My advice on recording guitar with an SM57...
Put the mic as close to the speaker as possible without touching, and just inside the cone (usually about an inch from the outside edge of the speaker). Aim the mic straight on or slightly angled to the outside so that the mic head is almost parallel to the speaker cone.
If you have a more then one speaker in your cab, find the "sweet speaker" as recomended by someone else, but also posistion your mic so it is near the other speaker(s) (i.e. the mic should be near the center of your cabnet).
Also, it's generally cool to have another SM57 about 3 to 6 feet away from the amp, directly facing the amp to get a nice "room sound". Or for a "natural reverb" you can totally mess around with the posision and direction of that other mic.
Of course, the tracks we submitted are just using room mics, but when ever we recorded "for real" we use the "as close as possible towards the edge of the cone with an SM57" technique and I've always been happiest with that sound.
Here is a pretty good write up on some common guitar micing techniques: http://www.unclespot.com/guitar_miking.html
Here is another decent one: http://emusician.com/ar/emusic_recording_electric_guitar/

So it's due Sunday by 12AM or Monday by 12AM?
I've changed my mind again and decided to do a rendition of Bailey's Walk. I recorded guitar and bass. I'm happy so far. I've always really liked this song...it's very minimal and dark and crazy. Love it. So hopefully the vocals will come out insane and I will be happy.

I might upload mine tonight. See, I mixed my track down to a CD, finalized it, then realized I didn't like the mix and also I got new headphones yesterday so I'm going to mix it down again today and hopefully upload it tonight. Also I might try adding a new vocal track. Ah, it's coming down to the wire. I attempted to upload it 2 nights ago but the FTP said there were too many users logged in. But that worked out fine since I'm remixing it.

yep yep, i got it pretty much when it was released. thing is, i had only heard two albums of his then, and even now i've only had most of his stuff for a few weeks. i'm more excited about the pixies stuff, cause i know the songs a lot better, can play a lot myself, etc. and so i'm more interested in other's interpretations. |

I've recorded my version of Bailey's Walk completely. It's very likely that I'll re-record it tommorow or later or something...if not, I'll just submit what I have. It still needs to be mixed. I thankfully finished the vocals in a single take. It was pretty fun.

Today I added a vocal track that I might use. FYI, when I recorded the vocal track a while ago, I sung:
"You're head will collapse, but there's nothing in it, so you'll ask yourself"
Dean pointed out my subtle lyrical mistake thankfully. The only thing is I really like the vocal track, but it kind of bothers me that I used those words instead of 'if/and.' I'm not sure how much this would have bothered other people, but it started bothering me, and once you hear the mistake you always think about it. So I opted to redo the vox.
Also today I started working up a "surprise" rendition of Where is My Mind that I will submit as a b-side (not before the deadline though).

Alrighty, so another update to my update from a few hours ago. I finished Bailey's Walk and mixed down two different versions...a regular version and an extra schizophrentic version. The mix came out nicely if I may say so...I wish I had my effects processor to add some slapback to the vocals but ahh well. Hopefully all will enjoy it. It's very weird.

Well, the last day today for submissions, officially, though if anyone is really close to completion and needs a bit more time (i.e. a day or two) they should email me. My FTP site has been very busy this weekend, and probably will be so today, but keep trying.
The competition is tight on this one, and the b-side album will likely be much more disputed than for You Ain't Me because I suspect, which is great for you and for me as well. Everyone's done a great job so far!

Hey Dean (if I may call you that, haha)
Just put my track on the B-Side album (in-case you haven't already, haha). I had poor recording equipment and didn't change it that much at all. Although I did put everything I could into it, I'm sure that the other tracks submitted will be much more listenable and original. I really don't mind it being a B-side, especially since I'm a complete newbie at recording...haha.
Thanks, Nathan
If that's okay, of course. I just think it would be more fair that way. I'm not as talented as them...and it automatically counts me out, haha. |

Well, I've started doing a little presort of a/b sides which is in no way finished since I haven't even got all the tracks and is based on only listening to it a few times and not REALLY closely, but if I recall (I'm at work) yours is still in the undecided folder, so...
If you REALLY want it to be a b-side, it's not a problem for me at all (one less to decide about), but otherwise, it might as well go through the process the rest of them do. But I think it's a nice gesture, though from what I remember, it was a pretty decent attempt for a first time recording.

