So I'm beginning to update the track list with the songs I've received thus far. Let me know if you're missing or if what I have from you at the moment is merely a demo.

Thanks to the kind words of my fellow forum friends, I laid down the guitar tracks for Palace of the Brine the other day. I also put down the bass, but I'll probably re-record that. I will very likely re-record the entire song after take 1 is done...Hopefully I'll finish in time!

Monkey Gone to Heaven is completly done. Yeah, we are done and done. I think it sounds great. We went for a sound very close to the original. Since we thought the pixies did a great job recording it we didn't want to mess with it. Plus our music is very similar to the pixies sound so we are very familar with it. I hope everyone enjoys it. you guys can check out our web site to hear some of our original songs. It was really fun recording Monkey gone to heaven. We have started playing Monkey at our show and are getting a very good response from the crowd. You can really tell the fans that like the pixies because they get really excited when we play the intro. It's really cool playing that song in front of a crowd. It is a fairly simple song but it is so great.

I put two up some how. The first time it only sent 64kb of the file, so I uploaded it again minus spaces between the hyphen. Delete the "Misleadtheworld - Here..." the one you want is "Misleadtheworld-Here C....".

on Subbacultcha: I changed everything, well, that is: a lot. As usual the best ideas come near the end.. previous version was ok, but the final one is better in my opinion. I'll let it rest for a day or so, my ears are tired, and then i'll up it. It's quite powerfull, as it should be, with a nice groove. Can't nearly wait to hear the other songs! |

FYI - if any of you are looking for a cheap way to get better sounds, check out the ART MP tube mic pre. I just bought the two channel version called the TPS for $130 shipping included on Ebay. It can be a little touchy, but the sound is great. I think the one channel MP pre can be gotten for around $60 on Ebay. Be sure to get the one with the VU meter. Great bang for the buck!

Hey guys, things are coming along great. I have demos for about 15 songs and finals of about 8.
I'm starting to get a taste of how it is for you guys, with some of these demos. So, in the interest of being helpful, I thought I'd talk about what I've got so far and how even I'm being teased. For example, "NamJuneRobot" sent me a 45 second demo clip from All Over The World and it's sounding awesome (you need to bring your vocals up a bit) but I need to hear the rest!!! What I do have so far is starting to scare me a little bit - this is going to be a much more difficult process for choosing than the FB tribute, which I already found challenging. Simon, I forgot that I'm Amazed was still demo when I green'ed it, but I'm looking forward to your final. This demo's got a LOT of potential. Grozio's Subbacultcha demo and the latest version he sent me are both awesome and are almost two distinct songs. I'm not even sure which I prefer of the two! A lot of you have really gone for it with the vocals this time, too, which is nice to see. Rock Music comes to mind, and of course LBF's cover of Bone Machine. Here Comes Your Man is done and sounds pretty authentic instrumentation wise; on the other hand, Debaser is probably going to pleasantly surprise a lot of you. Blown Away is sounding pretty amazing, too, a mix of dead-on straight up and a little bit of playing around within that context. And Derek's WIMM I haven't heard from in awhile, but I think that the naysayers who are worried about "another WIMM cover" will see that this one is quite a bit tastier than any "real band's" cover.
So, that's where we're at right now. The art team is working into the wee hours of the night this weekend so that we can vote on official artwork mid-next week. Tim, I hope you're ready for another round of mastering. We're getting close and this is getting exciting, guys & gals! I'm really looking forward to hearing what the rest of you are putting together. Blue Cadet, I'm still waiting for you to put Monkey Gone To Heaven on my server.
Anyway, good work so far, let's keep it up and make sure that the critics are "Blown Away". Hey?

I'm gonna go ahead and turn in Dead, but I'm not happy with it at all. I think the main problem is that the drums completely suck, but I don't have the time at all to rerecord them. Another issue I think is the recording quality since it's really the first complete recording I've ever made and I barely know what I'm doing

Because you all seem to care so much, here's an update on my keyboard: IT HAS BEEN FIXED. I will try to finish my track tomorrow so I can give it to Mr. Black when he's in Brussels (Monday).

Dean- Just to let you know...Rock Music is a final version, so far. I might try and do an alternate mix or two w/ my drummer, just to see if we can get a better overall sound. But so far, you can consider it a final version.

Well...I just finished hangwire..I tossed the slower version...I couldn't get the vocals to work with it. This one isn't that much different...and as far as I can tell...sucks big monkey balls...but that's my opinion...I guess we'll see. I'll upload it sometime tonight..
Please note that this is like my 4th time even using my 4 track...and my first time using midi drum loops.. :/ oh well...haha I should stop using excuses for why it sucks. I do =D

