RE: Recording electric guitar. For my current version, I used the Line 6 Pod Pro. This gizmo is great. I think it can nail a Dual Rectifier and Marshal JCM 800/900 sound, although the included factory presets don't do it.
I am going to submit my most presentable version of Planet of Sound, but I plan on re-recording this week, not with the POD, but my Mesa Rect-O-Verb using the classic setup of a Shure SM57 pointed directly at the speaker cone. I'm doing this not for reasons of tone, but because I want some howling feedback in the tune. |

There must be a way to get a decent sound comparable to what's coming from the amp without buying other equipment than a mic and a solid mixing board (using a Mackie)? We've fluked out and done it once where it was decent, but it either seems to high and distorted or too low and muffled.

haha, "too many users to connect. please try again later."
I'm just going to send a demo tonight, I think, unless I get the bass recorded tonight, then I'll send the final. |

As long as the final is not also encoded at 160 instead of 192, I'll be happy. :)

Sorry about all the uploads Dean. Iresubmitted my stuff at 192. Originally they were 256 (I guess that's overkill). Delete what you don't need.
Oh, and with recording guitars with a 57 - try this (I'm assuming you don't have 3 assistants and a seperate monitoring room like the rest of us ;-) )
Put on your best head phones and listen while you position you mic. If you have two people, have one play while you squeeze the phone on your ears to block out any direct sound. Even half an inch can make a huge difference. Turn left right, up down, move forward and back. If your amp has two speakers, they have different sounds...look for the sweet speaker. If you're recording a main guitar, go for the brightest, most detailed sound. If supplemental or backup guitars, turn mic on its axis a bit for a different set of frequencies. Ching the mic position between guitars or parts will make them stand out more in the mix. If you leave the mic in the same place for every guitar, you'll have to use more EQ.

oh well, good luck with there goes my gun anyway... as for recording guitars, i go with the gil or was it steve approach, can't remember but it was in nme. basically envolves donning headphones (that are listening to the mic), turning your amp up to the max and putting the mic wherever you can hear the most noise coming from the amp. seems to work pretty good. but yeah, i see someone else has posted something very similar... so that's a good place to start!
oh and to confirm... started a part-time job this week and have an assignment to hand in, so we're going to do our bass-line and backing vocals very last minute. when is the actual deadline? i mean saturday is looking like when we'll have our best chance of recording, but to have sunday too would take the pressure off a bit? is there an actual time they have to be in by? sorry if this is mentioned elsewhere...

Jefrey - 256 is OK, we can downsample it when we master without losing anything. But, of course, it can't be upsampled quite so easily.
Monsieur Fouton - Yeah, it was good from what I remember. I haven't received any stinkers yet, so...
BBB2 - I can do you one better, you have until midnight on Monday CST to submit your track. If it takes longer than that, you can still submit, but as a b-side.
Thanks for the recording tips, we've done things like adjusting the mic position until it sounded good, but it sounded far different in the recording. Didn't try micing the other speaker, though... we'll obviously have to play with the positioning a bit more patiently.

There's two ways to approach guitar recording. One is to get a great sound out of the amp and then try to capture it perfectly with the microphone. The other is to use mic position to tailor the sound. Since you're probably using a 57, I'd go with plan B. What I like to do is have the guitarist play while I point one ear towards the amp and move my head around until I find the sweet spot. Then I put the mic there. You should place the mic at an angle towards the speaker so the sound isn't hitting the capsule dead on. Don't put it too close either. You usually want to back it up a few inches. Another good thing to do is to have the guitarist in the control room so he/she can listen through the speakers as you move the mic and yell when you get a good sound. Other than that, simple things like having new strings make a big difference.

The Pixies WERS Radio Show is really awesome. I think it's from January 1987.
Ok, so, looks like I'll be uploading my cover tomorrow. I didn't have time to do it today. I still have to mix it down to a CD-R then encode it as an MP3.

Dean, I wouldn't worry too much about mic positioning myself. Just set the 57 two or three inches back from the screen, approx halfway between the fringe and center of the speaker cone and you're pretty much gonna get what's coming out of the guitar amp. Maybe this method isn't so certain with a dual-speaker cab; in that case, I'd try to get a second mic on the job. Just make sure the amp sounds exactly how you want it to and remember to crank it up for the best amp-to-ambience ratio. If the recorded result clashes with or is buried by other instruments, it's probably a sign that you need to get your mixing ears out and start mixing. Good luck! |

Thanks for all the recording advice again. Mike just got his drums tuned and fixed and they'll hopefully be ready tonight, which means we can lay down that all important initial drum track and start recording instead of writing/practicing.
As for the Pixies show, I'll put it on my FTP soon, I just need to have some free time at home...

Good news, sort of, is that Mike's drums have been repaired in record time and we'll be recording the drum and guitar tracks tonight with real drums as opposed to keyboard magic. It's going to be a loooooooonngggg weekend.
As for the song itself, we've definitely Asteridized the track and it is anything but straight-up. I need everyone crossing fingers, toes, and all other crossable appendages for us to have some success with the recording process.
Basically, the output of the keyboard will go to Mike via headphones so he has something to drum to, and I play my part without hearing it. Then, once we have the drum track recorded in stereo, we'll record the bass and then guitar, which fills up our four track. Then, those get dumped to computer, and on Sat/Sun I put the keys back in direct to the computer as well as the vocals. That's the plan.
Now, there are still a few of you that I've not heard from yet. Hopefully I do soon, in MP3 format...

Well, it's not complete, but close, however I've been in touch with a few people and I expect to approximately pull in another 20 or so by Monday. Last time I had even less of the final tracks in at this time, some like to save it to the end, some like to work to the end, and some (me) have to work to the end. I know of ~7 tracks on there that are actually done and just waiting to be sent in, plus a lot that are very close.

I totally scraped my first try which will be submitted late as a B-Side. I've taken "Holiday song" in a totally new direction. So far it sounds like the love child of Love and Rockets and Suzanne Vega if you can picture it. Appropriate influences time wise for when the Pixies existed. They toured with Love and Rockets I believe.

Today we're mixing the demo of my band, when that's done (probably not before 10 pm) I'm finishing "I Bleed", even 'if it takes all night'.

By 'pull in', do you mean 'upload'? I thought they were due on Sunday. Which brings up another point: Is it due at a certain time of day on 11/30/03? |

It's due Monday by midnight. Not that I'm going to shut off my FTP and absolutely refuse something that comes in at 12:30 or something, but that is the closing time.
And yeah, pull-in = receive = download. Or you guys uploading to me. However you want to look at it.

Mr. Grieves will be uploaded Sunday night. He's been stuck in the can for a couple weeks, waiting for a proper final mixdown. Getting together tomorrow afternoon to do that. This time, we only used the computer to burn copies and convert to mp3.

i'm amazed and the thing uploaded. really like our version of the thing, and i'm amazed is cool, could do with some mastering though...
whatever the result, been great fun and has improved all my musical skills (especially recording and mixing, oh and my vocals!) a great deal, now feel confident enough to embark on my own stuff... so for that thanks!
good luck to everyone else too... may the best tracks win.
