, I'm resigned to this. So many of the tracks are within hairbreadths of each other quality wise and the photo finish won't even do it. I'm now sitting at about 23 songs that I'd like to see make the final, though I hope to cut that to a nice 18-20 just to keep the quality level up a bit. CD running time should be near the 45 min mark I think.
Anyway, the final list hasn't been decided, but it's close. I have all the final tracks as of Friday night, though a few have been requested to send in their versions with some minor changes for mastering, etc.
Life is hectic and I haven't done anything not related to work/Pixies tribute in so long it's scary.
Anyway, I think there are all sorts of surprises in store for you guys on this one, and I look forward to releasing it to the general FB.Net masses by Christmas.

thanks Dean.
I also appreciate Dave and Bart and all the people who have jobs on this site... you guys rule.
If I don't make the A-side this time, I am sure I shall be one of the most controversial B-sides. For people have seen me post of the years, you know I am a dim wit, however, I think you will be surprised to find that I have music style of my own, and it shows in my cover (with the drummer from pavement's last records) of:
the Bone Machine
Derek: thanks for 3 bibles worth of tabs Merebu: Thanks for the FAQ and you presence Friends: You are cool
If I make the A list I think I shall feel a taste of the way Cobain felt in 1992-1993... I am 27... Bicenntennial
or maybe not
Good the butterscotch bye...

i have a question, ahem... will the track list be announced before the tracks are available or will it be at the same time that the 'album' is released or made available? basically i know some people sent in tracks with very little or no mastering, so i was wondering if we knew our tracks weren't going to be a-sides, so they weren't going to get mastered by tim, we would have chance to master them ourselves and upload them ready to be b-sides?
just been pondering that today really...
quite excited to both see the tracklistings and to hear all the tracks that were submitted, going to be a fantastic day listening to all these new takes on pixies tracks!

Once the tracklist is finalized and arranged/ordered, it will be posted and you can tweak your mix/master if you're a b-side, though this will inevitably cause more controversy as the final b-side will sound better than the one the decision was based on. But I'm OK with that. The better the songs sound in the end, well, the better.

Nope, no idea, sorry. We have to go through a preliminary master to make sure that the chosen songs can fit together and that I haven't missed anything serious as far as quality etc goes.
Probably early next week at a guess, maybe sooner, probably not much later.

Just curious, did any other contributors to this eagerly awaited magnum opus use emagic Logic as their recording program? I have Logic Audio Platinum 5.5--took me couple of weeks just to figure out how to record.
As a side note, I apologize in advance for my "singing."
Also, I'm curious to know what kind of guitars/amps you all use.

Someday I will have an SG. I much prefer to the Les Paul. Never liked the Les Paul. Too heavy and too much sustain for me--not percussive enough. |

Not to sidetrack things, but I'm now in a position to mention that I should have the track list posted by the end of the week. I've just finished up a preliminary one that finds the CD 22 tracks long and 59 minutes.
This may be tweaked by repositioning several tracks or adding/removing (most likely the latter) a few of them.
Maybe I'll start releasing artists/tracks 2-by-2 just to maximize the suspense. :) I think you'll be happy with it, though, there are a lot of cool tracks going on, and many of the b-sides are definitely must-hear's.