I've got a few more in, and this is clearly going to be a challenge...
Mr. Disanto, I need Silver sent again at 192 kbps. Sounds good, though. How come you start to speed up the beat and then bring it back down at the start of the next verse, though?
I've also got Alec Eiffel, very interesting take, like you couldn't decide which way to go with the song so you've got 'em both in. :) Allison is also in the same situation, but as more of an intro/song/outro division. Anyway, I don't want to reveal to much about these songs, just letting you guys know I'm getting them in and listening and we're doing well so far. I've also got a version of Dead and a few updates to what I've had previously.
The time I've spent on the behind-the-scenes stuff has sucked a LOT of much needed time away from my own track, so I will be VERY busy this week doing that as well as, first and foremost, the job of XP on this. We've got the art vote coming up, I've been working with a lot of the bands on tuning their tracks, trying to see where we are as far as contributors go, and help out with people having trouble getting to a final version. I'm saying this because I will still continue doing all these things, but now that we're moving into serious recording, I may not be as prompt in response. But don't worry if you don't hear from me right away, I WILL get back to you.
You've all put in your hours, now it's time for me to. :)

hey i sent you an email a few days ago about that and i guess you didnt get it. See i came home from college for thanksgiving and i forgot that i wouldnt be back before dec 1st. all my files for silver are on the computer at school, so the only copy i was able to get to you in time was the 160 i had uploaded. i thought maybe i could just send you that while you decide if you like it and then when i get back to school send you the 256 one if you wanna use it. thanks

El Barto - I am on the list for Palace of the Brine, I've been working hard on it, and would hope it doesn't get tossed aside becasue the list moderator has decided to do it as an afterthought.
Of course, if yours is better, I guess I can't complain.
I just thought the whole point of having claimed a song was to make sure we don't pour time, sweat and stress into something that's not going to be used.

Yeah, don't worry about it Jefrey, you are correct. But Jim's involvement, or mine, or anyone's, has no bearing on the decision, I assure you.
It's interesting that you bring this up, as he was one of the people who argued against me allowing people to change tracks early on, but as long as there's only one person, there's no reason to not allow two. But I take all this into account. Email me if you want further clarifications. If there are two of you already doing it, then Jim's going to be out of luck switching tracks.
Mike & I are considering a different track, but we're constrained to what's left since it WOULD be unfair for me to go up against any of you, to us and to you, since I couldn't in good conscience choose our track even if it was better. Unless it was WAY better. But then I'd feel bad.
I haven't heard from the guy doing Gouge Away yet, so I'm also considering that one, but...
Anyway, Jefrey, don't worry, you won't get screwed over. I'm a pretty fair guy.

Awesome - I got email from Jim, too. Thanks for explaining the sit.
As I mentioned to him - I had shoulder surgery in Sept. And had to wait and rehab for a month and a half to even being recording, which was still painful.
Definitely not looking for sympathy, but it would have sucked to go through all that and not even have a chance to make the cut!

Dean, I might upload my final version tomorrow night. I mostly have to bounce a couple tracks and then mix the song down. I might upload two different versions to see what you think. The only difference will be in the first 5 seconds (lil intro) of the song. Who knows, I might end up deciding for myself which I like better.
If I don't upload it tomorrow, then I should be able to wednesday afternoon.

'Palace Of The Brine' is in the can and uploaded. Well, I think it's in the can.
The version I submitted is already "mastered" - if you are doing overall mastering, would it be better to submit just a mix? Remastering something that is mastered can often make it sounds worse...
Just wondering if anyone else does their own mastering.

Im gonna upload motorway to roswell within a few days, I think spygirl should be uploading rock-a-my-soul soon, I know its finished, and sounds just like the original(which isnt how I would have done it) but it does sound really good. Lots of energy, great vocals. Motorway sounds really good, allthough until I took it on, I never realized how unconventional a song it is. It was hard to play the whole drum track through alone. Really hard. |

Yeah, I know. :( We were really hoping to be the ones to get a full and proper studio version of the song to you guys, but we just weren't really getting into it when we tried to record it. And we did try. On the plus side, for contributors, I will have the Pixies WERS Radio Show in which there is probably the best recording of Boom Chicka Boom that I've found on my FTP site starting tomorrow night. So you can log in and download that. We'll put it on the public FB.Net FTP sometime next month, too, so everyone can get it.
On the plus side, rather than giving up as not being able to get something done that we were genuinely happy with, we've switched tracks as of last night. We started playing around with There Goes My Gun and put together a pretty cool sounding little demo, so we will be recording/mixing/whatever like crazy this week to get it done.
We also were struck with disaster as while we were jamming on a few of our own tunes I somehow managed to drive the kick through the head and bust it nice. We'll be using the keyboard for drums, but we'll do our best to coolify it. Saves micing up the kit and everything again, though...
On that note, I should ask for those recording electric guitar, how are you positioning the mic? Centre of the cone, straight on. Close to the edge and angled? One mic? Two? EQing? We're using an SM-57 and really haven't got a tone we're happy with.
Finally, my server is down all day today and possibly all day tomorrow as the establishment is being rennovated. It will be up in the evenings, though.

Derek, sounds good. I'll have my server up tonight.
Jeff, see your email. Basically, mastering on your own is fine, but we may be making some adjustments to add to the cohesiveness. Different songs will need different amounts of mastering, so presumably a mastered track will require less.
Neil, great, I've been waiting to see that track pop up. Where has Ms. X been? I've not seen her around, but I'm glad to hear that we'll be getting Rocka My Soul.