hehe, yeah, it's a habit.
I mean...if you think that it could be mastered to be good enough...then that's your choice. But if not..just let it be a B-side. |

When I was working on my song last night, I did not want there to be drums, but since effort is a factor, I thought I would put drums on there. I came up with this idea that to have the drum track be nothing more than a snare hit at random beats would be original. However, I have come not to like what I did at all. The drums add nothing to the song; they just get in the way of its significance and meaning, and I'm convinced that I've ruined the song. It really gets me down because all the other instruments came out so nicely. The drums are okay for some parts, but there are other parts in the song where the drums make me cringe like I've never cringed before. So Tim, if it's not too much to ask, could you please help and perform the following functions when mastering:
Select the song from 1:15.000 to 1:15.334 and completely delete the selection?
Select from 1:36.000 to 1:36.129 and perform a filter out all frequencies other than those between 500 and 1500 hz? This will make it sound really weird, but more importantly, the horrible off-beat drums won't be noticable.
A little reverb, when appropriate?
If this is too much to ask, I am very very sorry for wasting your valuable time. I asked becuase I feel that I must try to save my song. |

Feel free to make those changes yourself and resubmit it to me. Or take the drum track out completely if you'd like. You can send it Tuesday, I won't be anywhere near done deciding by then.

I've actually toyed with the idea of just giving everyone another week since a lot of people have emailed saying how tight they were for time and how they had to sacrifice this or that on their track to make the deadline. Of course, this isn't fair to the people who got everything done on time and is the reason I haven't done so, but in the end I'm quite busy this week and out of town until Monday anyway, though I have been listening extensively to all of them- Probably about 20-30 hours worth so far.
The other problem is timing the mastering with Tim since he has his own life too and the more I extend it, the less time he has to work if we attempt to make Christmas. As if the Christmas season isn't busy enough.
I've allowed anyone that asked until Wednesday so far, as long as they emailed me but if people and Tim specifically are OK with it, I have no problem waiting a week.

Wow..20-30 hours worth? That's pretty crazy.
This may seem strange..but is there anything I can do to help out at all? I'm home all day, everyday. I'd have plenty of time to do stuff for you. Anything I can do at all? Anything is cool with me. Besides, I'll finally have something to do, haha. |

Alright, since an extension three days too late doesn't serve any one well, let's push it back. The only way this will be cancelled is if Tim is going to have trouble getting them all mastered in time. I'm going to start passing him a-sides anyway, so hopefully the impact of a few late tracks is minimized.
Please try for Friday to have them in and we'll see about Monday when we get there, but there will be NO late acceptances after this (even by half a day).
Thanks and for those who've submitted, if you want to play with your track, email me so I don't have Tim mastering a 'demo-version'. Hope this is fair to everyone.

I'll write you an e-mail Dean, but I just thought I'd make a general comment here as maybe somebody has a clue. Me and the gang did "Gigantic", and I like how it turned out, but it's weird. Every stereo I play this on, it sounds radically different. Basically different instruments seem a lot louder, or clearer on various different stereos. I know next to nothing about about audio, so this is frustrating. I assume this is where the magic of "mastering" comes in, right? I think this thing needs to be EQed and compressed like crazy or something. However, for further reference, isn't there some easy way to tame a recording...like a generic "radio friendly" filter or something? Well at least it's fucking loud. It sounds like Andrew W.K. recording at Sun Studios. Too bad that's not what we were going for. |

Nathan, don't worry about me. I expect to be spending much more time on this at work, but the lucky thing is that I can do a lot of casual listening to warm the tracks up while doing other things (like working, writing this post, etc). At this moment I'm listening to the ending of Derek's final version of Where Is My Mind and now ... Havalina. But I appreciate the offer for help, very kind of you.
Lowpresser, please send me your track credits via email.
Zsolt, that last line cracked me up. Should be interesting...

Mr. Cult, how do you tell an a-side from a b-side? Will there be any voting involved or do you and "Tim" decide?

No, no voting, too complicated. This is basically my job, though I often solicit second opinions from Tim and Mike and a few others on occasion, too, on tracks where I really am torn as to which side of the tracks a particular track lies on.

someone mentioned b-sides and that reminded me... is it going to be the same as the fb tribute, where they're available from the ftp 'as they are' kind of thing, or if the quality of the 'b-sides' is to such a standard would there be a possibility of having a pixies tribute b-sides album? just curious really... we could use the runner up adam west's cover art for it...
